Apple TV 4K and Roku Ultra both cover the core streaming essentials: 4K video, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Wi-Fi 6 and Dolby Atmos-related support. The better fit depends on the details around those features: Apple’s Gigabit Ethernet option and Siri Remote, or Roku’s included HDMI cable, backlit hands-free remote, headphone mode and USB playback.
Choose based on your TV and audio setup, whether you need wired networking, and which remote features you will actually use. Neither device has a proven overall speed or picture-quality advantage over the other in the available manufacturer specifications.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Apple TV 4K if the Apple setup fits your needs
- You want Apple’s listed video format support, including Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, alongside HDMI 2.1.
- You prefer the Siri Remote and its USB-C charging.
- You want a wired connection at Gigabit Ethernet speeds. Select the Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration; the Ethernet port is not listed for every Apple TV 4K configuration.
- You already have a compatible HDMI cable. Apple sells the cable separately, so factor one in if you need to buy it.
Choose Roku Ultra if the bundled extras matter more
- You value a remote with backlit buttons, hands-free voice control, a rechargeable battery and a lost remote finder.
- You want Bluetooth Headphone Mode or USB local playback.
- You want an HDMI cable included in the box.
- You want AirPlay 2 or HomeKit on a supported Roku model and software version; see the compatibility details below.
What the video and audio specifications mean in practice
The headline HDR formats overlap: both manufacturers list Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HDR10, and both list HLG. Apple specifies Dolby Vision Profile 5 and lists output up to 2160p at 60 frames per second. Roku lists Dolby Vision at 60 fps. These specifications do not establish that one box produces a better-looking picture; the display, HDMI input, settings and content determine what you can watch.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Both products list Dolby Atmos-related capability, but compatible audio equipment is required to hear Atmos. Apple lists Dolby Atmos along with AC-3 5.1 and E-AC-3 7.1. Roku lists Dolby Atmos decoding via HDMI and DTS pass-through. Those format lists are not a neutral comparison of sound quality.
Networking, ports and what comes in the box
Both devices list Wi-Fi 6. If you plan to connect by Ethernet, the specification difference is clearer: Apple’s Wi-Fi + Ethernet model has Gigabit Ethernet, while Roku Ultra lists 10/100 Base-T Ethernet. That is a difference in port rating, not evidence that one device will stream faster in every home; actual results also depend on the network and service.

Remote and playback extras
Roku documents more convenience features for its included Voice Remote Pro (2nd edition): backlit buttons, a rechargeable battery, hands-free voice control and a finder for a misplaced remote. Roku Ultra also offers Bluetooth Headphone Mode and USB 3.0 local playback.

Apple includes a Siri Remote with USB-C charging. Apple describes its battery life as lasting months with typical daily use. Which remote is preferable is a matter of household habits; the listed features do not establish a universal winner.
Does Roku Ultra support AirPlay and HomeKit?
Yes, with a model and software qualification. Roku Support lists Ultra model 4850 as compatible with AirPlay 2 and HomeKit when it runs Roku OS 9.4 or later. Its product page identifies the current Ultra listing as model 4850R, while the support article refers to model 4850. Check the model number and software on the device you are buying; Ultra LT model 4801 is a distinct product, not the same model. Roku’s support page was last updated June 23, 2026. Check your TV and connections before buying
For either device
- Confirm that the TV has an HDMI input compatible with the desired formats. Roku states that 4K streaming requires an HDMI input supporting HDCP 2.2.
- For Dolby Vision or other HDR playback, the TV and the specific HDMI input must support the format. Some TVs offer HDR only on selected inputs, or require HDR to be enabled in the TV’s settings.
- For Atmos, confirm that the connected speakers or receiver support it.
Apple TV 4K HDR checks
Apple says automatic HDR selection requires the TV to support the chosen HDR format at 60 Hz, or 50 Hz in Europe. At 30 Hz, or 25 Hz in Europe, HDR may be possible with Match Dynamic Range enabled. Apple recommends an HDMI cable compatible with the selected 4K HDR formats and provides a two-minute HDMI connection check in settings. See Apple’s guide to 4K, HDR, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision on Apple TV 4K.

There is no neutral head-to-head speed benchmark established here. Roku says Ultra is 30% faster than other Roku players, but that is Roku’s own comparison within its product line, not a comparison with Apple TV 4K. It does not establish which box launches apps or responds to commands faster in a cross-brand test.

- Check whether you need to purchase a compatible HDMI cable for Apple TV 4K.
- Choose based on the remote and playback features you will use, not an unverified claim of cross-brand speed, picture quality or value.
