Applied Energistics 2 Guide: Getting Started With ME Storage

A practical AE2 starter guide covering ME Chests and Drives, Storage Cells, terminals, power, eight-channel limits, ME Controllers, Storage Buses, priorities and bulk-transfer troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest reliable first AE2 storage system is a compact network containing an ME Chest or ME Drive, one or more Storage Cells, a power connection, ME cable and a terminal. Put the cells in the chest or drive, power the network, attach the terminal, and use its search screen to insert and retrieve items. Start small: a controller-less network has eight channels by default, and a few 4k cells are a practical starting balance between capacity and the number of item types.

This guide follows the official AE2 getting-started material for Minecraft 1.20.4. Recipe names, supported Minecraft versions and interface details can change between AE2 releases, so use documentation matching the version in your modpack before following any recipe-specific instructions.

What an AE2 storage network actually does

Applied Energistics 2 replaces a wall of individual containers with a powered network. The network does not make items disappear into the cable. Items live in Storage Cells; an ME Chest or ME Drive holds those cells and makes their contents available to connected devices. A terminal is the user-facing interface: it searches the network, displays matching items and lets you insert or remove them without opening each container.

Think of the system as four layers:

  • Storage: Storage Cells contain the item data.
  • Housing: An ME Chest or ME Drive physically holds the cells.
  • Network: ME cable carries the connection between devices.
  • Interface and power: A terminal provides access, while an energy connection keeps the network operating.

Every later feature—external chests, automation, priorities and larger cable layouts—builds on this model. If the network has power and a valid path to the storage housing, the terminal can index the cells and present one searchable inventory.

What to gather before building

Exact crafting ingredients depend on the AE2 release and the rest of the modpack. The functional checklist is stable:

  • One ME Chest for the simplest first build, or an ME Drive for a system intended to expand.
  • Several Storage Cells. The official guide recommends starting with 4k cells as a practical compromise between capacity and supported item types.
  • An energy source that can feed AE2 through an Energy Acceptor or through another compatible powered network.
  • Enough ME Cable to connect the housing, power connection and terminal.
  • One Terminal for searching, inserting and extracting items.
  • An optional Energy Cell if the network will receive large transfers or if the available power supply is prone to short surges.
  • An optional ME Controller, normally added only when the initial eight-channel limit is no longer enough.
  • Optional ME Storage Bus, Import Bus or Export Bus components if you want to use existing inventories or automate movement.

Place the first network near your main base and keep its cable run short. A compact layout makes it easier to see which devices are connected, how channels are being used and where a power or cable fault is located.

Build your first ME storage network

1. Choose the storage housing

Use an ME Chest when you want the fewest decisions and a quick proof that AE2 is working. Use an ME Drive when you expect to add more cells and organize a larger installation. The housing is not the storage itself: the cells inserted into it are what contain your items.

2. Insert the Storage Cells

Open the ME Chest or ME Drive and place the cells in its available cell slots. Begin with the 4k cells recommended by the official guide rather than filling the first system with every cell size. This gives you enough room to test searching, insertion and extraction while keeping the layout easy to understand.

3. Provide AE2 power

Connect your energy source through an Energy Acceptor, or connect the network to a compatible powered setup already supplying AE2. The network must be powered before the terminal can use the cells. If the network is unpowered, treat that as a power-path problem first rather than a storage problem.

4. Run ME Cable

Place ME Cable between the storage housing, the power connection and the location where you will use the terminal. Keep the first branch as direct as possible. Avoid building a long decorative cable run until the basic system has passed a test.

5. Attach a terminal

Connect the terminal to the powered cable path. Open it and check that the interface recognizes the network and shows the installed cells. If the terminal is blank or unavailable, check the cable path and power before changing cells.

6. Test insertion and retrieval

  1. Open the terminal.
  2. Insert a small, recognizable group of items.
  3. Use the terminal’s search field to find one of those items.
  4. Remove one item and confirm that the displayed count changes.
  5. Repeat with a second item type so you know the network is indexing more than one entry.

This test proves all four essential links—cell, housing, cable, power and terminal—at once. Once it works, add storage or automation one component at a time.

ME Chest, ME Drive and external-inventory layouts compared

There is no single best starter arrangement. Choose based on whether you value the quickest setup, predictable expansion or reuse of inventories you already own. Exact material costs and recipe details are not stated here because they vary by AE2 release and modpack.

