Its central appeal is the pair’s chemistry; early reviews are divided over whether a thin, uneven story gives that chemistry enough to carry a full season. Production paused after an original showrunner left mid-shoot, but available reporting does not establish that the handoff caused the weaknesses critics describe.
What is Apple TV’s Brothers about?
Apple describes Brothers as a scripted comedy in which McConaughey and Harrelson play fictionalized versions of themselves. When Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he brings his family to Matthew’s Austin ranch. Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (Holland Taylor), lets slip that the longtime friends might be brothers. Woody pursues the possibility while Matthew weighs a run for governor of Texas. Apple’s series announcement presents the family mystery as the story’s hook, not a claim about the actors’ real-world relationship.

The show is a star vehicle in a literal sense: the fictional premise invites viewers to enjoy the leads’ familiar public personas while watching them play comic versions of themselves. Its success therefore depends on more than whether the brotherhood mystery is solved; it also depends on whether the pair’s rapport and the comedy around them remain engaging across the season.

Why did the show change showrunners during production?
The production change happened after filming was already underway. TheWrap reported on June 20, 2025 that filming in Austin had paused after original writer and showrunner David West Read left over creative differences about how to end the season. Eight of the then-ordered ten episodes had been filmed, and a return date had not been set at the time of that report. TheWrap said Lee Eisenberg was in talks to replace him.
By June 2026, Variety reported that Eisenberg had replaced Read. Apple’s release credits Eisenberg as showrunner and executive producer, and lists Read among the executive producers. The released season has eight episodes. The available reports do not explain why the order changed from ten to eight, and they do not connect the showrunner handoff to the story or comedy issues critics later identified.

What are critics saying about Brothers?
The early critical response is mixed, with praise for the leads’ chemistry and reservations about the writing and the story’s ability to sustain the premise. Critics do not agree on whether the series works best as an easygoing hangout comedy or feels too slight to support eight episodes.
The main strength: the pairing
Reviews recognize the appeal of watching McConaughey and Harrelson together, especially as playful, heightened versions of themselves. That dynamic gives the show its most consistent source of energy. Some reactions have described it as an amiable hangout, where the stars’ presence and rapport are part of the point.
The main reservation: a thin story
Other critics argue that the writing and plot do not make enough of the brotherhood mystery. Nick Schager of The Daily Beast called it a “frustratingly thin affair,” while Kelly Woo of Tom’s Guide rated it 3/5, praising the leads’ chemistry but finding the story too slight to sustain eight episodes. On Rotten Tomatoes, the cited examples also point in different directions: IGN gave the series 5/10, while Common Sense Media rated it 4/5 and enjoyed its fact-versus-fiction hook. Rotten Tomatoes’ review page collects changing critic reviews, so its current mix may differ.
How to interpret the aggregate score
A MacDailyNews roundup published October 1, 2026 reported a Rotten Tomatoes score of about 62% from 39 reviews at that moment. That is a dated snapshot, not a fixed season verdict: both the score and review count can change as more reviews are added. The roundup also quoted The Hollywood Reporter critic Daniel Fienberg describing the show as “good for a couple of chuckles, little more.” That line reflects one critic’s view, not a universal response.
Rank #4
There is not enough audience polling or viewership data in the cited material to draw a broader conclusion about how viewers are responding. The clearest distinction in the reviews is between those who find the stars’ chemistry and loose hangout tone enjoyable and those who want a more substantial story or more consistent comedy.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
Brothers is a better fit for viewers who are curious about McConaughey and Harrelson’s on-screen dynamic and are comfortable with a comedy that leans on star personas. Viewers looking for a tightly plotted mystery or a consistently dense run of jokes may be less persuaded by the premise. The early reviews suggest that the central question is not whether the leads have chemistry, but whether that chemistry is enough for each viewer to spend eight episodes with the story.
Where can you watch it?
Apple lists Brothers as an Apple TV series. Its TV app is available on Apple TV 4K and other supported screens, but a dedicated Apple TV 4K device is not required to watch; check Apple’s series page for the official details and supported-device information.
