Yes—if you need something your phone does not do well, such as optical reach, interchangeable lenses, or more direct control over how a photo is made. If you mainly take casual family, travel, and social photos, a phone is often the more practical choice: it is already with you, handles processing automatically, and makes sharing quick.
The useful question is not whether cameras are obsolete, but whether a separate camera and its full system cost solve a real problem for you.

What the 2026 camera market says—and what it does not
Dedicated cameras remain an active market. The Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) recorded 9,438,876 digital-camera shipments worldwide in 2025. Its February 2026 outlook projected 9,590,000 shipments for 2026; that is a forecast, not a completed-year result. CIPA’s figures cover its member companies, not every camera brand, and they are shipment totals rather than a survey of what individual buyers prefer. CIPA’s 2026 outlook provides the underlying figures.

The built-in-lens total rose from 1,880,414 in 2024. These numbers show that both interchangeable-lens and fixed-lens cameras have buyers; they do not prove that a camera is worthwhile for every person. CIPA itself describes the market as reflecting users choosing products for intended use and desired features.

When is a camera better than a phone?
A dedicated camera makes the strongest case when your subject or shooting conditions call for capabilities that are awkward or limited on your phone.
- Reach: A camera system can use a genuine telephoto lens for distant wildlife, sports, or stage performances, rather than relying on a phone’s digital enlargement.
- Specific optics: Interchangeable lenses let you choose macro, fast-prime, ultra-wide, or telephoto optics for particular subjects.
- Control: If you want to make deliberate exposure choices or use optical depth-of-field effects, a camera can offer a more direct way to shape the image.
- Room to build a system: You can add compatible lenses for new uses over time, provided the mount and overall system remain suitable.
These are reasons to consider a camera, not guarantees that every photograph will look better. Results depend on the subject, light, lens, settings, and the photographer’s choices.

When should you keep using your phone?
For casual family, travel, and social photography, the phone often wins on convenience. It is close at hand, combines capture with automated processing, and usually makes sharing straightforward. A dedicated camera adds another device to carry, charge, store files from, and potentially transfer images off of.

Choose the type of camera around the job
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep using a smartphone | Convenient everyday photos, quick processing, and sharing | Less flexibility for genuine optical reach and specialized lens choices |
| Fixed-lens camera | A dedicated camera experience without choosing separate lenses | The built-in lens sets the camera’s optical range and flexibility |
| Interchangeable-lens camera | Buyers who need to select optics for different subjects or want to expand a system | Body, lens, and compatible-system costs add up; carrying and file handling take extra effort |
Within the camera market, portability and lens flexibility are distinct priorities. A fixed-lens camera can suit someone who wants dedicated gear without managing separate lenses. An interchangeable-lens body makes more sense when a particular lens choice matters. Do not default to a larger or more expensive format simply because it sounds more advanced; match the system to the job.
What to check before spending money
- Name the recurring problem. Write down what your phone fails to capture well—such as distant subjects, close-up detail, or a type of control you want. If you cannot name one, wait before buying.
- Check the whole workflow. Consider whether you will carry the camera, keep its battery charged, manage its storage, and transfer or edit files. The camera is useful only if its workflow fits your habits.
- Price the complete system. Compare the body plus the lens you actually need, not just an advertised body price. If you expect to expand later, check compatible lenses and the cost of that path.
- Match video and action requirements to the exact model. Check resolution, crop, autofocus, and recording needs against the camera’s specifications. A feature name alone does not establish that a model will suit your particular shooting conditions.
- Check the local listing and bundle. Prices, stock, and included lenses can vary by region and change over time. Confirm what is in the box before comparing offers.
An entry-level example: Canon EOS R100
As one illustrative beginner option, Digital Camera World’s buyer guide, updated 1 October 2026, names the Canon EOS R100 as its beginner/cheap-camera pick. The guide specifies an APS-C, 24.1MP body with a Canon RF-S mount. It also notes a fixed non-touch screen, cropped 4K video, limited ISO range, and the additional expense of buying a lens.

This example illustrates why the body price is not the whole purchase and why feature trade-offs matter. The guide’s retailer comparisons fluctuated when it was reviewed, so check current local prices, stock, and bundle contents rather than treating any quoted offer as permanent. The R100 is an example of an entry-level route, not a universal recommendation.

So, is a digital camera worth buying in 2026?
Buy one if a specific photographic need justifies the extra cost and effort—especially if you value optical reach, lens choice, or hands-on control enough to carry and use a separate device. Keep using your phone if convenience, automatic processing, and quick sharing matter more than those capabilities. The market is still active, but your subjects and habits—not shipment growth—should decide.
