Are Blu-ray Discs Still Worth Buying?

Blu-ray can be worth buying if you want a physical copy and have compatible hardware. Here’s how standard Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray differ—and what streaming comparisons can and can’t establish.

Yes—Blu-ray can still be worth buying if you want a physical copy and have a player that supports the disc format. Standard Blu-ray offers 1080p video; Ultra HD Blu-ray adds support for UHD and HDR, but requires an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Whether either is the better choice depends on the particular edition, your equipment, and whether you prefer owning a disc to accessing a title through streaming.

What Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray offer

Standard Blu-ray is a 1080p format. The Blu-ray Disc Association says it can deliver up to 7.1 channels of uncompressed surround sound, but those are format capabilities, not a promise that every disc contains that video or audio. The association describes Blu-ray as delivering “full 1080p video resolution to provide pristine picture quality”; “pristine” is its promotional wording, not an independent test result. Ultra HD Blu-ray supports UHD content and HDR, with progressive frame rates of 24, 25, 50, and 60 frames per second. Those specifications describe what the format supports. They do not establish that every release uses HDR or that a particular disc will look better than a particular stream; the title, edition, and playback setup matter. Do you need a 4K Blu-ray player?

For an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, yes: you need an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. It can also play current standard Blu-ray content. A standard Blu-ray player cannot play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray Disc Association: format compatibility FAQ

Is Blu-ray better than streaming?

There is no universal answer established by these format specifications. They describe disc capabilities, not a head-to-head test against a particular streaming service, title, or playback setup. Nor do they establish that discs are always cheaper, that streaming catalogs are always broader, or that buying a disc guarantees perpetual access.

For a useful comparison, check the exact title and edition, whether you already own compatible playback equipment, and whether you want a physical copy or online access. Prices, title availability, and streaming catalogs can vary by region, date, and service.

When buying a disc makes sense

  • Choose standard Blu-ray if 1080p suits your display and you want a physical copy without needing UHD playback.
  • Consider Ultra HD Blu-ray if you want its UHD and HDR capabilities and have—or plan to get—an Ultra HD Blu-ray player.
  • Compare the specific release rather than assuming every edition uses all the features its format supports.
  • Stick with streaming for a title if online access suits you better and the service you use carries the edition you want.
