Three Apple TV settings can help match a video’s picture format, make dialogue stand out, or show subtitles automatically. Find them in Video and Audio settings or during playback; availability depends on your Apple TV model, display, content, region, and audio setup.
Match the picture to the content
On Apple TV 4K, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content. Turn on Match Dynamic Range to have Apple TV match its output to the original dynamic range of the video. Turn on Match Frame Rate to match the refresh rate to the source frame rate where supported.

These options can preserve characteristics of the source rather than forcing every video into one output format. Apple says Apple TV attempts to determine which formats your display supports. Its guidance covers content encoded at 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 frames per second, with some regional refresh-rate differences and cases where the frame rate is doubled. When Apple TV switches formats, the screen may briefly go blank or flicker. Apple Support’s article, published March 18, 2025, says: “You may experience a blank screen or flickering as your television switches between formats.” That brief interruption is a format transition, not necessarily a fault.

If the picture does not return
If you are trying an unverified format, follow Apple’s instructions to test it under Match Content before relying on it. For other output adjustments, such as Format, HDMI Output, or Chroma, check the settings and compatibility guidance for your connected display and any receiver. Apple says YCbCr is preferred for most TVs; RGB output should match the television’s settings. 4:4:4 chroma can improve clarity but requires a high-speed HDMI cable, while 4:2:0 is described as compatible with most TVs and HDMI cables. These are configuration-specific requirements, not a reason for every owner to replace a cable. Check your TV or receiver specifications and Apple’s video settings guide.
Make dialogue clearer or reduce loud peaks
While a video is playing, open the playback controls and choose Audio Options to see available audio settings. Apple TV may offer Enhance Dialogue levels such as Enhance and Enhance More, as well as Reduce Loud Sounds. The options depend on the video, your speakers or headphones, and your Apple TV model. - Enhance More makes dialogue very prominent, but may alter the original mix.
- Reduce Loud Sounds reduces dynamic range so loud music and effects are less loud relative to other sounds.
Choose the least intensive option that helps in your listening setup. Some audio defaults can also be adjusted under Settings > Video and Audio.

Show subtitles automatically in common situations
On Apple TV 4K, open subtitle settings to configure Show for Different Languages, Subtitle Language, Show When Muted, and Show on Skip Back. The last two can display subtitles automatically when playback is muted or briefly after you skip back. The exact menu availability can vary by model and region; Apple lists these options in its subtitle settings guide.

These preferences only display subtitles or captions that the video provides; they cannot create them for a video without caption tracks. Apple also notes that Show When Muted is not supported when TV volume is controlled by an infrared remote.

If the main goal is easier viewing or listening rather than changing output behavior, check Settings > Accessibility. Apple lists options including VoiceOver, Zoom, text display, light and contrast adjustments, Reduce Motion, audio descriptions, caption settings, and dialogue isolation.
