Are Esoteric Programming Languages Useful for Learning to Code?

Esoteric languages can make programming concepts memorable, but they are best used as small, optional experiments after basic coding foundations—not as a proven first step.

Yes, but mostly as a focused experiment after you understand basic programming ideas. Esoteric programming languages (esolangs) can make computation memorable by imposing unusual rules, stripping syntax to a minimum, or turning code into a puzzle or artwork. They are generally poor tools for building ordinary software, and there is no established evidence that learning one first reliably improves proficiency in Python or another mainstream language.

The most useful question is not whether an esolang is “good” in the abstract, but what you want to learn from it. A carefully chosen, small exercise can illuminate state, control flow, language design, or representation. A beginner-oriented environment remains the safer choice for a first sustained coding experience because it is designed to manage complexity, provide feedback, and support projects.

What is an esoteric programming language?

An esoteric programming language is designed around an unusual goal or constraint rather than around convenient production software development. The constraint might be an extremely small instruction set, a deliberately awkward syntax, a two-dimensional program layout, extreme difficulty, or source code that resembles a play or poem. “Esoteric” describes the language’s design purpose; it does not mean that every program written in it is mysterious or that every language has the same educational value.

Many esolangs began as experiments in language design, entertainment, artistic expression, proof of concept, or programming challenge. That makes them different from languages and environments whose primary purpose is helping novices build useful projects. An esolang may be technically capable of expressing general computation while still being impractical for routine applications.

What does “useful for learning to code” mean?

Useful for writing practical software

On this measure, most esolangs perform poorly by design. They tend to have sparse libraries, unfamiliar notation, limited debugging support, and few reusable examples. Those limitations are not defects if the goal is to explore a language idea, but they create friction when the goal is to build a website, automate a task, or learn an industry workflow.

Useful for understanding computation

An esolang can be valuable when its odd rules isolate a concept. A tiny instruction set lets you ask how much machinery is needed to express computation. A spatial layout makes execution paths visible. A deliberately difficult language turns constraints, obfuscation, and usability into subjects for discussion.

Useful for thinking about languages

Learning an unusual notation forces you to notice assumptions that conventional syntax hides. What counts as a variable? How is a branch represented? Where does a program’s state live? Which features are essential, and which are conveniences added for human readers? These questions support programming-language awareness and can lead to experiments in program construction or language design.

Useful for sustaining curiosity

A puzzle or artistic challenge can give a learner a reason to keep exploring. That motivational benefit is personal rather than guaranteed: a learner who enjoys deciphering rules may become more engaged, while another learner may experience only confusion. Treat an esolang as an optional project whose difficulty can be stopped or reduced, not as a test of whether someone belongs in programming.

What different esolangs can teach

There is no universally best starter esolang. Choose one according to the idea you want to examine and the amount of notation a learner can comfortably handle.

Language Distinctive design Concepts it can expose Practical caution
Brainfuck Eight-character instruction set; Turing-complete How a very small set of operations can describe computation; state, memory and loops Minimal notation provides little guidance, so tracing a program can dominate the lesson
INTERCAL Deliberate departures from conventional language design Hidden assumptions about syntax, usability and what a language is expected to do Its contrarian rules are better for discussing design choices than for ordinary projects
Befunge Two-dimensional control flow Execution paths, movement through a program and program tracing The spatial model adds a second layer of unfamiliarity for beginners
Malbolge Designed to be exceptionally difficult Constraints, obfuscation and the boundary between challenge and usability Its difficulty makes it unsuitable as a first language or first lesson
Shakespeare Play-like source text Syntax, representation, readability and artistic goals in language design The theatrical form can distract from basic control-flow ideas if the exercise is too large

Match the language to the question

If the question is “Can computation be expressed with almost no vocabulary?”, Brainfuck gives a direct demonstration. If the question is “How does layout affect execution?”, Befunge is a more relevant case. If the question is “Why do language designers care about readability and usability?”, INTERCAL or Malbolge can serve as deliberately extreme examples. Shakespeare is a natural choice when representation and artistic form are the subject. Keep the program small enough that the unusual notation does not hide the underlying concept.

Is Brainfuck a good first programming language?

Usually, no. Brainfuck can be a good second-language experiment once a learner already understands variables or memory, repetition, input and output, and the idea that an interpreter executes instructions. As a first sustained experience, its compact notation removes the cues that help a novice connect a line of code with an intention. A learner can spend the entire session decoding symbols without developing a durable model of problem decomposition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Brainfuck can teach

  • Instruction semantics: each of the eight characters has a narrowly defined operation, so changing one symbol can change the result.
  • State and memory: the learner must track how operations alter a data area over time.
  • Loops: repetition becomes a visible mechanism rather than a convenient keyword whose purpose is taken for granted.
  • Computational sufficiency: a tiny language can still express general computation, illustrating that a language’s size and its expressive power are different properties.

How to make a Brainfuck exercise productive

Start with a single trace on paper or in a visualizer. Ask the learner to predict the state after each instruction, then compare that prediction with the interpreter’s output. Translate the same task into plain-language steps or pseudocode immediately afterward. The translation is the educational bridge: without it, the activity can remain symbol manipulation rather than programming practice.

Should you learn an esolang before Python?

There is no demonstrated learning advantage to putting an esolang first. A sensible sequence is to learn basic programming ideas in an environment that reduces unnecessary complexity, use a mainstream language for small projects, and then try an esolang when you have a specific question or curiosity. This order lets you recognize what the esolang is changing instead of asking you to discover programming and an unfamiliar notation simultaneously.

Starting with an esolang can still be reasonable for a learner who explicitly wants a puzzle and accepts that it is not a direct route to practical software. Set a narrow goal, such as tracing one loop or comparing two representations of the same algorithm. Do not treat completion of a difficult esolang challenge as a prerequisite for moving to Python, JavaScript or another conventional language.

