For a current ArchiveBox Docker deployment, make Nginx proxy requests to the ArchiveBox listener on port 5797 inside the container, and set BASE_URL to the exact public HTTPS address people use, such as https://archive.example.com. Keep the two values distinct: BASE_URL is the public canonical URL; BIND_ADDR is the local socket ArchiveBox listens on. Check your deployed image and port mapping before choosing the Nginx upstream, because older ArchiveBox examples use different ports.
Understand the three addresses involved
A reverse-proxy deployment has separate public and private connection details. Confusing them is a common cause of unreachable services and incorrect absolute links.

The ArchiveBox configuration reference calls BASE_URL “The canonical public URL of your ArchiveBox instance.” Do not put your public domain in BIND_ADDR as a substitute.

Choose the canonical URL
Set BASE_URL to the exact public HTTPS URL visitors will use, including the scheme and hostname. For example, if Nginx serves ArchiveBox at https://archive.example.com, use that value—not an internal container name, LAN address, or HTTP upstream address.

ArchiveBox uses an explicitly set BASE_URL instead of the incoming Host header when building URLs. It also derives Django’s ALLOWED_HOSTS and CSRF_TRUSTED_ORIGINS from BASE_URL and SERVER_SECURITY_MODE. Avoid copying old examples that hard-code those separately without checking the settings for your deployment.
Choose the listener and proxy target
The current official Docker image starts ArchiveBox with archivebox server --init 0.0.0.0:5797; the service listens on port 5797 inside the container. The Docker image repository documents the current image. A host port can be mapped to a different number, so distinguish the container port from the host-side port when configuring Nginx.
The configuration reference gives 127.0.0.1:5797 as a loopback listener appropriate for a same-host proxy and 0.0.0.0:5797 for Docker networking or remote LAN access. Inside a container, binding only to 127.0.0.1 makes the service unreachable from outside that container. Select the listener that matches your network layout; do not expose a service more broadly than your deployment requires.

Configure the proxy without mixing old port examples
- Identify the actual ArchiveBox image and deployment mapping. Check the Compose configuration or container configuration for the image version, listener, and any published host port.
- Make the ArchiveBox service reachable from Nginx. If both containers share a Docker network, use the ArchiveBox service’s network name and its container listener port. If Nginx runs on the host, use the host address and the port published by Docker. These are deployment choices; the correct upstream cannot be inferred from the public hostname alone.
- Configure Nginx to terminate HTTPS for the public hostname and proxy requests to that reachable upstream. Use the Nginx configuration method for your installation. The ArchiveBox sources establish its URL and listener settings but do not prescribe a complete Nginx
locationblock or universal timeout and WebSocket directives. - Set ArchiveBox’s canonical URL to the public HTTPS URL and make sure the configured certificate covers that hostname.
- Test the public URL and generated links. Check that the site loads over HTTPS and that redirects and absolute links use the public hostname and HTTPS scheme.
For Nginx Proxy Manager and other supported proxy choices, the current ArchiveBox Docker guide describes a first-run HTTPS wizard. It provides DNS, upstream, and certificate settings, checks public HTTPS URLs, then saves BASE_URL and SERVER_SECURITY_MODE. If you use that flow, follow its values for your deployment rather than combining them with unrelated legacy snippets.
Handle forwarded HTTPS and security mode
When BASE_URL is empty, the configuration reference describes deriving the request scheme and specifies trusting X-Forwarded-Proto for proxy-derived HTTPS. When you have set an explicit public BASE_URL, use that canonical HTTPS URL as the source of truth. Do not assume that changing the proxy’s upstream to HTTP should change the public URL to HTTP.
If your deployment uses safe-subdomains-fullreplay, explicitly pin BASE_URL. ArchiveBox says it is required for redirects in that mode and displays a misconfiguration banner when it is missing.
Choose certificate coverage for the host pattern
The HTTPS guidance distinguishes a single public host from ArchiveBox subdomains. A single-host setup needs a certificate for the BASE_URL host. If the security mode uses ArchiveBox subdomains, the guide describes a certificate covering that host and *.BASE_URL, usually obtained with DNS-01. It warns against on-demand TLS and individual certificates for snap-* hosts. A wildcard is not a universal requirement for every installation; match certificate coverage to the host pattern your deployment actually uses. See the ArchiveBox HTTPS guide.

Verify the effective settings after changes
ArchiveBox configuration may come from archivebox config --set, ArchiveBox.conf, or process environment variables. Persisted settings and scoped configuration can take precedence over later environment changes. After editing a Compose environment variable or another setting source, inspect ArchiveBox’s effective configuration rather than assuming the new value took effect.
As a final check, confirm that BASE_URL is the public HTTPS address, the listener is reachable on the expected interface and port, and the public site’s redirects and absolute links use the intended host and scheme.
Troubleshooting common proxy problems
- Nginx cannot connect to ArchiveBox: Check whether Nginx is targeting the correct network address and port. The current Docker image listens on container port
5797, but the published host port may differ. Also check whether ArchiveBox is bound to loopback inside its container; that prevents other containers from reaching it. - Links or redirects show an internal hostname or the wrong domain: Set
BASE_URLto the exact public canonical URL, then verify the effective configuration. An explicit value takes precedence over the incomingHostheader for URL building. - Links or redirects use HTTP despite public HTTPS: Verify the explicit
BASE_URLincludeshttps://. If relying on proxy-derived scheme handling with no explicit base URL, check the documentedX-Forwarded-Prototrust behavior. - A deployment using
safe-subdomains-fullreplayshows a configuration warning or redirects incorrectly: SetBASE_URLexplicitly and ensure the certificate covers the host pattern required by the deployment. - Changing an environment variable appears to have no effect: Check for a persisted setting or scoped configuration that takes precedence, and inspect the effective ArchiveBox configuration.
- A copied Nginx example points to port 8000 or 8098: Those ports appear in older documentation examples. Verify the actual image and mapping; do not treat an old port as the current Docker listener by default.

No. An external drive is an optional place to store a collection on a separate persistent volume; it is not part of the reverse-proxy or base-URL configuration.
