SQL LRS is a self-hosted Learning Record Store for keeping xAPI statements, attachments and documents. Its documentation lists SQLite, Postgres, MariaDB and MySQL support. Built-in conditional logic can assess incoming activity and create internal xAPI statements for validated outcomes. Structured SQL data can be used with analytics tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Looker and Apache Superset, as well as AI systems that work with structured databases. Authentication choices include OpenID and API credentials with keys, secrets and scopes. SQL LRS is available through GitHub, DockerHub and Platform One’s Iron Bank, but customers host their own deployments. The maker says its Iron Bank containers are certified for deployment in Platform One IL2 and IL4 environments, and that the software conforms to IEEE 9274.1.1. It is open source under Apache 2.0 and may be used in commercial projects. The software is free; implementation and support services are quoted separately. SQL LRS is not an LMS or content store, and does not itself create learning data or host learning content.

Who it is for

SQL LRS suits organizations that need to store xAPI activity from systems such as LMS, AR/VR/XR or simulation tools and connect learning data with business or AI systems. It requires customers to host the deployment themselves.

What is good

What to know first

  • Customers must host the deployment themselves.
  • It is not an LMS or content store.
  • It does not create learning data or host content.
  • Implementation and support services are quoted separately.

Verdict

SQL LRS is a free, self-hosted option for storing and working with xAPI records in SQL-based environments. It is not a learning platform for creating data or hosting content, and service contracts are separate.
