Alexa’s green light usually signals a call or Drop In—not that the device is generically listening to nearby conversation. Drop In does create a real privacy trade-off: an authorized caller can connect without you answering, and supported Echo Show devices may use their cameras. You can limit or disable the feature, but it is worth checking exactly who has permission and what that permission covers.
Why is my Alexa light green?
The meaning depends on the pattern and device. Amazon says a pulsing green light on an Echo speaker indicates an incoming call; a spinning green light means an active call or Drop In. On Echo devices with screens, a green bar can stay on while a call or Drop In remains active after you leave the call screen. Amazon’s speaker-light guide and screen-device indicator guide describe these signals.

So a green light is a communication-status indicator, not by itself evidence that someone has secretly activated the microphone to listen to ambient conversation. If it appears unexpectedly, treat it as a possible call or Drop In and check whether one is active.
If the green light will not turn off
Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance says a spinning or flashing green light can indicate an incoming or active call or Drop In. Say “Alexa, hang up” to end a session. If you do not recognize what started it, review Alexa voice history for a misheard request, then consider turning off Drop In or Communications for that device. Can someone Drop In without you answering?
Yes. Drop In is an optional intercom-like feature, and a permitted user can connect without the recipient answering. Amazon says the audio or video connection begins automatically; the recipient hears a tone and sees an indicator. That makes Drop In convenient for household communication, but it also means access permissions matter more than they do for an ordinary call that must be answered.
Amazon describes two relevant permission scopes:
- Household Drop In: Supported devices associated with the Amazon household can connect, including when they are in different physical locations.
- Contact Drop In: The contact must be given permission, and Amazon says permission is required from both parties for contact Drop In.
There is an important scope detail in Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use: granting Drop In permission to yourself also gives permission to household members, while granting it to a contact extends permission to that contact’s household. When reviewing access, consider the household associated with each approved contact, not only the individual name shown in the app.

Can Drop In turn on the camera?
On a supported Echo Show, Drop In can include video. Amazon says the caller initially sees a privacy-blurred camera view that transitions to clear video. The recipient can end the session or turn video off while continuing an audio conversation. Amazon also describes a recently active indicator on some Echo Show and Echo Spot devices and in the Alexa app for people with Drop In permission; on Echo Show, that indicator is based on Alexa interactions and motion sensors. Details are in Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs.

What does Amazon say about encryption and voice data?
Amazon says default Alexa calls and Drop Ins are end-to-end encrypted. It also says that when enhanced communication features, including group Drop In, are enabled, calls are temporarily decrypted, processed, and re-encrypted in the cloud. Amazon states that it does not retain call audio or information about call content. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its service; they are not an independent cryptographic audit.
That statement about calls should not be confused with ordinary Alexa interactions. Amazon says that when an Echo detects its wake word, a visual or audible indicator signals that audio is being recorded to stream to the cloud. Its terms also say Alexa interactions and related information are processed and retained in the cloud for purposes such as responding to requests, transcription, and service improvement. Amazon says users can review and delete voice recordings associated with their account. The call-content statements and the treatment of Alexa interactions are separate; see the Alexa Terms of Use and Alexa FAQ.

How do I reduce or turn off Drop In?
Use the Alexa app’s current communication and device settings; labels and menu placement can change. Amazon’s FAQ and Drop In help page document these controls:

- Review contact Drop In permissions and revoke any you no longer want.
- Disable Drop In on a particular device, or turn off Communications there if you do not need Alexa communication features.
- Use Do Not Disturb on a device when you want to prevent Drop In temporarily.
- On a supported screen device, turn off video or end the session if you do not want the camera active. Audio may continue if you turn video off.
- For an unexpected session, say “Alexa, hang up,” then review voice history and adjust the relevant permission or communication setting.
Camera and physical microphone/camera controls can affect other device features, including Live View on applicable models. Consult the help page for your Echo model before relying on a control to disable only one function.

How serious is the privacy risk?
The main practical risk is not the green light itself; it is leaving Drop In enabled with broader permissions than you intend. A person with access may connect without an answer, and household-level permission can extend beyond the named account holder. On screen devices, video is another consideration. The safeguards Amazon describes—indicators, a tone, permission settings, and session controls—give users ways to manage access, but they do not make the feature equivalent to a call that requires you to pick up.
Amazon has not supplied a numerical measure of Drop In privacy incidents in the cited materials, so there is no supported incident rate to compare against. Its encryption and retention descriptions are company statements, not independent verification.
