Apple itself calls the device a spatial computer and describes its platform as spatial computing: apps and digital content appear in the wearer’s surroundings, from ordinary floating windows to fully immersive virtual environments.
What does Apple mean by spatial computing?
Apple Vision Pro runs visionOS, an operating system designed to place apps and digital content in the user’s physical space. Apple’s Vision Pro User Guide describes the device as blending digital content and apps into a person’s surroundings, with interaction through the eyes, hands, and voice.

That description covers a range of experiences rather than only a fully enclosed virtual world. An app might appear as a familiar window beside other apps, present a three-dimensional object in the room, or open a dedicated immersive space. Apple’s visionOS overview explains these building blocks as windows, volumes, and spaces.

In everyday conversation, people may call Vision Pro a VR headset because it can provide immersive virtual experiences. However, Apple’s preferred language for its product and software is “spatial computing,” not virtual reality. The distinction is about Apple’s terminology and how it frames the platform; it does not settle how the broader industry should classify the device.

Apple’s developer guidance is explicit: it asks developers to call Vision Pro software a “spatial computing app” and not describe the app experience as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), extended reality (XR), or mixed reality (MR). That instruction applies to descriptions of Vision Pro apps, rather than serving as a universal definition of those technology categories. See Apple’s App Store submission guidance.
How the experience ranges from windows to immersion
- Windows: Two-dimensional apps can sit in the room as floating interfaces, with the physical surroundings still part of the experience.
- Volumes: Three-dimensional objects and content can extend beyond a flat app window.
- Shared spaces: Apps can appear alongside one another in a common space.
- Full spaces: An app can open a more immersive environment, then let the wearer return to other apps or the room-aware interface.
This range is why “Apple VR” is a useful shorthand for some searches but an incomplete description of the platform. Vision Pro can present immersive virtual environments, yet spatial computing also includes digital interfaces that remain situated in the wearer’s physical space.

How people interact with Vision Pro
Apple describes navigation through eyes, hands, and voice. The wearer looks at an item, uses a hand gesture to select or manipulate it, and can use voice for supported actions. Apple’s June 2023 product announcement described a three-dimensional interface designed to respond to natural light and cast shadows, helping digital content appear integrated with the surrounding space. Those are Apple’s product descriptions, not independent measurements of how realistic the experience feels.
What Apple announced for visionOS 26
In its June 9, 2025 announcement, Apple said visionOS 26 would add spatial widgets that remain positioned in a user’s space and spatial scenes that add depth to photos. Apple also announced support for 180-degree, 360-degree, and wide-field-of-view video content from Insta360, GoPro, and Canon, as well as PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers. These are features from Apple’s announcement; access can depend on the app, content, region, and current platform availability.

For developers, Apple documents visionOS development using SwiftUI, RealityKit, and ARKit. The platform’s combination of windows, volumes, and spaces lets developers move between conventional interfaces, 3D content, and immersive experiences.

Apple’s announcement also identified ZEISS Optical Inserts as a vision-correction accessory. Anyone considering inserts should check the current model compatibility and availability for their circumstances.
In short: “Apple VR” or spatial computing?
Use “Apple virtual reality” when describing the broad idea or answering a search for Apple VR. For Apple’s own terminology, the more precise description is that Apple Vision Pro is a spatial computer running visionOS, where digital content can share the room with the user or fill a more immersive space.