Starter layout Storage method Upfront material cost Cells and item types Channel and expansion behavior Existing-inventory compatibility Power-buffer capacity
ME Chest starter Cells inserted directly into one ME Chest Not stated; recipe varies by version Uses the cells installed in the chest; 4k cells are the recommended starting choice Compact controller-less network; eight channels are available by default Add an ME Storage Bus later Depends on the rest of the network; add an Energy Cell if transfers cause pressure
ME Drive network Cells installed in an ME Drive Not stated; recipe varies by version Uses the cells installed in the drive; suited to adding more cells as the network grows Starts controller-less, then can be reorganized around an ME Controller and planned cable branches Add an ME Storage Bus later Depends on the network; Energy Cells can add buffer capacity
Storage Bus layout An attached chest or other inventory remains the physical storage Not stated; depends on the bus and inventory already available Uses the attached inventory’s slots and contents rather than a cell in a drive or chest Consumes network connectivity and must be included in channel planning as the network expands Native use of an existing inventory; Import and Export Buses add automation Uses the network’s available buffer; large transfers can still require additional buffering

The table’s key distinction is physical ownership of the items. Cells are managed by the ME Chest or ME Drive. A Storage Bus leaves items in the attached inventory while allowing the AE2 network to search and use them.

Storage Cells: capacity, types and sensible first choices

A Storage Cell is the actual item-holding medium in a cell-based AE2 system. The ME Chest or ME Drive only houses and exposes the cells. If you remove a cell, the items associated with it are no longer available through that housing until the cell is placed in a connected one again.

Starting with 4k cells keeps the first build manageable. It avoids committing the entire early-game resource budget to the largest possible storage while giving enough room to evaluate how many item types your base produces. Add cells as your inventory grows rather than trying to predict every future machine at the beginning.

When planning an expansion, decide whether you need more total item capacity, support for more distinct item types, or both. Those are different pressures. A network that appears to have free room can still need a different cell mix if many separate item types are being indexed.

Channels: the limit that shapes larger networks

AE2 devices communicate over channels. A controller-less network supports eight channels by default. That is enough for a small storage housing, terminal and a few additional devices, but it is not an unlimited growth path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to add an ME Controller

Add an ME Controller when the planned network will exceed the default eight-channel allowance. Controller faces provide channels, allowing a larger network to be divided into deliberate branches instead of relying on an ever-growing controller-less cable path.

Plan cable branches before adding machines

Sketch the intended branches before placing automation. Count the devices that need network connectivity along each branch, leave room for future terminals or buses, and keep unrelated machines from consuming the same small branch. A controller solves channel availability; it does not remove the need to route cables clearly.

Use dense cable for a full branch

Cable type determines how many channels a branch can carry. Dense Cable is used when a path must carry a full 32-channel load. Reserve it for trunks or heavily populated branches instead of making every short connection dense. The exact visual arrangement can change between versions, but the design principle remains: match cable capacity to the number of devices on that path.

Use existing chests with an ME Storage Bus

An ME Storage Bus lets the network treat an attached inventory as network storage. This is useful when you already have chests or another inventory full of items and do not want to move everything into cells immediately.

Attach the bus

  1. Place the inventory you want AE2 to access.
  2. Attach the ME Storage Bus directly to that inventory.
  3. Connect the bus to the powered ME Cable network.
  4. Open the terminal and search for an item that is already in the attached inventory.
  5. Insert or remove one item to verify that the bus and inventory are both reachable.

The bus does not turn the chest into a Storage Cell. The chest remains the physical location of its contents; the bus supplies the network connection that makes those contents searchable and usable.

Automate movement with Import and Export Buses

An Import Bus moves items from an attached inventory into network storage. An Export Bus moves items from the network into an attached inventory. Use them when a machine, farm or processing line needs a defined input or output direction rather than a manually accessed chest.

Set priorities deliberately

AE2 inserts an item into the highest-priority eligible storage first. When an item is removed, the network selects the lowest-priority storage. Use this rule to keep bulk materials, overflow and specialized inventories in their intended destinations.

