Selected GameCube, PSP, and PlayStation 2 games reportedly reached 60 frames per second in an emulation test on Apple’s M6 Mac mini, including GameCube examples set to 12× resolution scaling and displayed at 8K. That is a result for particular games and settings—not proof that every game runs at 8K or that the emulator renders at native 8K. Apple separately specifies 8K/60Hz output for one external display; that hardware capability does not guarantee an emulated game can sustain 60 FPS at that setting.
What the M6 Mac mini emulation test reported
Notebookcheck’s October 6, 2026 report summarizes a test by ETA Prime. The performance figures below are the report’s account of that test, not results independently verified across a broader game library.

| Emulator and system | Reported examples and results | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Dolphin — GameCube | Auto Modellista and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron reportedly ran at 60 FPS with 12× resolution scaling and 8K output. | Selected games in the reported test; not a general guarantee for GameCube titles. |
| PPSSPP — PSP | Tekken 6 and God of War: Chains of Olympus reportedly ran at 60 FPS with 10× scaling. | The report says PPSSPP used Vulkan. |
| PCSX2 — PlayStation 2 | Gran Turismo 4 reportedly ran at 60 FPS with 12× scaling; God of War 2 at 60 FPS with 8× scaling. | The report says PCSX2 supports Metal. These are title-specific results. |
| RPCS3 — PlayStation 3 | Skate 3 reportedly did not run in the cited trials. | This describes the reported test and software state, not a universal compatibility verdict. The report notes macOS support can be less reliable than Windows or Linux. |
| Xenia — original Xbox; Vita3K — PS Vita | The report mentions both emulators. | It does not provide enough performance detail to make a specific frame-rate or compatibility claim. |
Emulator scaling is not the same measurement as display resolution. A multiplier such as 12× refers to an emulator’s rendering-scale setting relative to the original system’s output; it does not, by itself, establish a native 8K render resolution. The 8K figure in the GameCube examples is reported as output, and should be read separately from the scaling setting.

What Apple’s 8K specification means
Apple’s support documentation says an M6 Mac mini can connect up to three external displays, depending on resolution and refresh rate. For a single display, Apple lists up to 8K (7680 × 4320) at 60Hz over Thunderbolt or HDMI. This is a display-output specification, not a promise about emulator speed or game compatibility.
In practical terms, the Mac’s ability to send an 8K signal and an emulator’s ability to render a particular game smoothly at a chosen scale are separate questions. An 8K display is not shown to be necessary for the reported results, and the cited test does not establish which cable or monitor was used.

What the M6 hardware figures do—and do not—show
Apple lists the M6 with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. Those specifications provide context for the machine, but they do not substitute for emulator benchmarks. Apple’s comparative performance figures were measured in August 2026 on preproduction systems using selected benchmarks; they are not results from the games in ETA Prime’s test.
Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement quoted Sri Santhanam, vice president of its Silicon Engineering Group, describing the chip as “Built using the cutting-edge 2 nm process, M6 combines a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and more unified memory bandwidth to power through workloads with amazing energy efficiency.” That is Apple’s characterization of the chip, not an independent emulation finding.

- Check the exact game. A handful of titles cannot establish performance across an entire console library; compatibility and frame rate can differ between games.
- Separate output from rendering scale. 8K display output, emulator resolution scaling, and a stable 60 FPS are distinct settings or outcomes.
- Account for emulator and graphics backend. The cited report identifies Vulkan for PPSSPP and Metal support for PCSX2. It does not demonstrate that one backend or emulator is universally best.
- Be cautious with PlayStation 3 expectations. The report’s difficulty with Skate 3 is a useful warning against assuming broad RPCS3 compatibility on macOS, but it does not settle how every game or software version performs.
Emulator software, compatibility, and performance can change over time. The available report does not establish results across all emulator versions, M6 configurations, or games.
