If a movie won’t play in the Apple TV app, first check whether Apple or the content provider has an outage. Then confirm your Apple Account, test the same title on another device using the same connection, and update and restart the device that is failing. If the movie plays but is missing from your list, check your Library, Family Sharing, and whether the title requires a separate subscription, rental, or purchase.
Start with the checks that isolate the problem
- Check for an outage. Look at Apple’s troubleshooting guidance and Apple System Status. If the movie comes from a third-party provider, check that provider’s service status too. If a service is interrupted, wait and try again.
- Confirm your Apple Account works. If you can’t sign in, resolve the password or two-factor authentication issue first. A sign-in problem can look like a playback or library problem.
- Test the connection. If you’re using a weak cellular connection, switch to Wi-Fi. Apple’s support article, accessed in 2026, says HD streaming requires 8 Mbit/s or faster. It also recommends checking that the Wi-Fi router supports 802.11a/g/n/ac. These are Apple’s guidance, not a guarantee that a connection at that speed will always stream smoothly.
- Try the same movie on another device using the same network. If it fails there too, Apple advises contacting your internet service provider. If it works on the other device, focus on the app or device that is having trouble.
- Check simultaneous viewing. If other people are watching an Apple TV subscription or Apple TV channels, make sure the applicable multi-device streaming limit has not been exceeded.
Fix buffering, interruptions, or poor video quality
Reduce network activity
Other people streaming, downloading, or using the internet can slow a connection. Temporarily pause other internet activity and retry the movie. Apple’s streaming troubleshooting steps also suggest trying a download when the option is available.

Restart and update the device
Restart the device running the Apple TV app, then check for available updates for the app or its host device. A restart is different from resetting the app: it does not erase the app’s accounts and settings.

Run Video Troubleshooting on supported living-room devices
On supported smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, and cable or satellite services, open the Apple TV app sidebar, choose Settings, select Video Troubleshooting, choose Start, and follow the prompts. Apple says this diagnostic tests the network connection and can help with video issues. Availability depends on the device and region. See Apple’s Video Troubleshooting instructions.

Consider router compatibility only if the tests point to it
Apple recommends checking whether a Wi-Fi router supports 802.11a/g/n/ac. That check does not mean you need to replace your router: first compare playback on another device on the same connection and, if available, run the in-app diagnostic. Consider a compatible router only if those checks indicate a router or connection issue, and verify the network requirements of your devices before buying one.
Find a movie that appears to be missing
Check your Library and family purchases
In the Apple TV app, open Library and browse Movies or the relevant category. Purchases and rentals are organized there. If Family Sharing is set up, select Family Sharing and then the family member whose collection you want to view. Apple’s Library guide explains where to find those items.

Confirm how the title is available
An Apple TV subscription does not automatically include third-party-branded subscription services or titles offered for rental or purchase in the app. A movie can therefore be absent or unavailable until you access the relevant service or rent or buy it. Some devices don’t support transactions directly; you may still be able to watch a title acquired on another device signed in to the same Apple Account. Check Apple’s guidance on managing your library.

Know what your living-room device can do
Apple says TVs and other living-room devices can watch and share family purchases, but the Apple TV app on those devices cannot download, import, or hide purchases in the Library. Offline downloads are available on supported computer and mobile device platforms.

Reset the app only after simpler fixes fail
Resetting is more disruptive than restarting. Apple says it restores the app’s original settings and erases app data, including accounts and configuration; on a smart TV, personal information, shows, and movies are removed from the app. Try the outage, account, network, update, and restart checks first. If you still need to reset, follow Apple’s Reset the Apple TV app instructions for your device.
