Applitools Eyes Visual Testing in GitLab CI for Indian Teams

A practical guide to adding Applitools Eyes visual checks to GitLab CI, choosing the right SDK, protecting credentials, reviewing baselines, and evaluating India-specific hosting and pricing questions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run Applitools Eyes visual tests in GitLab CI, add the Eyes SDK for the test framework your project already uses, provide the API key securely in CI, and place visual checkpoints in tests at meaningful screen states. GitLab runs those tests; Eyes compares captured screens with approved baselines, and your team reviews differences before accepting a change. The exact runner image and pipeline commands depend on your language, framework, and GitLab setup.

How Eyes fits into a GitLab CI pipeline

Applitools describes Eyes as a visual testing service that adds checks to existing test frameworks. Its integration catalog lists GitLab as a source-control integration and lists CI/CD integrations separately. In practical terms, the SDK is part of your test suite: your existing tests open the application, reach a screen state, and call an Eyes checkpoint. The SDK captures that state and sends it to the Eyes Server, which compares it with a baseline. Your team reviews the result and decides whether a difference is a defect or an intentional change before updating the baseline. Applitools’ integration catalog and Eyes overview describe these roles.

Choose the SDK that matches your tests

Start with the framework and language already used by your application tests rather than choosing an SDK to fit GitLab. Applitools lists SDKs for Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, WebdriverIO, Appium, and other stacks. Follow the official guide for the selected SDK; setup details and checkpoint calls are not interchangeable across languages. See the SDK and integration listings.

  • Playwright, Cypress, or WebdriverIO: Use the Eyes SDK guide for that framework and language, and retain the project’s normal browser-test command.
  • Selenium: Follow the guide for the language binding and browser used by your suite.
  • Appium or another supported stack: Verify the specific SDK and its prerequisites in its current official guide before changing the runner.

Applitools’ Java Selenium quickstart illustrates the general sequence, but its prerequisites are Java, Maven, Chrome, a matching ChromeDriver, an Applitools account, and an API key. Those are Java Selenium-specific requirements, not universal requirements for a Playwright or Cypress pipeline. Java Selenium quickstart.

Set up the pipeline without assuming a universal YAML file

  1. Confirm the project’s test stack. Record the language, test framework, browser, and command that currently runs the relevant UI tests locally.
  2. Create or use an Applitools account and obtain its API key. Store the key as a protected CI variable in GitLab, and reference that variable from the test process. Do not commit the key in source code, a checked-in YAML file, or a test fixture. Follow the current Applitools API-key guidance and GitLab’s CI/CD variables documentation for the project’s protection and availability settings.
  3. Add the matching Eyes SDK. Install it alongside the project’s existing test dependencies using the package and version instructions in that SDK’s official guide.
  4. Prepare the runner for the existing tests. Use a runner image and browser setup compatible with the selected SDK and project. For example, the Java Selenium quickstart’s Chrome and matching ChromeDriver requirements apply only to that example stack.
  5. Add checkpoints in the tests. Place them after the application has reached a stable, meaningful state, such as a completed page load or a submitted form’s result. Use the SDK’s own checkpoint syntax.
  6. Run the existing test command from GitLab CI. Check that the job receives the API key and that the required language, browser, and driver dependencies are available to the runner.
  7. Review the Eyes results. Inspect differences in the Eyes results interface. Treat baseline updates as a review decision: approve them only when the visual change is intended.

There is no single reliable .gitlab-ci.yml recipe for every framework in the cited setup guidance. Runner image, browser installation, framework command, parallelism, artifact retention, and protected-variable configuration depend on the project and GitLab configuration. Start from the project’s passing UI-test job and make the smallest changes needed to install the SDK, expose the key securely, and run the instrumented tests.

Plan checkpoints and baseline ownership

Choose useful screen states

A checkpoint should represent a state your team intends to keep visually consistent. In a typical test, first make the application deterministic enough to reach that state, then call the checkpoint using the selected SDK. The checkpoint is where the SDK captures the screen for comparison; it is not a replacement for the test’s navigation, setup, or assertions.

Make review responsibility explicit

Decide who reviews visual differences and who may update baselines. A changed screenshot can indicate a regression or an intentional interface update, so baseline approval should follow the team’s normal code-review ownership rather than happen automatically just to clear a failing job. The Eyes workflow returns results for inspection and allows teams to decide whether to accept a difference. Applitools’ overview of Eyes.

India-specific deployment, data, and pricing questions

Do not infer an India hosting region

Applitools documents public cloud, dedicated cloud, and on-premises configurations. That list does not establish that a particular plan offers an India region, an India data-residency commitment, or a particular latency from Indian runners. A GitLab runner’s location alone does not prove where screenshots or related metadata are processed or stored. Ask Applitools to confirm the service region available to the account and plan, screenshot and metadata handling, retention controls, contractual commitments, and expected access latency for your deployment. Check commercial terms for your account

Applitools’ pricing page displayed Starter at $667 per month when paid annually, with stated checkpoint allowances and CI/CD integrations. This is a vendor-displayed USD price, not an India quote; pricing and plan terms can change. Confirm the current amount, checkpoint limits, billing currency, taxes, and local commercial terms directly before budgeting. Do not treat a converted rupee estimate as a confirmed local price. Applitools pricing.

Evaluate fit beyond the headline price

  • Whether a supported SDK fits the language and framework your team already maintains.
  • What browsers and dependencies your chosen runner must install and keep compatible.
  • How the team will review differences and control baseline updates.
  • Which deployment configuration and contractual data handling meet your requirements.
  • Whether checkpoint limits, execution needs, concurrency, support, and total commercial terms fit the pipeline.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

  • The job cannot find the API key: Confirm the variable name used by the SDK, that the variable is available to this pipeline and branch under GitLab’s protection settings, and that the job passes it to the test process as required by the SDK guide. Do not print the secret in job logs.
  • Browser tests fail before reaching an Eyes checkpoint: Check the runner’s browser and driver installation against the selected framework’s requirements. Chrome and a matching ChromeDriver are prerequisites in the Java Selenium quickstart, but other stacks have their own setup.
  • The SDK dependency is missing or incompatible: Verify that the dependency is installed in the same environment used by the CI test command, and compare its setup instructions with the project’s language and framework versions.
  • A test reaches the screen but produces an unexpected visual difference: Inspect the result in Eyes and determine whether the application changed intentionally or the test reached a different state. Update the baseline only after review.
  • The team cannot establish where screenshots are handled: Ask Applitools about the actual service configuration, region, retention, and contractual data terms for the specific account; the documented deployment categories alone do not answer India-specific availability.
  • The planned India cost is unclear: Confirm current plan limits, currency, taxes, and billing terms with the vendor rather than relying on a converted USD figure.

If the immediate task is to capture a website screenshot rather than add visual regression checkpoints to an existing test suite, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is an alternative to try first for that narrower capture task: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Eyes integration described above serves a different workflow: framework-based visual tests and baseline review.
