On Apple TV 4K, you can’t switch the default profile to another account with a setting or toggle. Apple’s documented method is to remove the profile marked Default and add a different Apple Account profile in its place. The default is the Apple Account that was used to set up the device.
How to replace the default profile on Apple TV 4K
- Open Settings on Apple TV 4K.
- Go to Profiles and Accounts.
- Select the name listed as Default.
- Select Remove Profile.
- Select Add Profile, then enter the Apple Account and password of the account you want to be the default.
This comes from Apple Support’s guide “Change the default profile on Apple TV 4K,” which states that you can change the default profile at any time. Apple doesn’t say that profile data, purchases or subscriptions carry over to the replacement account, so don’t assume they do.

What “can’t be edited” means here
The claim applies to the assignment of the default. Apple gives no in-place step that promotes another profile to default. It also doesn’t say that an account’s name can never be changed except by removing the profile. Those are separate questions, and the guides only address the first.

Why the default profile matters
Apple lists features that are available only to the default profile:

Apple notes that features and content may not be available in every region or on every Apple TV model. If you rely on none of these, changing the default may not be worth the effort. If you rely on one, make sure the account you add is the one whose photos, Home Screen or recommendations you want to see.
Apple’s description covers only these features. It doesn’t say the default label governs every app or every third-party service on the device.

Three kinds of profile, and which can be edited

The Apple TV app on other devices has its own profile management. Apple’s guide for it doesn’t establish that the Apple TV 4K default-profile steps apply the same way there, so check which one you mean before you start. Managed profiles come from Apple’s guide to adding, removing and deleting profiles on Apple TV 4K. The app guide is “Add and manage profiles in the Apple TV app on TVs and living room devices.”

Apple’s guidance on this point is narrow. According to Apple’s “Apple TV App & Privacy” page, when a managed profile is upgraded to an Apple Account, what that profile watched and the associated watch history transfer to the new Apple Account. Purchases, subscriptions and rentals stay with the managing profile.

That describes upgrading a managed profile. It isn’t a description of removing the default and adding another account. Apple’s default-profile instructions don’t spell out what happens to purchases, subscriptions or personalized content in that case. Note down what you depend on first, such as subscriptions and photo sync, and check it after the swap.
Switching profiles also refreshes watchlists, video collections and recommendations, according to Apple’s Apple TV app sidebar guide. After a change, expect the app to look different.

If the Remove option seems blocked
Some users report that a device won’t let them remove a profile because it is the default user. That’s only anecdotal. The Apple procedure gets around the problem by starting with the default profile itself: select the entry labelled Default and remove that one, rather than trying to delete other profiles first. Then add the replacement.