How to use an esolang as a learning activity

  1. Define one learning outcome. Choose a question such as “How does a loop change state?” or “How does two-dimensional control flow affect tracing?” Avoid the vague goal of becoming good at the language.
  2. Establish the prerequisite idea in a familiar form. Demonstrate the same concept with pseudocode, a visual block environment or a mainstream language before introducing the unusual notation.
  3. Select the smallest suitable example. Use a program that performs one observable task. Large puzzles increase the chance that notation, not the target concept, becomes the lesson.
  4. Trace before running. Record the program counter, relevant state and expected output. Then run the program and identify the first point where the prediction differs.
  5. Translate the result. Rewrite the algorithm in plain language or conventional pseudocode. Name the equivalent variables, conditions, loops or data movements.
  6. Reflect on the design. Ask which rule made the program shorter, harder, clearer or more obscure. This turns an amusing puzzle into a language-design discussion.
  7. Stop when the constraint has done its job. If the learner is spending time memorizing notation without gaining insight, return to the familiar environment or choose a different esolang.

How esolangs compare with beginner-oriented environments

The design goals are different. The 2023 Dagstuhl report on educational programming languages and systems describes beginner-oriented design in terms of reducing complexity and frustration while staging concepts and feedback for learners. MIT’s Scratch team states: “When people learn to code in Scratch, they learn important strategies for solving problems, designing projects, and communicating ideas.” Those goals explain why a block-based or otherwise guided environment is normally a better first setting than an esolang.

Learning dimension Esolang activity Beginner-oriented environment
Primary purpose Explore an unusual constraint, representation or challenge Build programming understanding through staged projects and feedback
Notation load Often high because ordinary cues are removed or replaced Intentionally managed so the learner can focus on problem solving
Feedback May be limited to an interpreter and the learner’s own tracing Designed to make results, errors or next steps easier to interpret
Typical project scope Small demonstrations, puzzles or artistic experiments Projects that practice planning, construction and communication
Best connection to mainstream coding Requires explicit translation and discussion Usually built into the progression of examples and activities

This comparison is about design intent, not a claim that every esolang tool or every beginner platform behaves identically. An excellent teacher can make an esolang lesson accessible, while a poorly designed beginner activity can still frustrate a learner.

What evidence exists about learning benefits?

A 2019 meta-analysis by Ronny Scherer, Fazilat Siddiq and Bárbara Sánchez Viveros combined 105 studies and 539 effect sizes on cognitive transfer from learning computer programming. It reported an overall transfer effect of g = 0.49, with a 95% confidence interval of [0.37, 0.61]. The analysis also found larger effects in studies with untreated control groups than in studies with treated control groups.

Those figures describe programming education broadly. They do not isolate Brainfuck, Befunge or any other esolang, and they cannot establish that an esolang causes the reported effect. A measured result for programming instruction in general should not be presented as evidence for a particular unusual language.

Singer and Draper’s 2025 essay argues that esolangs deserve serious attention and discusses possible benefits for programming-language awareness, program comprehension, construction and language design. That is an analysis of potential value, not a controlled demonstration of improved beginner performance. The available material does not provide a controlled comparison showing that esolangs are either effective or ineffective as first languages.

How to decide whether an esolang is right for you

Choose one when you have a precise concept in mind

An esolang is a good candidate when its defining rule makes a target idea unusually visible. Write down the idea first, then select the language whose constraint serves it. If you cannot state what the learner should understand afterward, the activity is probably novelty without a lesson.

Check the support around the language

Look for a working interpreter, a short reference, examples that show expected output and a way to inspect execution. If those supports are absent, the learner will have to solve tooling problems before reaching the conceptual goal. That may be appropriate for an advanced language-design project, but it is a poor bargain for a first experiment.

Prefer reversible commitments

Use a short session and a tiny program. A learner should be able to return to a familiar language without having lost confidence or a large amount of time. Esolangs work best as a side path, not as a gate that delays ordinary programming.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Confusing difficulty with depth: a harder puzzle is not automatically a better lesson. Tie every complication to a stated concept.
  • Letting notation eclipse algorithms: have the learner describe the algorithm in plain language before and after the esolang version.
  • Using an interpreter as a black box: require a prediction and a trace before execution, then investigate discrepancies.
  • Overclaiming transfer: distinguish an engaging exercise or a new perspective from evidence of improved general coding ability.
  • Turning the activity into a contest: celebrate explanations and design observations, not only the shortest or most obscure solution.
  • Ignoring frustration: switch languages or return to a beginner environment when the constraint stops producing insight.

A practical four-session progression

Session 1: establish a baseline

Use a beginner-oriented environment or a mainstream language to build a tiny project containing input, a decision and repetition. Ask the learner to explain the state changes and the algorithm in ordinary language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Session 2: introduce one esolang

Pick the language whose defining feature matches a single question. Demonstrate only the notation needed for the smallest example, and have the learner predict its behavior before running it.

Session 3: compare representations

Rewrite the same task in pseudocode and in the familiar language from the first session. Discuss what the esolang makes explicit and what it hides. This is where observations about syntax, memory, control flow or artistic representation become transferable understanding.

Session 4: return to a useful project

Build or modify a small conventional-language project. The purpose is not to prove that the esolang improved performance, but to see whether the learner can apply the clarified concept in a setting with normal tools and feedback.

Bottom line

Esoteric programming languages are useful for targeted exploration, memorable demonstrations and reflection on how programming languages shape thought. They are not established shortcuts to coding proficiency and are usually a poor first language. Learn basic ideas in a supportive environment, use a mainstream language for practical projects, and bring in an esolang when its unusual constraint answers a question you genuinely want to investigate.
