Apple TV app profiles give household members separate watch histories, watchlists, and personalized recommendations. On Apple TV 4K, the active profile’s Use Play History setting also determines whether its viewing informs recommendations and Continue Watching. Apple TV+ is a service within the Apple TV app; profiles are an app feature, and the available controls vary by device and region.
How do profiles work on Apple TV+?
Profiles belong to the Apple TV app, including when you use it to watch Apple TV+. Each profile keeps its own watch history, watchlist, and personalized recommendations. On Apple TV 4K, choosing a profile refreshes the app’s profile-specific watchlist, video collections, and recommendations.

Apple uses labels such as Continue Watching, watchlist, and video collections. The queue may be labeled differently on another device; “Up Next” is not guaranteed to appear everywhere. Apple also cautions that features can vary by device and region.

Apple Account or managed profile: which should you use?
| Profile type | How it works | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Account profile | The viewer signs in with an Apple Account. | A household member who has an Apple Account and wants an individual profile. |
| Managed profile | An Apple Account profile creates and manages it for a household member who does not have an Apple Account. | Household members who need a profile without signing in, including children when restrictions are configured. |
On Apple TV 4K, an Apple Account profile can create up to five managed profiles. A manager can set recommended or custom restrictions; a child profile then presents age-appropriate content and search results according to those settings. The managing profile can access managed profiles’ playback and search data, as well as modify, delete, or upgrade them. Deleting one removes its history and other profile data, and removes it from Apple TV app devices signed in with the managing profile. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K profile instructions.

How to add or switch profiles
The path depends on the device. Apple documents these profile controls on Apple TV 4K and on supported TVs and living-room devices; they are not necessarily available in the same place on every platform.
- Apple TV 4K: Add a profile from Settings > Profiles and Accounts, Control Center, or the Apple TV app sidebar.
- Supported TVs and living-room devices: Add profiles from the Apple TV app sidebar or Settings > Profiles.
After profiles have been set up, select the person’s profile in the app to use their viewing surfaces. For device-specific steps, see Apple’s guides for Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV app on supported TVs and living-room devices.

Does Apple TV have separate watch histories?
Yes. Apple says each profile has its own watch history, and that what a viewer watches informs personalized recommendations. On Apple TV 4K, Use Play History controls whether the Apple TV app uses the active profile’s history for recommendations and Continue Watching. With the setting on, that history can inform both; with it off, the app does not use the history for those purposes. Apple documents this control in Apple TV app settings for Apple TV 4K.
One shared option is For All of You: Apple TV 4K can use the individual taste and viewing history of selected profiles to find something for everyone. This is distinct from each profile’s own recommendations. The setting and its availability may differ on other devices.

How do I stop one person’s shows appearing in Up Next?
Switch to the profile that person should use before watching. Separate profiles keep their own viewing data, so using the correct profile helps keep its Continue Watching or equivalent queue and recommendations distinct. If the shared television has been left on someone else’s profile, switch profiles rather than relying on the queue label, which can vary by device.
On Apple TV 4K, check Use Play History in the Apple TV app settings for that profile. Turning it off stops the app from using that profile’s play history for recommendations and Continue Watching. Apple’s documentation establishes this effect for the Apple TV app; it does not say this changes viewing records held by third-party services.

Can I clear my Apple TV watch history?
On Apple TV 4K, use the Apple TV app’s Clear Play History control for the current profile. Apple says clearing history removes that profile’s watched shows and movies from its Continue Watching row across devices. It does not establish that clearing the app history removes subscriptions, purchases, or records held by third-party services. Menu names and control availability can differ outside Apple TV 4K; consult the settings for the device you use.
How do I lock an Apple TV profile with a passcode?
On supported Apple TV app devices, a profile can require a four-digit code when someone switches to it. Apple says this prevents others from accessing that profile’s watch history, recommendations, and watchlist. Follow the profile settings on your device because the path and availability vary. A profile code is separate from content restrictions: use restrictions to control what content a managed or child profile can access, rather than treating the code as a content filter. Apple describes profile access and restrictions in its Apple TV 4K profile guide and Apple TV app guide for supported TVs and living-room devices.
Quick Recap
What to check when profiles or queues behave differently
- The wrong queue or recommendations appear: Check which profile is active before playing a show.
- Viewing is not shaping recommendations or Continue Watching on Apple TV 4K: Check whether Use Play History is on for that profile.
- A watched title remains in a queue: Apple documents clearing play history as removing watched titles from that profile’s Continue Watching across devices. Do not assume the same labels or controls exist on every platform.
- A control or menu is missing: Profile features differ by device and region. Apple’s guides cover Apple TV 4K and supported Apple TV app devices, not a guarantee of identical settings everywhere.
- A child can reach unsuitable content: Review the managed or child profile’s content restrictions; a four-digit profile code only limits access to the profile itself.
