Sometimes, but not automatically. Whether an AI agent can see your texts depends on the specific feature and the access you give it. Reading message history, reading notifications, composing or sending a message, and processing text you share yourself are separate capabilities. Check the assistant’s permissions and data practices rather than assuming every AI in a messaging app works the same way.
What “access to your messages” can mean
An assistant may interact with texts in several distinct ways. A permission to compose or send a message does not necessarily let it search earlier conversations. Notification access may expose message previews without granting access to the messaging app’s full history. And pasting, forwarding, or uploading a conversation gives the service the content you chose to share, subject to that provider’s handling and retention practices.

- Message history: Can the feature open or search existing conversations?
- Notifications: Can it see incoming-message previews or reply from a notification?
- Sending: Can it draft or send a new message, and what permission enables that?
- Shared content: What happens after you paste, forward, or upload text?
“AI agent” is not a single permission model. Behavior varies by assistant, operating system, messaging app, settings, and feature.
Can Gemini read your texts on Android?
Google’s documentation distinguishes between its Gemini Messages integration and notification access. For the Messages integration, the Google app needs SMS permission; Gemini can help compose and send texts, but Google says it cannot read or summarize messages directly from the Messages app. You can disconnect Messages in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings. Google states: “Messages that you create with the Gemini app are not end-to-end encrypted.” That statement is about messages created with Gemini; it is not a blanket description of every conversation in Google Messages or WhatsApp.
Notifications are a separate route
Google says Gemini may still access notifications when its device-assistance app is connected. That route can let Gemini read or reply to messages in notifications, including WhatsApp notifications. Disabling the Messages integration therefore does not by itself establish that notification access is also disabled. Google also notes that device contacts may remain accessible if the Google app has Contacts permission.

What does Meta AI do with WhatsApp messages?
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted. For Meta AI features that use personal-message context, WhatsApp describes Private Processing as a way for Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp being able to read those messages. These are company descriptions of specific features, not a guarantee about every AI tool used with WhatsApp. WhatsApp also says some features may not be available to every user. Incognito Chat is a named feature, not a general setting
Meta’s May 2026 announcement describes Incognito Chat as a temporary conversation processed in a secure environment that Meta says it cannot access; it says chats are not saved and messages disappear by default. Meta described rollout as taking place over the coming months, so availability may vary. Treat these statements as Meta’s description of Incognito Chat, not as a general promise about Meta AI or other agents. Meta’s announcement has the feature details.

Third-party WhatsApp agents have separate providers
WhatsApp says third-party agents are independently created and operated. Their providers may set separate terms and policies; WhatsApp says it does not own, build, operate, control, verify, or endorse individual agents. Before sharing messages with one, review that provider’s privacy policy, retention terms, and permissions rather than assuming Meta AI’s protections apply. WhatsApp’s terms of service describe the distinction.
What happens to text you share with ChatGPT?
Service data handling is different from device access: OpenAI’s documentation about ChatGPT through Apple integrations does not establish that ChatGPT can read SMS or message history on your device. OpenAI says handling through those integrations depends on whether you connect a ChatGPT account and on your settings. Without an account, OpenAI says requests are processed to provide a safe response and comply with applicable laws, and that it does not receive your IP address, store requests, or use them to train models. With an account, account data preferences apply; interactions may be saved in account history and used to improve services depending on your choices and use. ChatGPT agent history and screenshots
OpenAI says ChatGPT agent chats, browsing history, and screenshots remain in conversation history until deleted; deleted chats and associated screenshots are deleted from its systems within 90 days. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu data is not used for model training by default. Consumer-plan handling differs and follows the applicable privacy policy and settings. - Name the exact feature. Identify whether you mean a writing suggestion, a connected assistant, notification replies, an in-app chatbot, or a third-party agent.
- Review operating-system permissions. Check SMS, notifications, contacts, and any accessibility or assistant-role access relevant to your device. For Gemini’s Messages integration, Google specifically identifies SMS permission; its notification capability uses the device-assistance app.
- Check connected-app settings. In Gemini, review Connected Apps and disconnect Messages if you no longer want that integration. Check the assistant’s equivalent controls for other products.
- Separate reading from sending. Find out whether the feature can read history, see notification previews, compose, or send. One capability does not prove the others are enabled.
- Review the provider’s data rules before sharing text. If you paste, forward, or upload a conversation, check how the service handles retention, account history, training, and deletion.
- For third-party WhatsApp agents, assess the provider separately. Read its terms and privacy policy; WhatsApp does not verify or endorse individual agents.

- Does it access message history, notifications, or only content you share?
- Which permission, connection, or account setting enables that access?
- Can it read, summarize, compose, or send messages?
- Does content go to a service, and how does the provider describe processing?
- Are prompts, chat history, or screenshots retained?
- What controls apply to training, deletion, and disconnecting the integration?
The documented examples here cover particular Google, WhatsApp, Meta, and OpenAI features; they do not establish how every messaging app, AI vendor, device, or account behaves.
