AirPods 5 are a reasonable midrange choice if you want open-fit earbuds with noise cancellation, but the available comparisons do not establish them as the best AirPods for ANC. Tom’s Guide found only a slight ANC advantage over AirPods 4 with ANC, while T3 notes that the AirPods 5’s unsealed fit lets some outside sound through. Whether they are the right pick depends on how much isolation you need and which case configuration you choose.
What AirPods 5 ANC can—and cannot—do
AirPods 5 combine active noise cancellation (ANC) with an open-fit design: unlike AirPods Pro, they do not use silicone ear tips to seal the ear canal. That can suit listeners who dislike in-ear tips, but it also means ANC has less help from passive isolation.
In its review, T3 observed that announcements and some higher-frequency sounds could remain audible with ANC enabled. That is a reviewer’s experience, not a universal measurement, but it highlights the practical trade-off: ANC reduces some noise; it does not make an open-fit earbud behave like a sealed pair.
Tom’s Guide’s direct comparison characterized the AirPods 5’s ANC advantage over AirPods 4 with ANC as slight and said neither model was groundbreaking for noise cancellation. Its reviewer recommends silicone-tip earbuds for stronger isolation. These are editorial observations, not results from a standardized test by Freedom251.

AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 4 with ANC
AirPods 4 with ANC are the closest comparison if you want Apple’s open-fit style. Tom’s Guide scored AirPods 5 at 13/20 for ANC and AirPods 4 with ANC at 12/20 in its own scorecard; those scores reflect that publication’s review method, not standardized measurements.

|---|---|---|
| Fit | Open-fit, without silicone ear tips; T3 says this limits passive isolation. | Open-fit comparison model. Apple’s support specifications list ANC among its audio features. |
| ANC comparison | Tom’s Guide score: 13/20; its reviewer described the advantage as slight. | Tom’s Guide score: 12/20. Both scores are that publication’s review ratings, not standardized measurements. |
| Apple-stated listening figure | Up to 6 hours with Noise Control off for the configuration described in Apple’s comparison footnote; up to 7 hours for the Wireless Charging Case configuration, under Apple’s stated test conditions. | Up to 4 hours with ANC on under the conditions in Apple’s test footnote. |
| Current price | Not stated in the cited sources. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
Battery figures are not an ANC head-to-head test: Apple’s AirPods 5 figures above are for Noise Control off, while the AirPods 4 figure is for ANC on. Apple says the AirPods 5 test used preproduction earbuds and preproduction iPhone 18 Pro units with prerelease software in July and August 2026. These manufacturer test claims should not be read as guaranteed everyday runtimes.

Which AirPods should you choose?
Choose AirPods 5 if you want an open fit and ANC
The AirPods 5 make sense if silicone ear tips are a deal-breaker and you want ANC in an open-fit design. Apple lists standard and Wireless Charging Case configurations; check the exact version before buying because the case configuration changes Apple’s stated listening figure.
Choose AirPods 4 with ANC if they fit your priorities better
They are the direct open-fit alternative. Tom’s Guide’s comparison suggests the AirPods 5’s ANC lead is modest, not a reason by itself to rule out AirPods 4 with ANC. Compare the current price and case features for the specific versions you are considering; the cited sources do not establish retailer pricing.

Consider AirPods Pro 3 if isolation matters most
AirPods Pro 3 are a relevant higher-tier alternative if you want silicone ear tips and a physical seal. That design addresses the open-fit limitation, though the cited comparisons do not provide a standardized, directly comparable ANC result across these models.

How to make the decision
- Decide on fit first. If you do not want silicone tips, compare AirPods 5 with AirPods 4 with ANC. If stronger passive isolation is important, consider AirPods Pro 3.
- Match battery claims to the configuration. Apple’s up-to figures differ by case and Noise Control setting; do not compare its AirPods 5 Noise Control-off figures directly with an ANC-on figure as though they came from the same test.
- Check the exact model and case. Apple’s comparison page lists AirPods 5 in standard and Wireless Charging Case configurations alongside AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro models. Lineups and availability can change.
- Weigh ANC against your actual surroundings. If you need to reduce announcements or higher-frequency sounds substantially, the open fit may not meet your expectations; reviewer accounts note those sounds can remain audible.
