Automated UI tests can be slow, but the elapsed time may come from waits, browser startup, servers, external resources, long test journeys, or a crowded CI runner—not just your application. Measure where time accumulates first. Then target that phase: wait for the UI state the test needs, isolate test data, and add parallel workers only when runner and backend capacity can support them.
What “slow” means in a UI test
A browser test measures an entire automated journey: setup, browser launch, navigation, application and API responses, UI changes, assertions, and teardown. Its runtime is not a direct measure of application speed. Selenium cautions that WebDriver is generally not advised for performance testing because browser, network, server, third-party, and instrumentation effects can distort the result (Selenium performance-testing guidance).

There is no universal runtime threshold or optimal worker count in the guidance reviewed here. Whether a suite is too slow depends on what it covers, where it runs, and which phase consumes its time.

Break a representative run into observable phases rather than guessing from the total duration. Use your framework’s trace or logs and, where available, network evidence. Playwright recommends traces for diagnosing CI failures and behavior (Playwright best practices).
#1 Best Overall
| Phase | What to inspect | What a delay may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and browser launch | Fixture setup, browser startup, runner allocation | Expensive setup, constrained CI resources, or browser startup overhead |
| Navigation | Navigation timing and requests in traces or logs | Server response time, network delay, or slow external assets |
| UI transition | When the required element or state becomes available | Rendering, hydration, application work, or a wait targeting the wrong signal |
| Assertion and retries | Assertion duration and retry behavior | State is late, unstable, or not the condition the test expects |
| Teardown | Cleanup, session shutdown, and data removal | Slow cleanup or shared backend dependencies |
The relative contribution of each phase varies by application and environment. A temporary fixed sleep can help test whether a race is involved: if it makes the race disappear, synchronization may be the problem. Treat that as a diagnostic, not the permanent fix; a fixed delay makes every run wait even when the page is ready sooner (Selenium troubleshooting).
Common causes and targeted fixes
Waiting for the wrong signal
A navigation readiness state does not necessarily mean a JavaScript application has rendered the state your next action requires. Rendering, hydration, or other application changes may continue after navigation completes. Wait for the relevant element or outcome instead. Selenium documents explicit waits, while Playwright actions and retrying assertions wait for relevant conditions (Selenium waiting strategies; Playwright actionability).
- Replace a fixed sleep with a condition-based wait or retrying assertion tied to the needed UI state.
- Avoid stacking generic waits without evidence; they can add delay without making the test more reliable.
- Make the condition match the next user-visible action, such as a result appearing or a control becoming actionable.
Browser journeys doing too much
End-to-end tests are valuable for checking meaningful user behavior, but repeating costly browser setup for every preparatory step can make a suite unnecessarily long. Keep browser coverage focused on paths where browser-level confidence matters. Use controlled setup or lower-level tests for preparation when that preserves the confidence the test is meant to provide.

External pages and resources can change or display overlays outside your team’s control. Playwright recommends avoiding reliance on uncontrolled external pages and describes network controls for supplying needed responses (Playwright best practices). Cypress recommends splitting very long spec files; its FAQ says there is no single runtime threshold that prevents crashes because risk depends on the application and available hardware (Cypress FAQ).
Browser, server, network, or instrumentation overhead
Time spent starting a browser, waiting for an HTTP server or a third-party JavaScript or CSS host, and running automation instrumentation can all affect test duration. Track those sources separately where possible instead of assuming the application itself is responsible. Cypress also notes that instrumentation adds overhead (Cypress FAQ). For application performance, use performance-focused measurements rather than treating an end-to-end suite’s raw runtime as a benchmark.
Too little or unsafe parallelism
Parallel workers can reduce wall-clock time when tests are waiting in a queue and the environment has enough capacity. Playwright runs workers as separate processes and lets teams limit their number (Playwright parallelism). More workers can instead compete for CPU, memory, browser capacity, or backend capacity.
Rank #3
Parallel browser contexts do not prevent collisions in shared backend records or other external state. Give tests independent data and avoid sharing mutable state; Selenium documents avoiding shared state as a test-practice recommendation (Worth InstallingWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
