Sometimes—but only when the package costs less than the things you would actually buy separately. Compare the full price for every required traveler and cruise day against likely use, after subtracting drinks, meals, or internet already included in your fare or promotion. There is no universal drink-count break-even point: package terms and prices vary by cruise line, sailing, and booking.
How to decide whether a cruise package is worth it
Work from your booking’s actual terms, not a headline benefit or another traveler’s price. For each package, estimate the à-la-carte cost of only the items you expect to use, then compare it with the package’s all-in cost.

- Find the total cost. Include the whole cruise, every guest the rules require to buy, and any service charges or gratuities. Check whether the price changes by sailing or purchase date.
- Estimate realistic use. For drinks, count the kinds and number you would normally order. For Wi-Fi, consider how many people and devices need access and whether you need streaming. For dining, count specialty meals you would choose even without a package.
- Check coverage and limits. Verify eligible venues, excluded items, speed or device limits, meal counts, and booking restrictions.
- Subtract what is already included. Account for standard dining and beverages, promotional credits, and benefits already attached to your booking.
- Compare like with like. A package is financially worthwhile when the cost of benefits you would genuinely use exceeds its total cost. Do not count hypothetical use to make a bundle look valuable.
Convenience may still matter to you, but treat it as a separate reason to buy—not proof that the package saves money.
Are cruise drink packages worth it?
They can be, if the drinks you expect to order would otherwise cost more than the package and its required purchases. Before doing the math, check which beverages and venues qualify, whether the package must cover every cruise day, and whether other adults in your room must buy it too.

Royal Caribbean: check the room rule and exclusions
Royal Caribbean says its beverage packages are honored at bars and lounges, the Windjammer Café, Main Dining Room, and private destinations during normal business hours. Room service and minibar are excluded. An alcoholic beverage package must be purchased for the full cruise and by all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom if one buys it. Other packages may be purchased individually, but packages are for one guest and cannot be shared. The line says packages are available across its ships, though some sailings may not offer them. Check the Royal Caribbean beverage FAQ for the terms that apply to your sailing.
There is also a dated inclusion change to note: Royal Caribbean says that beginning March 15, 2026, the Deluxe Beverage Package and Refreshment Package no longer include a Coca-Cola Freestyle cup; guests may buy one onboard for $4.99 to use Freestyle machines. Confirm the current policy before relying on that detail.
Why a universal break-even drink count does not work
The package price, drink eligibility, required buyers, and what you already receive can all differ by sailing and booking. Carnival, for example, says beer starts at $6.50 on its drink-packages page, but that example is not a complete current price list or enough to calculate a package break-even point. Check your booking’s package terms and current menu prices rather than applying a fixed drink count.
Is cruise Wi-Fi worth paying for?
Start with what you need to do online. Occasional messaging or checking email may not justify a higher-tier plan; regular video calls or streaming may require a different package. Compare the actual speed, device allowance, and access period with your needs, and count the cost for everyone who needs connectivity.

NCL’s Free at Sea page describes 150 minutes of Wi-Fi for guests in the stateroom. It also lists optional upgrades: a Voyage Wi-Fi Pass at $29.99 per stateroom per day with 1.5 Mbps, and a Streaming Voyage Wi-Fi Pass at $39.99 per stateroom per day. These are NCL-listed prices, not market-wide rates; verify the offer version and current terms for your booking.
Should you buy a cruise dining package?
Compare the number of specialty meals included with the number you would actually book and pay for separately. Check which restaurants qualify, how many meals the offer covers, and any reservation restrictions. Do not count a meal as a saving if you would have chosen included dining instead.
Rank #4
NCL’s Free at Sea offer describes three specialty dining experiences on a seven-day cruise. Its package page also describes specialty dining based on sailing length, so check your itinerary and booking terms rather than assuming every cruise receives the same number of meals.

When a bundle makes sense—and when it does not
A bundle can be appealing when it replaces several purchases you already want. Value each benefit separately: an excursion credit, drink allowance, meal, or internet access only contributes savings if you would otherwise pay for it. A bundle may cost more than buying just the benefits you need, even when its headline list looks generous.

NCL Free at Sea and Free at Sea Plus
NCL describes its base Free at Sea offer as including unlimited premium beverages, specialty dining based on sailing length, 150 minutes of Wi-Fi for guests in the stateroom, and an eligible shore excursion credit for the first guest on the reservation. The offer’s details depend on the booking, so confirm which version applies.
NCL lists Free at Sea Plus at $49.99 per person per day. The page describes enhanced beverages, unlimited streaming Wi-Fi, prepaid service charges, and 50% off additional specialty-dining nights. Guests who already prepaid service charges or received them through a promotion get a $15 discount off the package price, according to NCL. NCL Holdings says the offer applies to eligible sailings departing February 1, 2026 onward. See the NCL offer details and NCL Holdings announcement, then compare the upgrade only with benefits you expect to use.
Where to verify package terms and prices
Use the cruise line’s current information and your own reservation, since availability and terms can be sailing-specific. Royal Caribbean’s FAQ explains beverage rules and exclusions; NCL’s offer page lists its Free at Sea benefits and upgrade prices. Carnival’s package page and drink-packages page describe offers subject to terms, with some packages limited to selected sailings. For a firm comparison, use the package options and menu prices shown for your booked itinerary.
