ArchiveBox manages a collection of saved URLs; SingleFile turns a page into a portable, self-contained HTML file. They solve different parts of the offline-saving problem, and they can work together: ArchiveBox lists a SingleFile snapshot among its available outputs.
ArchiveBox and SingleFile at a glance
| Question | ArchiveBox | SingleFile |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Import URLs and organize captures in a self-hosted archive. | Save a web page as a self-contained HTML file. |
| How you capture | URL input and supported imports, using its command-line interface or self-hosted web interface. | Browser extension for a current page, selected content, frames, multiple tabs or automatic capture; also offers a command-line interface. |
| Typical organization | Snapshot folders within an archive. | Individual files saved to the configured download destination or another configured destination. |
| Available representations | Depending on enabled extractors and installed dependencies, a snapshot can include HTML, PDF, PNG screenshot, WARC, and other extracted content. | Primarily a single HTML file; the project also documents a self-extracting ZIP option. |
| Best fit | A growing collection, repeatable URL imports, or multiple capture formats for each page. | A quick, portable copy of a page or a small set of tabs. |
These fit recommendations follow from the projects’ documented workflows and formats, not from a controlled head-to-head test. Neither tool guarantees that every live page will work or look exactly the same offline.

How ArchiveBox saves web pages
It organizes captures as an archive
ArchiveBox accepts URLs and stores captured material in snapshot folders inside a local archive. It is designed around collection management: you can add URLs manually or import them from sources such as bookmarks, browser history, RSS, and link-saving services. A self-hosted web interface and CLI provide ways to work with the archive, and scheduled ingestion can support ongoing collections.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOne URL can produce several kinds of output
ArchiveBox documents multiple possible outputs, including a SingleFile HTML snapshot, a wget clone and WARC data, a rendered DOM dump, PDF, PNG screenshot, article text, title, favicon, headers, and supported media or other extracted content. The snapshot folder keeps results as ordinary files.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
These are available capture methods, not a promise that every extractor will succeed for every URL. Actual output depends on the enabled extractors, installed dependencies, and the page itself. Inspect captures when completeness matters.
How SingleFile saves web pages
It makes a standalone page file
SingleFile is available as a browser extension and CLI. The extension can save the current tab, selected content or a frame, multiple tabs, or pages automatically. Its CLI captures pages using a headless browser. The normal result is a self-contained HTML file; the project also documents a self-extracting ZIP option and compares formats such as MHTML, Safari Web Archive, and HTML with a separate resource folder.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

With the extension, saved files normally go to the browser’s configured download destination, though other destinations can be configured. Browser compatibility and distribution can change, so check the project’s current release information for the browser and platform you use.

Offline does not mean fully interactive
SingleFile removes scripts by default because they can alter rendering and may not work offline. Options let you keep scripts, but that does not guarantee interactive features will work without the original site or its services. Some pages also rely on request headers such as Referer to load images, and browser security restrictions can limit capture of protected domains, canvas image representations, or video-element snapshots.

Can ArchiveBox save a page as a single HTML file?
Yes. ArchiveBox lists a SingleFile HTML snapshot among its output options. That lets you use ArchiveBox’s URL-import and collection workflow while retaining a standalone HTML representation where the relevant capture method is enabled and works for the page.
This does not make the tools identical: ArchiveBox coordinates an archive and may produce several formats, while SingleFile is focused on creating a portable page file. If the HTML capture is important, verify the output on representative sites and confirm the required dependencies and extractor settings in your installation.

Which one should you choose?
Choose SingleFile for a page you are viewing
- You want a portable standalone HTML copy with minimal archive-management setup.
- You are saving one page, selected content, or a small set of tabs.
- You prefer to work from the browser or use SingleFile’s CLI for captures.
Choose ArchiveBox for a collection
- You need to collect many URLs, import sources, or schedule ongoing captures.
- You want pages organized in a local archive rather than managing files one by one.
- You want several possible representations—such as HTML, PDF, screenshots, or WARC—for a URL.
Use both when the workflows complement each other
If you want ArchiveBox’s collection workflow and a SingleFile-style HTML output, consider enabling ArchiveBox’s SingleFile capture method. The output remains subject to the site, extractor configuration, and installed dependencies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For formal preservation, check the required standard
SingleFile’s FAQ says it is not intended as professional web-archiving software, particularly for academic use, and points to WARC-based tools. ArchiveBox documents WARC as one possible output. Having WARC output alone does not establish that a workflow meets an institution’s preservation policy; assess validation, metadata, storage, and access requirements against the standard you must meet.

What a saved page can and cannot preserve
A saved copy is not necessarily a faithful replay of a live site. Scripts, remote services, headers, protected browser contexts, and changing page behavior can affect what gets captured or works offline. ArchiveBox offers multiple output types, but breadth of formats is not a guarantee of complete capture. SingleFile aims for a convenient self-contained page, but its own documentation explains why scripts are removed by default and identifies browser restrictions.
- For casual offline reading, open the saved file and check that its key text and images are present.
- For important records, keep the original URL and capture date with the saved material, and inspect the output rather than assuming success.
- For research or institutional preservation, determine the required archival format and validation process before choosing a capture workflow.
ScreenshotNeo as an alternative for screenshot captures
If your need is a clean image or PDF of a web page rather than a local archive or a standalone HTML file, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a replacement for ArchiveBox’s collection management or SingleFile’s portable HTML output.
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
For the API options and parameters, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
