ArchiveBox is a capable self-hosted web archiver for people who want control over their own collection and are prepared to operate it. It can capture pages in several formats and can be managed through a web interface or command line. The trade-off is that you—not a hosted provider—own installation, dependencies, storage planning, updates, and safe access to archived content. Docker Compose is the project’s recommended starting point, but it is still a self-hosted deployment rather than a one-click hosted archive.
What ArchiveBox does well
It captures more than a screenshot
ArchiveBox accepts URLs and imports such as browser history and bookmarks. Depending on the tools and settings used, it can save original HTML, CSS and JavaScript, single-file HTML, screenshots, PDFs, WARC files, page metadata, and media. That breadth is useful when a screenshot alone would not preserve enough context.

These are supported capture methods, not a promise that every page will be preserved completely. ArchiveBox combines third-party extractors, and results can vary with a site’s access controls, authentication requirements, dynamic behavior, and later changes.
It offers web and command-line workflows
You can manage a collection through the web UI or CLI. The project describes SQLite and filesystem storage for collection data. The web server is optional if you only want to archive through the CLI.

You control the collection
Self-hosting gives the operator control over where the collection runs and where its files are stored. That is valuable for personal or organizational archives, but it also makes deployment, maintenance, backups, and exposure controls your responsibility.
How difficult is setup?
Setup difficulty depends on how comfortable you are operating a server. The project recommends Docker Compose because it includes the extras and is intended to make setup and updates easier. That reduces dependency wrangling, but assumes you can install and use Docker. A native or package-based installation is possible, but brings more Python and runtime/system dependency management.
The project’s installation wiki, edited September 20, 2026, estimates that setup usually takes less than about ten minutes. Treat that as the project’s estimate, not a guaranteed or independently measured time: host preparation, Docker familiarity, storage configuration, and troubleshooting can add work. See the current installation wiki for release-specific requirements and commands.

Recommended route: Docker Compose
- Choose a compatible Linux or macOS host and install Docker using its current official instructions.
- Follow the ArchiveBox project’s Quickstart to fetch its Compose configuration into a data directory, pull the container, and start the service. Use the commands currently documented there rather than copying stale commands from a third-party guide.
- Open the running instance and create the first administrator account at
/admin/. - Review storage location, backup arrangements, and access controls before importing a large collection or exposing the service beyond your machine or trusted network.
Native installation and CLI-only use
The project also documents uv and package-based routes. Choose these if you prefer not to run the web service or need a native workflow, but expect to manage host-level runtime and extractor dependencies yourself. CLI-only archiving does not require operating the web server.
Supported hosts and resource planning
The installation wiki lists Ubuntu, macOS 13 or later, and Docker on Linux or macOS, on amd64 or arm64. It states a 1 GB RAM minimum and recommends 2 GB or more. Other operating systems are not tested or supported for the release covered by that wiki; check its current version-specific guidance before deployment.
The wiki cautions that a 1 GB VPS running full default crawls should have at least 4 GB of swap. Swap is not a substitute for adequate memory, but this warning matters if you are considering a small virtual server.

Estimate disk use from your capture settings
ArchiveBox’s project documentation gives a broad estimate of about 1 GB to 50 GB per 1,000 snapshots. The project attributes most of that range to whether audio or video is captured and to the configured maximum media size. It is not a fixed allowance or a reliable prediction for every collection.
Before importing at scale, decide which extractors and media you need, capture a representative sample, and measure the resulting files on your own setup. The project recommends compression- and deduplication-capable filesystems such as ZFS or BTRFS for efficiency. It also says the SQLite index should preferably remain on a local drive, while the archive folder can use network or slower storage. Plan backups and available capacity around your actual capture mix rather than choosing a drive size from the estimate alone.
Capture reliability and limits
ArchiveBox brings together multiple third-party extraction tools, so compatibility is not uniform across websites. A page that is blocked, requires an account, relies heavily on dynamic scripts, or changes after capture may not produce the result you expect. The availability of HTML, PDF, image, WARC, and media outputs is useful flexibility, but does not establish complete fidelity for every target.

For important material, inspect captures rather than assuming that a successful job means every format contains everything you need. Keep original URLs and capture context with your collection, and test your chosen settings on representative pages before relying on them for an organizational record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Replay security deserves deliberate configuration
Archived JavaScript should be treated as untrusted. ArchiveBox documents a default approach that isolates full replay on *.localhost subdomains and disables JavaScript replay on ordinary public or LAN hostnames. Enabling full replay on other subdomains requires wildcard DNS and TLS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the instance is reachable by other people or from the public internet, understand these replay boundaries and configure the deployment accordingly. A saved page can contain active content; preserving it does not make it safe to execute in the same origin as your application or users’ ordinary browsing.

Who should choose ArchiveBox?
- A good fit: people or organizations that want a self-hosted collection, value multiple capture formats, and can maintain a Docker or native deployment.
- Think carefully first: anyone with limited server administration experience, little disk headroom, or a requirement for dependable capture of authenticated or highly dynamic sites without testing.
- Plan for operations: decide who updates the installation, monitors storage, backs up the archive and index, and controls access to replayed content.
Or skip the browser setup
ArchiveBox is for building and operating an archive; for a clean screenshot or PDF from a single URL, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. It is not a replacement for ArchiveBox’s self-hosted collection or its range of archival formats.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
