Choose the compute platform first—wireless microcontroller, Linux-plus-microcontroller system, or industrial controller—then match its carrier, connectivity and I/O to the deployment. Wi-Fi on a module, for example, is not the same as cellular access added through a carrier or modem.
Which Portenta board fits your IoT project?
Arduino’s product descriptions distinguish the Portenta options by compute model and intended use. They are not independent performance comparisons; base your choice on the work the device must do and the interfaces it needs.

| Project need | Candidate | What Arduino documents | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless embedded controller handling real-time and higher-level tasks | Portenta H7 | STM32H747 dual-core microcontroller with Cortex-M7 and Cortex-M4 cores, plus onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Arduino describes using the cores for high-level code and real-time work. | Confirm required peripherals, workload and power budget; the product description is not a benchmark. |
| Linux applications alongside microcontroller control | Portenta X8 | NXP i.MX 8M Mini processor running Yocto Linux alongside an STM32H747 Arduino microcontroller. Arduino documents containerized applications. | Confirm which work belongs on Linux and which on the MCU. Check current terms if considering the optional X8 Manager fleet service. |
| Wireless IoT node, gateway or remote-control application | Portenta C33 | Renesas Cortex-M33 microcontroller with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; Arduino lists gateways, remote control, fleet management and process tracking among its target applications. | Validate required I/O and carrier compatibility for the particular design. |
| Factory sensing, actuation or soft-PLC-style control | Portenta Machine Control | A centralized industrial control product with isolated digital I/O, 4–20 mA-compatible analog I/O, temperature channels, Ethernet, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and RS485 options. | Check electrical ranges and installation requirements in its manual; this is an industrial control product, not simply another compact development board. |
How to choose connectivity and expansion
Start with the network the device must use at its actual deployment site. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are onboard the H7 and C33; Ethernet, cellular and field interfaces may require a compatible carrier or module. A Portenta carrier adds connections to a compute module—it is not itself a substitute for one.

How to connect a Portenta to Arduino Cloud or a deployment network
The connection path depends on the board and project. Arduino documents the Vision Shield as one route for connecting an H7-based machine-vision setup to Arduino Cloud or user infrastructure. For other builds, select the onboard wireless connection or a compatible carrier and modem, then configure the required service and network credentials using the documentation for those exact components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Identify the compute board. Decide whether the application needs H7 or C33 microcontroller operation, X8’s Linux-plus-MCU arrangement, or Machine Control’s industrial I/O.
- Choose the network path. Use onboard Wi-Fi/Bluetooth where appropriate, or select a documented Ethernet, cellular or field-interface expansion compatible with the board.
- Verify the full hardware combination. Check connector, camera, HAT, modem and peripheral support against the precise carrier and module documentation—not just the Portenta family name.
- Confirm deployment prerequisites. For wireless or cellular installs, validate local coverage, supported bands, service/SIM needs and any power or installation requirements. For managed fleets, check the current terms of the service being considered.
- Implement and test the intended data path. Confirm the board can reach the chosen cloud or user infrastructure and that the application handles loss or absence of connectivity as the deployment requires.
What to verify before committing to a Portenta design
- Compute split: determine whether the workload needs a microcontroller, Linux alongside real-time control, or centralized industrial control I/O.
- Network: distinguish onboard Wi-Fi/Bluetooth from Ethernet, cellular, LoRa or field-bus connectivity supplied through expansion hardware.
- Interfaces: list required sensors, actuators, cameras, storage and display connections, then check their compatibility with the precise module and carrier.
- Power and site: validate the power budget and the realities of the deployment location, including network availability and installation constraints.
- Operational needs: decide whether the project needs containerized Linux applications, fleet monitoring or secure over-the-air updates, and check the current service terms for optional management tools.
Arduino describes X8 Manager as an optional service for fleet monitoring and secure OTA updates, and says custom containers can run without an additional subscription. Commercial service terms can change, so confirm current terms directly before planning a fleet around them.
