Update-related work can temporarily continue in the background; if drain persists, try the connectivity and settings changes below. Apple notes that battery life depends on several factors, including watch age and use—not one setting alone.
Why is your Apple Watch battery draining so fast?
Battery life reflects both how the watch is being used and the battery’s condition. A recent update, weak connectivity, display and background activity, or reduced battery capacity may be relevant. Start by identifying what changed rather than assuming a single feature is responsible.

It started after a watchOS update
After an update, background tasks may continue for a while even when the watch is usable. Apple advises waiting a few days and checking battery life again before treating the change as a lasting problem. See Apple’s guidance for an Apple Watch battery that drains too quickly.

Connectivity may be affecting battery use
When battery life is a priority, keep the watch near its paired iPhone. If the iPhone is not nearby, Wi-Fi uses less battery than mobile data, and signal conditions matter. If you will be somewhere without useful coverage, Airplane Mode is an option; it also limits connectivity.

Settings and usage can add to drain
Features such as Always On, background measurements, and background app activity can affect runtime. Long outdoor workouts and audio playback through the built-in speaker can also use more power. These are possibilities to check, not guaranteed causes.
What to check before changing settings
Review charge history and Battery Health
- On the watch, open Settings > Battery to review remaining charge and recent charge history.
- Open Battery > Battery Health and check Maximum Capacity. This percentage describes capacity relative to when the battery was new; it is not a prediction of remaining hours.
Apple says it alerts users when capacity is significantly reduced. If the watch displays “Battery Needs Service,” or you believe the battery needs replacement, contact Apple Support. Instructions for checking charge history and capacity are in Apple’s watchOS 26 battery health and usage guide.

Which fixes should you try?

| Low Power Mode | Open Control Center, tap the battery percentage, then select Low Power Mode. | It limits or turns off selected capabilities, including Always On, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications. When should you contact Apple Support?
Contact Apple Support if Battery Health reports “Battery Needs Service,” or if the battery concern persists and you believe the battery needs replacement. Settings changes can reduce some usage-related drain, but they do not repair degraded battery capacity.

Some Apple Watch generations can receive battery-capacity estimate recalibration after specified software updates. Recalibration may change the displayed estimate; it does not restore the battery’s physical capacity. Check Apple’s Apple Watch Battery and Performance information for model and software eligibility.
Keep Optimised Battery Charging and Optimised Charge Limit enabled as routine battery-care features. Apple says they help maintain battery lifespan; disabling the charge limit can increase wear.
