Consider a third-party pass creator only if it offers a specific feature you need and you can verify its current capabilities and privacy practices. Businesses issuing passes to customers have a different job; they may need a managed platform for distribution, updates, and integrations.
Which option fits your use case?
| Your need | Best place to start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Add your own loyalty or membership barcode | Apple Wallet’s native tools | Apple documents manual pass creation and an eligible-device option to create a pass from a barcode photo or screenshot. |
| Get a pass from a company or organization | The issuer’s official app, website, or email | Business-issued passes can be distributed and updated by the issuer; a personal pass creator is not a substitute for the issuer’s system. |
| Issue passes to many customers and keep them current | A managed business pass platform | Issuers may need bulk or API issuance, delivery options, integrations, and ongoing pass updates. |
| Use a consumer pass-creator app | Only after checking a particular app | Features, supported barcode types, privacy terms, and availability depend on the app; no current app-by-app comparison is established here. |
How to make a custom pass in Apple Wallet
Create a pass manually
Apple documents this workflow on iPhone: open Wallet, tap Add Card, choose Create a Pass, then Create Pass Manually. Select a template, enter the available details, and save the pass. Apple also documents editing a saved pass, including its fields and background or color options. See Apple’s iPhone guide to creating and editing passes.

Create a pass from a barcode photo or screenshot
Apple says Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later can create a Wallet pass from a photo or screenshot containing a barcode or QR code. Apple specifies an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later; supported languages and regions vary. These requirements apply to the photo-and-screenshot method, not to the separately documented manual workflow. Check Apple’s guide for current availability details.
After creating a pass from a card image, test that its barcode scans at the location where you plan to use it. Scanning depends on the barcode and the reader’s hardware; Apple’s developer guide advises issuers to test passes with their expected scanning equipment.

When a third-party pass creator makes sense
A third-party app may be useful if it demonstrably solves a problem the native tools do not—for example, a needed template or barcode format. Do not assume all pass apps support the same features. Before relying on one, check its current app listing and documentation for:
- Supported barcode types and whether the app can create the specific pass you need.
- What fields and appearance you can edit, and whether the pass can be changed later.
- Whether the pass stays current, who controls updates, and what happens if you stop using the app.
- Its privacy policy, data handling, and any provider terms that apply to the pass.
- Current device support and whether the app is available in your region.
A consumer pass creator and a business issuance platform are not interchangeable. A personal app helps one person create or store a pass; it does not by itself establish that a business can issue passes at scale or update customer records.

What businesses need to issue Wallet passes
For a business, the question is less “Which app makes a pass?” and more “How will we create, distribute, secure, and maintain passes for customers?” Apple’s developer path covers pass types, signing, distribution, updates, relevance by time or location, barcodes, and NFC. Apple says passes can be distributed through an app, email, or the web, and Wallet recognition requires an Apple-issued certificate associated with a developer account. See Apple’s Getting Started with Apple Wallet guide.

Compare the operating requirements
- Distribution: Decide whether customers will receive passes through your app, email, web, or a platform-provided link.
- Updates: Establish who owns the customer record and how changes to balances, membership details, or offers reach the pass.
- Scale and integrations: Check expected pass volume, API or CSV needs, and connections to CRM or point-of-sale systems.
- Wallet coverage: Confirm whether you need Apple Wallet alone or both Apple and Google Wallet.
- Privacy and procurement: Review provider data practices, identifiers, retention, security evidence, support, contract terms, and plan limits.
Privacy: who manages the pass matters
Apple’s Wallet privacy notice says necessary pass information may be sent to Apple and associated with an Apple Account; a pass provider may receive a unique device identifier for setup and management. Apple says it cannot see pass details created from a physical card, photo, or screenshot. For a provider-issued pass, review that provider’s privacy policy and terms as well as Apple’s notice: Apple Wallet & Privacy.
