VueScan

What VueScan is

VueScan is scanning software for documents, photos, film, and slides that replaces scanner software. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and supports over 8,000 scanners from 42 manufacturers. Document features include auto-crop, OCR, multi-page PDFs, deskewing, and blank-page removal. Film and slide tools include infrared dust and scratch removal, faded-color restoration, multi-exposure scanning, and IT8 calibration. VueScan also offers AI colorization, super-resolution, and on-device touch-up for dust, scratches, and unwanted objects. Paid editions are available monthly, annually, and as one-time purchases. Standard editions include flatbed scanning, JPG/PDF/OCR/TIFF, auto-crop, and document-feeder support; Professional editions add RAW output, professional options, and film/slide scanner support. A trial can be used for as long as desired, but trial scans have a watermark that cannot later be removed. One-time purchases can be used indefinitely and include one year of free updates. Personal licenses cover up to four personally owned computers; business and other non-personal use requires a license for each computer.

Who it suits

VueScan suits home users and organizations that need scanning features beyond their scanner software, including people with unsupported scanners. Its film and slide tools may suit users digitizing those materials.

Limits

Trial scans carry a watermark that cannot later be removed. Personal Standard and Professional licenses cover up to four personally owned computers, while business and other non-personal use requires a license for each computer. One-time purchases include one year of free updates.

Getting started

1. Visit the VueScan website.
2. Choose a monthly, annual, or one-time Standard or Professional edition, or start the trial.
3. Install the software on Windows, macOS, or Linux; Linux downloads are offered as DEB, RPM, or TGZ packages.
4. Connect a supported scanner and select the scanning tools and output formats available in your edition.

Verdict

VueScan combines document scanning with film and slide tools across three desktop operating systems. Before choosing an edition, consider the trial watermark and the computer licensing rules for personal versus non-personal use.
