Approach Mapper is an open-source tool designed to help learners get started when a programming, math, or other STEM problem leaves them staring at a blank page. Rather than leading with a finished answer, it surfaces clues, suggests a method, maps possible decisions, and reveals hints in stages.
What Approach Mapper does
Developer Rahulrr built Approach Mapper for a friend learning data structures and algorithms and math. Its central goal is to make the first reasoning move visible. As Rahulrr puts it, “They get one thing: a way to start the STEM problem in front of them.” Read the project post on DEV Community.

A learner can provide a problem as pasted text, an uploaded photo or .txt file, or an image pasted from the clipboard. The tool then offers several kinds of guidance:
- Clues in the statement: details that may matter to a solution.
- A suggested pattern or method: examples in the post include hash maps, two pointers, and invariants.
- A decision-path mind map: a visual structure for considering possible approaches.
- Step-by-step questions: prompts intended to guide the learner’s own reasoning.
- Progressive hints: a four-level ladder revealed in stages, so the learner can seek more help without immediately jumping to a complete solution.
The project also classifies the input and declines problems it does not recognize as STEM. That makes its intended use narrower than a general-purpose chatbot: it is aimed at helping someone begin a STEM problem, not at responding to any prompt.

How the app is built and configured
The project README describes Approach Mapper as a model-agnostic, MIT-licensed app with a FastAPI backend and a single-page frontend. Its client talks to a chat API compatible with the OpenAI API format, configured through environment variables. A text-capable model can handle text problems; image submissions require a model with vision capability. The README says the app can connect to a local model server or a hosted endpoint such as OpenRouter. See the project README.
“Model-agnostic” means the app is not described as being tied to one specific model, but the experience still depends on the model and endpoint selected. A smaller model may produce weaker maps, and image understanding requires more than a text-only model.

Local versus hosted use: where your problem data goes
Privacy depends on the endpoint configured for inference, not simply on using Approach Mapper. With a suitable local model and a local endpoint, the README says the submitted material stays on the user’s machine. If the endpoint is hosted, the problem text and images are sent to that provider for processing. Check the endpoint configuration and the provider’s data-handling terms before submitting material you consider sensitive.

Rahulrr reports initially running Gemma locally, where their hardware took 8–15 minutes per problem, then moving the same model to a cloud GPU instance. That is the author’s account of one setup, not a general performance benchmark; the post does not identify the GPU provider.

Limitations to keep in mind
- Image and handwriting recognition can fail: poor image quality or difficult handwriting can make the input harder to interpret.
- Model capability affects guidance: smaller models may create weaker maps, and image input needs a vision-capable model.
- Output formatting may need another try: the README notes that structured JSON can require a retry.
- The reasoning may be wrong: the tool is a guide, not a verified tutor or guaranteed-correct solver. Check its suggestions against the problem and your own reasoning.
- It does not preserve a learner’s history: the project lists no history, account system, or multi-page memory.
Who may find it useful
Approach Mapper is most relevant to someone who understands the problem statement but cannot identify a first move, especially when learning programming patterns, data structures and algorithms, or math. Its staged hints and questions can help keep the learner involved in the reasoning. Someone seeking a dependable final answer, persistent tutoring history, or reliable interpretation of difficult handwritten work should not treat it as a substitute for those capabilities.
