Nephio

What Nephio is
Nephio is an open-source, Kubernetes-based project for intent-driven automation of network functions and supporting infrastructure. Users describe high-level intent, and the system can set up cloud or edge infrastructure, render initial network-function configurations, and deliver them to the appropriate clusters. Kubernetes declarative management and active reconciliation help maintain networks through failures, scaling events, and infrastructure changes. Its framework uses kpt, ConfigSync, and a Configuration-as-Data approach to author, review, publish, clone, and customize configuration packages. Nephio is developing extensible Kubernetes resource models aligned with 3GPP and O-RAN standards. Named cloud integration points include Google Config Connector, AWS Controllers for Kubernetes, and Azure Service Operator. Automation covers Kubernetes primitives and extensions such as multi-network Pods and SR-IOV. The reference architecture separates an orchestration Kubernetes cluster from site clusters where intent is applied. Nephio supports multi-cluster management, GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, Google Cloud Source Repositories, Kubernetes clusters, and GKE.
Who it suits
It is aimed at telcos, cloud providers, and network-function vendors, while enterprises and startups can join the community. It suits teams needing domain automation across Kubernetes-based network environments.
What it does well
- Open-source and free to use
- Intent-driven infrastructure and configuration automation
- Active reconciliation during failures and scaling
- Configuration packages managed with kpt and ConfigSync
- Supports multi-cluster Kubernetes management
What to know first
- Does not provide end-to-end service orchestration
- Does not deliver cloud infrastructure
- Does not deliver network functions
- Requires Kubernetes-based deployment
Limits
Nephio's scope stops at domain automation: it does not deliver end-to-end service orchestration, cloud infrastructure, or network functions.
Getting started
- Open the Nephio website and project documentation
- Prepare an orchestration Kubernetes cluster
- Prepare the site Kubernetes clusters or GKE targets
- Choose a supported Git source for configuration packages
- Use kpt, ConfigSync, and Configuration-as-Data to author packages
- Define intent and deliver configurations to the appropriate clusters
Verdict
Nephio focuses on automating network-function domains through Kubernetes intent, configuration packages, and reconciliation. It is useful when infrastructure and workload configuration must be coordinated across clusters, but broader service orchestration remains outside its scope.