  • Give a specialized destination a higher insertion priority when items should go there before general storage.
  • Give a general or overflow inventory a lower priority so it receives items only after preferred storage is unavailable.
  • Set removal priorities with the opposite behavior in mind: the lowest-priority eligible storage is selected when items leave the network.
  • After changing a priority, insert and remove one test item to confirm the result rather than assuming the destination changed.

Power buffering and the large-transfer reboot problem

AE2 networks have a finite energy buffer. Normal browsing and small transfers may work while a large import still fails. The official energy documentation warns that inserting many items at once can require more energy than the network can hold during that tick. When that happens, the network can run out of power and reboot.

What an energy-starved network looks like

  • The terminal or connected devices stop responding during a bulk insertion.
  • Items do not appear immediately even though the cable layout has not changed.
  • The network returns after a short interruption, suggesting a power-buffer failure rather than missing cells.

Add an Energy Cell before stress testing

Energy Cells add buffer capacity and absorb ordinary transfer surges. Place one in the network before moving a large existing inventory, running a heavy import or connecting several automated buses at once. Buffering does not replace a suitable continuous energy supply; it gives the network more room to handle short peaks.

Recover safely

  1. Stop the bulk transfer or disable the importing device.
  2. Confirm that the Energy Acceptor or compatible power connection is still receiving energy.
  3. Allow the network to come back online.
  4. Reconnect or re-enable the transfer in smaller batches.
  5. Add an Energy Cell if the same operation repeatedly causes a reboot.

A staged expansion plan that stays understandable

Stage 1: prove the core network

Use one ME Chest or ME Drive, a few 4k cells, one terminal, short cable and a working energy connection. Do not add buses or a controller until basic insertion and retrieval work.

Stage 2: separate storage roles

Add an ME Storage Bus when an existing inventory has a useful role, such as bulk overflow or a dedicated stockpile. Set its priority and test both insertion and removal before attaching more inventories.

Stage 3: add automation

Use Import Buses to bring items into the network and Export Buses to send items to machines or designated output inventories. Add one automation path at a time so a failed transfer has an obvious cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stage 4: introduce controller planning

When the network approaches or exceeds eight channels, install an ME Controller and reorganize branches. Use the controller’s channel-providing faces and reserve Dense Cable for paths that need the full 32-channel capacity.

Stage 5: reinforce energy handling

Before large-scale automation, add Energy Cells and test the heaviest expected transfer. This catches buffer problems while the network is still small enough to rewire easily.

Troubleshooting checklist

The terminal cannot see any items

  • Check that at least one Storage Cell is actually inserted into the ME Chest or ME Drive.
  • Verify that the housing, terminal and power connection share a continuous ME Cable path.
  • Confirm that the network has power; a disconnected Energy Acceptor can make a valid storage layout appear empty.
  • Remove and reinsert a test cell only after the power and cable path are confirmed.

The terminal works but an external chest is missing

  • Confirm that the ME Storage Bus is attached to the inventory, not merely placed beside it.
  • Check the bus’s cable connection and the network’s available channels.
  • Search for an item known to be in that inventory, then test a one-item extraction.

Items go to the wrong inventory

  • Review which connected inventories are eligible for that item.
  • Adjust storage priorities so the intended destination has the higher insertion priority.
  • Remember that extraction chooses the lowest-priority eligible storage, so insertion and removal may require different priority values.

The network fails only during bulk transfers

  • Stop the transfer and let the network recover.
  • Check the continuous power connection.
  • Add an Energy Cell to increase the buffer.
  • Retry in smaller batches and then retest the original operation.

New devices stop working after expansion

  • Count the channels used by the added terminals, buses and other connected devices.
  • Remember that a controller-less network provides only eight channels.
  • Add an ME Controller when the design exceeds that allowance.
  • Use cable branches sized for their load, with Dense Cable on a full 32-channel path.

Version and recipe cautions

The player-facing getting-started guide cited for this setup is the official AE2 guide for Minecraft 1.20.4. AE2 releases and modpacks can change recipe names, supported Minecraft versions and interface details. Use the guide and in-game recipe viewer that match your installation before gathering exact ingredients or assuming that a particular screen is identical.

The architecture described here is the durable part: cells hold items, a chest or drive houses cells, a powered cable network connects devices, a terminal provides searchable access, eight channels are available without a controller, Storage Buses expose existing inventories and priorities determine storage selection.
