Are CompTIA Certification Prep Courses Worth It Without Hands-On Labs?

CompTIA prep can be worthwhile without buying separate labs. Check your exam version and included practice, then decide whether you need hands-on experience for exam prep or broader skills.

Yes—CompTIA exam prep can be worthwhile without buying a separate lab package, but the right choice depends on your certification, exam version, experience and goal. Some Network+ N10-009 materials already include simulations, while other course packages differ. Labs can help build practical skills, but the available evidence does not show that buying them is necessary to pass.

First check what “without labs” actually means

Course names alone do not tell you what practice is included. CompTIA’s comparison for Network+ N10-009 describes CertMaster Learn as including lessons, videos, practice questions, performance-based questions, hands-on simulations and a graphical Network Modeler for network design and troubleshooting. Its description of CertMaster Perform includes instruction and labs in live and simulated environments, plus a diagnostic pre-test and a learning plan. These are vendor descriptions, not independent evaluations of teaching quality or exam outcomes. Check the current official listing and exam objectives before purchasing; the comparison covers particular Network+ versions, not every CompTIA course.

The April 2024-named Network+ N10-009 comparison lists more than 1,100 practice questions and 146 simulated labs. Those figures belong to that comparison and version; do not assume they describe other certifications or a current package. CompTIA Network+ Learning Products Comparison.

When a course without separate labs may be enough

  • Your immediate goal is exam preparation. Lessons, practice questions and performance-based questions may suit a learner who mainly needs to review objectives and get familiar with exam-style tasks.
  • You already have practical experience. Guided exercises may add less if you regularly perform the relevant tasks already.
  • The course includes simulations. A package may offer hands-on activities even if you are not buying a separately named lab product. Confirm the contents for your exact exam code.
  • You have a way to practice the software tasks elsewhere. A local virtual machine can support some software-side exercises, though it does not provide hardware practice.

When labs may be worth the extra effort

Labs are more compelling when you want to learn by doing, need structured practice, or are building applied skills beyond exam familiarity. They can give you a place to work through tasks rather than only read about them. That is a different benefit from proving that the purchase will improve your chance of passing: the sources available do not establish that labs raise pass rates or are required for a pass.

Practical experience may matter for job readiness even when a learner questions whether each lab task helped with a particular exam. Decide whether you are paying for exam practice, broader skill-building, or both.

What learner reports can—and cannot—tell you

Experiences vary. In an August 2026 CySA+ discussion, one learner said CertMaster Learn and its performance-based questions helped with knowledge and exam familiarity, but found the labs lengthy and of limited value for that person’s exam goal. The learner also felt the actual exam questions were more complex than the practice experience. This is one person’s account, not a general measure of usefulness or exam similarity. Read the CySA+ discussion.

Other discussions show different preferences: a January 2026 learner said CertMaster Learn did not fit their learning style, while another valued access when school or work paid for it. In a March 2024 A+ discussion, one learner found the content and performance-based questions useful but expensive when self-funded; another preferred video lessons and local virtual-machine practice. These are anecdotal reports about different certifications and versions, not a head-to-head evaluation. Read the January 2026 discussion and read the March 2024 A+ discussion.

Compare a course against your needs before paying

  1. Match the exam code. Confirm the certification and exam version shown in the course listing; for example, N10-009 materials should not be assumed to describe a different Network+ version.
  2. Inventory the included practice. Look for lessons, practice questions, performance-based questions, simulations, live labs and instructor support. A package may include some hands-on activities without a separate lab purchase.
  3. Choose the goal. Decide whether you need exam familiarity, concept review, practical job skills, or a mix. A course can serve one goal better than another.
  4. Account for your experience and learning style. Guided labs may be useful if you are new to the tasks; a learner who prefers videos or already has experience may get more from another format.
  5. Weigh who pays and what else you can use. A self-funded learner may judge value differently from someone whose employer or school provides access. If the course lacks labs, consider whether local software practice fills a real gap; virtual machines do not cover hardware work.
  6. Verify the current package and price. Product contents can vary by certification and version. Check the current official listing rather than relying on an older comparison or a forum post.

So, do you need to buy CompTIA labs?

No universal answer fits every learner, and the evidence does not show that a lab purchase is required to pass. Start by checking what your exact course already includes. If it has enough practice for your exam goal—or you have relevant experience or another way to practice—separate labs may not be worth the added cost or time. If you need structured, applied practice, labs may be valuable for skill-building even without proven pass-rate benefits.
