Looking up an address does not send bitcoin or reveal a private key. The privacy tradeoff is that the explorer receives your web request, and your lookup may connect your network details with interest in a public address or transaction.
Are Bitcoin block explorers safe to use?
For ordinary viewing, a block explorer displays public blockchain information; it does not custody or process the funds shown. Blockstream describes its Explorer as collecting and displaying information about Bitcoin transactions broadcast to the network, and says it does not control the funds shown. That distinction matters: an explorer can show transaction activity, but it is not the wallet or service that sent or received the bitcoin. Blockstream Help Center: What is Blockstream Explorer?

Safety still depends on using the genuine site and treating it as a website, not as a trusted wallet. Use the exact domain of a known explorer and check for HTTPS. Never enter a seed phrase or private key: a read-only lookup does not need signing secrets. These are basic precautions, not a claim that every explorer has been independently audited.
Can someone see that I looked up my Bitcoin address?
The explorer operator receives the request. What that operator records or retains depends on its own practices; the available information does not establish that every explorer logs search terms or how long any operator keeps them.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Blockstream’s published privacy policy says its sites automatically collect information including IP address, access times, browser type and language, and referring-site information. That is Blockstream’s disclosure and should not be generalized to other explorers. If an address is associated with you, a lookup can potentially associate your network identity with your interest in that address. Blockstream Privacy Policy
Does checking a transaction expose my IP address?
A hosted lookup is a web request, so the operator may receive connection information such as an IP address. Blockstream lists IP addresses among the information its sites automatically collect. Whether another explorer collects or retains comparable details is not established here.

Bitcoin transactions are public independently of the lookup. Bitcoin.org explains that every confirmed transaction is published to the blockchain, and Blockstream notes that standard Bitcoin transaction amounts are visible in an explorer. Bitcoin addresses are pseudonymous, not inherently anonymous: information outside the blockchain can link an address to a person. Can a block explorer steal my bitcoin?
Simply viewing an address or transaction does not give an explorer control of the bitcoin associated with it. A displayed balance or transaction record is public information, not evidence that the explorer holds the funds. Do not provide wallet secrets to a site claiming they are needed to look up an address. If funds appear missing, contact the wallet or service involved in sending or receiving them; an explorer only displays blockchain information.

How do I check a Bitcoin address more privately?
| Method | Who receives the lookup | Privacy tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted block explorer | The explorer operator receives the web request. | The operator may receive connection details; the confirmed transaction history remains public. |
| Bitcoin Core on your own node | Your local software processes blockchain history to find wallet transactions. | This can avoid sending that lookup to a hosted explorer, but requires local software and resources and does not make the public blockchain confidential. |
| Hosted explorer through Tor | The explorer still receives the request. | Bitcoin.org describes Tor as a way to help hide your computer’s IP address; it does not hide public ledger data. |
Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin Core as processing blockchain history locally to find wallet transactions. For repeated wallet-history checks where avoiding a third-party query matters, a local-node workflow is an option, with the cost of setup and local resources. Bitcoin.org also documents Tor compatibility in Bitcoin Core and recommends considering Tor to hide a computer’s IP address. Tor can reduce exposure of your ordinary IP address, but it cannot remove or conceal confirmed transactions from the public blockchain.
