Choose Apple Watch Series 12 if you expect to use its ECG app, hypertension notifications, more frequent heart-rate tracking and recovery insights, or you want its brighter display and broader case choices. Both require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later, so check compatibility before comparing features or prices.
What is the real difference between SE 3 and Series 12?
Both watches cover everyday smartwatch basics, including notifications, activity and workout tracking, sleep features, and an always-on display. The main reason to move up to Series 12 is its additional health sensing and the features built around it—not a different basic category of watch. Series 12 also has a brighter published display specification and more case-size and material options.

Apple lists an S10 chip and 64GB capacity for SE 3. Its specifications include a second-generation optical heart sensor, temperature sensor and always-on altimeter. Apple describes Series 12 as using an S11 chip and a Health Sensing System. See Apple’s SE 3 technical specifications and Apple Watch model comparison for the full feature listings.

Choose SE 3 if you want the essentials
SE 3 is the sensible fit if your priority is a capable everyday Apple Watch and the health features it includes meet your needs. You still get heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep tracking and sleep-apnea notifications, alongside activity and workout features. Its 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases also give you two size options.
- Pick SE 3 if ECG is not a feature you expect to use.
- Consider it if you prefer a smaller or larger aluminum case within its 40mm/44mm choices.
- Compare the actual configured prices before deciding: the cited Apple sources do not establish a current SE 3 price alongside Series 12’s U.S. launch price.
Choose Series 12 for its additional health features
Series 12 is the better match if you specifically want ECG, hypertension notifications, or the additional heart-rate and recovery insights Apple associates with its Health Sensing System. Apple says Series 12 measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and measures HRV up to 24 times more often than before. Those are Apple’s published claims; they are not independent measurements or a direct comparison against SE 3.

Apple’s September 9, 2026 launch announcement also describes a study involving over 1,000 participants that compared Apple Watch heart-rate accuracy with leading wearables. That is Apple’s description of the study, not the underlying study publication and not evidence of a direct SE 3-versus-Series 12 test. Read the Series 12 announcement for Apple’s account of the system and study.
What the health-feature difference means
Apple makes the ECG app available on Series 4 and later, excluding SE models. Apple says it can generate an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram and is intended for people aged 22 or older. SE 3 does not support the ECG app. Apple’s hypertension notifications are another Series 12 feature that may matter to buyers, subject to regional and software availability.

SE 3 does support sleep-apnea notifications. Apple says this feature is intended to detect signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea for people aged 18 or older who do not have an existing diagnosis; it is not a diagnosis. Apple also says its Vitals app is for wellness purposes, not medical use. Neither watch should be treated as a substitute for medical advice or diagnosis.

Apple lists Series 12 at up to 2000 nits and SE 3 at up to 1000 nits; both displays are always on. The higher published brightness may be useful when checking the watch outdoors, but it is a specification difference rather than an independent visibility test.

Try to decide case size and material based on wrist fit and comfort, not just the model name. SE 3 comes in 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases. Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes, with aluminum, titanium and ceramic options described in Apple’s launch material. Check the exact case and finish available in your market before ordering.

Apple rates SE 3 for up to 18 hours of normal use and up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode. Those are manufacturer estimates; actual battery life varies with use and settings. Apple calls Series 12 an all-day watch and supplies test conditions that vary by model and use. Because those claims do not provide a like-for-like independent comparison, they do not establish that one model lasts longer.
Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement says Series 12 starts at $399 in the U.S. The cited Apple sources do not provide a same-date SE 3 price, so they do not establish a precise price gap. Check Apple or retailers for the current price of the specific size, material and connectivity configuration you want; discounts and availability can change.
Check iPhone compatibility before buying
Apple lists iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later as a requirement for both watches. If your iPhone does not meet that requirement, neither model is the right purchase until you confirm an eligible setup. Health feature availability can also vary by region and language, so verify a particular feature in your country before paying extra for it.
Quick Recap
A quick decision rule
- Confirm compatibility: you need an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later.
- Decide whether you need Series 12’s additions: ECG, hypertension notifications, higher-frequency heart-rate tracking, recovery HRV/readiness insights, a brighter published display, or its larger/material options.
- If not, compare SE 3 configurations: its core health and smartwatch features may be enough, and the aluminum 40mm or 44mm case may suit you better.
- Check live prices and regional availability: compare the exact configurations rather than inferring a premium from the $399 Series 12 U.S. launch price.
