What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—an inexpensive phone can be safe for banking and payments if the exact device still receives security updates, is Play Protect certified, and meets the requirements of your bank and payment service. Price alone is not a reliable safety test. Check the phone’s support status and payment compatibility before trusting it with financial apps.
What makes a phone safe enough for banking?
Look at the software and the device’s support—not its price tag. A screen lock and careful app installation help, but they do not compensate for an operating system that no longer receives security fixes.

- Current security updates: Check the Android security update date and Google Play system update on the phone.
- Future support: Confirm with the manufacturer or carrier how long that exact model will receive updates. Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and carrier, and older phones may not be able to run newer Android versions. Google’s Android version guidance explains where to check; its update guidance also notes that schedules vary.
- Play Protect certification: Check that the device is certified in Google Play. Certification is separate from the Play Protect feature that scans apps.
- Payment-service requirements: Confirm that your wallet or bank supports the device, Android version, region, and verification method you plan to use.
Check the phone’s update status
- Open Settings and find the entries for Android version, Android security update, and Google Play system update. The exact menu names can differ by phone.
- Install any available updates, then check whether the manufacturer or carrier still provides updates for the exact model. Google says schedules vary and recommends contacting the manufacturer or carrier for device-specific information.
- If the device is no longer supported, do not treat a recent-looking Android version or a screen lock as a substitute for ongoing security fixes.
For Google’s instructions, see Check and update your Android version.
Confirm Play Protect certification
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then go to Settings → About.
- Look for Play Protect certification.
Google warns that uncertified devices may not be secure, may not receive system or app updates, and may have apps or features that do not work properly. Certification does not mean every app is safe; it is a separate device status. See Google’s certification instructions and explanation.

Check the wallet’s payment and verification rules
Screen lock and identity verification
Google Wallet requires a screen lock and user verification for payments. Its help page lists a PIN, pattern, password, and Class 3 biometric unlock as supported verification methods; Class 1 and Class 2 biometrics are not supported for this purpose. Check Google Wallet’s verification requirements and your own wallet’s rules before relying on a particular unlock method.
NFC and regional requirements
Tap-to-pay rules can depend on the service and country. For example, Google’s India-specific help page says the phone must have NFC, Android 9.0 or higher, and HCE for the described card tap-to-pay use. That is not a universal specification for every wallet or region. If you use Google Pay in India, check its India tap-to-pay troubleshooting and requirements.
Keep app and device protections enabled
- Install banking and payment apps from Google Play or another source your provider explicitly approves.
- Keep Play Protect enabled. Google describes it as checking apps and devices for harmful behavior; its guidance also recommends checking for Android and security updates.
- If you install apps from outside Google Play, review Google’s advice on enabling improved harmful-app detection and avoid installing apps from untrusted sources.
- Use a strong device lock and keep the phone’s software updated. App scanning and a lock are useful safeguards, not replacements for supported software.
See Google’s guidance on removing malware or unsafe software on Android and Android security and privacy settings.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to compare two inexpensive phones
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Current software | Android version, security update date, and Google Play system update status on the specific handset. |
| Future updates | The manufacturer’s or carrier’s support commitment and timing for that exact model; schedules vary. |
| Device certification | Play Protect certification status in the Play Store. |
| Payment compatibility | The service’s requirements for Android version, NFC, screen lock, verification method, and your location. |
Do not assume that all low-cost Android phones have the same support or certification. The relevant facts are model-specific, and a payment service’s requirements may also differ by region.
