The Aqara Motion Sensor P1 is a Zigbee 3.0 motion and ambient-light sensor for automations, but it requires a compatible Aqara hub rather than pairing directly with any Zigbee system. Its standout settings are an adjustable motion timeout and three sensitivity levels; its advertised five-year battery life is conditional, and Aqara’s US and Europe pages disagree about the battery type.
What the Aqara Motion Sensor P1 does
The P1 (model MS-S02) uses passive infrared (PIR) sensing to detect body motion and also reports ambient-light conditions. Through an Aqara hub, you can use those readings for automations and alerts. For example, Aqara describes turning on a light when motion is detected while brightness is below a chosen threshold; its 30-lux example is configurable, not a fixed operating limit. Aqara’s product page lists three sensitivity settings—high, medium and low—and a detection timeout adjustable from 1 to 200 seconds.

The timeout controls how long the sensor waits before it can report motion again. A longer interval may reduce repeated notifications or automation triggers, while a shorter one can make the sensor respond again sooner. Aqara’s setting range is a product specification; actual behavior depends on the device, hub and automation setup.

Yes. The sensor communicates over Zigbee 3.0 and requires an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub for setup and operation. Aqara’s manual says to add it through the Aqara Home app with the hub installed. It is not presented as a sensor that can be paired directly with any Zigbee hub. Aqara’s Europe product page says its hub is not compatible with other brands.

Compatibility can depend on hub configuration and region, and Aqara cautions that some third-party integrations may not be available everywhere. For Apple HomeKit use, the manual additionally requires an Apple Home Hub. Check the support information for your region and intended platform before buying.
Coverage, dimensions and placement
Aqara’s US specifications give the P1 dimensions of 33.1 × 33.1 × 41.6 mm, a weight of 33 g, an approximate detection distance of 7 m and an approximate detection angle of 170 degrees. The product page qualifies the field of view: 170 degrees up to 2 m, narrowing to 150 degrees at up to 7 m. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified room-coverage measurements. Walls, furniture, installation angle and the room layout can affect whether a particular position detects movement.

Aqara’s manual recommends mounting the sensor 1.2–2 m above the floor. It includes a holder and sticker for mounting, but warns that the sticker may loosen on smooth, moist, hot, rough or uneven surfaces. Avoid pointing the sensor at heat sources: infrared interference can cause false triggers. Aqara’s manual provides the installation guidance.

Aqara advertises up to five years of battery life, but attaches conditions to that figure: LED indication must be off and detection timeout must be at least 30 seconds. This is a manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed lifespan or an independently measured result. Frequent activity, settings and conditions may affect how long a unit lasts; no independent endurance test is established here.

There is also a conflicting battery specification on Aqara’s regional pages. The US specifications and comparison table say the P1 uses two CR2450 batteries, while the detailed battery section on the Europe page says two CR2430 cells. Because the listings conflict, do not choose replacement batteries from the regional web listing alone. Check the packaging or manual supplied with your exact unit before replacing them.
How it compares with Aqara’s original motion sensor
Aqara’s own comparison presents the P1 as an update to its original motion sensor. The figures and feature differences below are Aqara’s claims, not independent comparative test results.

The battery-type conflict matters here: Aqara’s comparison table uses CR2450 for the P1, but the Europe product page’s detailed battery block says CR2430. Confirm the battery specified for the particular regional unit rather than treating the comparison table as definitive.

The P1 makes most sense if you already use, or intend to build around, a compatible Aqara hub and want motion-triggered automations with adjustable timeout and sensitivity. If you need a sensor that pairs directly with a non-Aqara Zigbee hub, the stated hub requirement is a significant limitation. Its range, field of view and battery runtime should be treated as vendor specifications and claims, not independently verified performance.
