An invalid value in stored agent metadata is dropped, so the agent inherits the project’s autonomy setting; an invalid value entered directly with the CLI is rejected with an error that lists accepted choices. This avoids guessing—but inheritance may be broader than the restriction you intended.
What APC and APX each control
APC carries portable project context, including agent files, roles, skills, and metadata. APX is the local runtime that reads that context and enforces tool permissions on the machine. A portable declaration can request an autonomy mode, but APX determines the effective local permission.

totalruns tools without confirmation.automaticopermits safe work, while some destructive, outbound, runtime, MCP, and filesystem-mutating actions can require confirmation.permisoruns tools listed inallowed_toolsdirectly and asks for confirmation for other tools.
How an agent gets its autonomy mode
An agent’s Autonomy: declaration overrides the project baseline for that agent’s turn. If the agent has no declaration, it inherits the project setting. Inheritance is therefore a meaningful configuration state, not a synonym for a particular mode.
#1 Best Overall
What happens when an autonomy value is invalid?
APX handles stored metadata and direct CLI input differently. The distinction reflects where the mistake occurs: a stored declaration is discarded in favor of the project baseline, while a person entering a value in the terminal receives an explicit correction path.
| Situation | Described behavior |
|---|---|
No --autonomy flag |
The current agent setting remains in effect. |
--autonomy inherit |
The agent override is cleared, and the project mode applies. |
--autonomy automatico, permiso, or total |
The agent receives that explicit override. |
| Unrecognized value in stored agent metadata | The value is dropped, and the agent inherits the project baseline. |
| Unrecognized value entered directly through the CLI | The command is rejected and reports accepted modes, including inherit. |
Why APX does not guess a nearby mode
A typo does not reliably reveal the user’s intent. Mapping an unknown string to a “close” mode could grant more permission than intended, or apply a restriction the user did not choose. Rejecting direct input makes the mistake visible rather than silently inventing a policy.
Rank #2
Dropping invalid stored metadata avoids fuzzy-matching a typo into a permission mode, but it does not guarantee that the intended restriction remains active. If the project baseline is broader than the agent’s intended mode, the malformed agent override is lost and the broader baseline applies instead.
How to make an agent inherit the project setting—or keep a narrower override
For an explicit inheritance state, use --autonomy inherit. If you mean to set an agent-specific restriction, use one of the recognized values exactly in the agent metadata rather than relying on a typo or an assumed fallback.
- Check the agent file’s
Autonomy:value and confirm it is spelled exactly astotal, automatico, orpermiso, or remove the declaration if the agent should inherit. - Compare the project baseline with the permissions intended for that agent. A missing or invalid override leaves the project mode in effect.
- Test an action that should require confirmation under the intended mode. If it proceeds without pausing, stop and correct the configuration before relying on that restriction.
What the described runtime flow establishes
The cited APX article says a valid agent override is applied to the active turn configuration before the permission guard and risk handling. That is the article’s account of APX behavior; it is not independently confirmed here by source-code inspection or a software test. The source result displayed a Sep. 30 publication date but did not establish the year.
