If HDR or a 4K format is greyed out on Apple TV 4K, first confirm that your TV supports the exact format and refresh rate you want. Then check the TV’s HDMI input and enhanced-video setting, the cables and any receiver or switch in the signal path, and finally Apple TV’s video settings. A missing option does not automatically mean the Apple TV or cable is faulty.
Why an HDR or 4K option may be unavailable
Apple TV 4K offers formats according to the capabilities it detects in the connected display and HDMI setup. The available choices can also depend on the Apple TV model, aspect ratio, selected format, and settings. Apple’s format guidance says a TV must support HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision at 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe) for Apple TV 4K to automatically set that HDR format. With Match Dynamic Range enabled, Apple TV 4K can display those formats at 30 Hz (25 Hz in Europe).

Not every Apple TV 4K supports every format: Apple says HDR10+ is supported only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation). Check the model and the TV’s manual or manufacturer support page before troubleshooting the cable. The manual is the authority for which formats and refresh rates the TV supports.
Check the TV’s HDMI input and video setting
Some TVs support 4K or HDR only through selected HDMI inputs. The port may also require a setting that enables its higher-bandwidth video features. Depending on the TV, that setting may be called Enhanced, Ultra, Deep Color, or something similar—not necessarily “HDR.” Names and menu paths vary by manufacturer and model.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
- Use the TV manual or manufacturer support page to identify an HDMI input that supports the desired 4K/HDR format and refresh rate.
- Connect Apple TV to that input.
- In the TV’s settings, enable the applicable enhanced HDMI, color, or video mode for that input.
- Return to Apple TV’s format choices and check whether the desired option is now available.
Test the HDMI cable and connection
Apple TV 4K includes a connection diagnostic at Settings > Video and Audio > Check HDMI Connection. Apple describes it as a two-minute test when Apple TV is connected to a 4K-compatible TV. Run it, then reseat both ends of the HDMI cable and check that every cable in the signal path supports the format you are trying to use.
Apple says 4K HDR requires a cable compatible with those formats and recommends looking for cables marked Compatible Dolby Vision; its support page gives the Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as an example. A replacement cable is worth considering only after checking the existing setup. Match the cable’s stated compatibility to the intended format, but do not expect a cable to add HDR capability to an unsupported TV or input.

Isolate receivers, sound bars, switches, and splitters
Any device between Apple TV and the television can affect HDMI format negotiation. To isolate the cause, temporarily connect Apple TV directly to the TV. Remove HDMI switches and splitters during this test as well.
Recommended Free Tools
- If the format becomes available: check whether the receiver or sound bar supports the desired 4K/HDR format on the HDMI ports you are using. Review its firmware and enhanced HDMI settings, and verify every cable in the chain.
- If the format is still unavailable: keep following the TV-input and Apple TV-setting checks; the direct connection has not established that an accessory is the cause.
Apple’s Apple TV 4K format guidance also warns that switches and splitters can interfere with HDMI. Reconnect intermediary devices one at a time after the direct test so you can identify which part changes the result.

Review Apple TV format and matching settings
Open Settings > Video and Audio on Apple TV. Review Format and Match Content. Apple TV automatically selects the best format supported by the TV, while manual choices vary with the device, display, aspect ratio, and selected format. Match Dynamic Range can preserve the dynamic range of the content rather than forcing all video into one range.
If a setting change has left the picture or available formats in an unexpected state, select Reset Video Settings to return to settings compatible with the TV. Apple documents these controls in its Apple TV video settings guide. Change one setting at a time and check the result before changing another.

If the picture is black or unstable
When the issue includes a black screen or an unstable picture—not just a greyed-out option—reseat or replace the HDMI cable and try another TV HDMI port. Confirm in the TV manual that the port supports the target format. Apple includes these steps in its HDMI troubleshooting guidance. After moving ports, recheck any port-specific enhanced-video setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical order for narrowing it down
- Identify the Apple TV model and the target HDR format and refresh rate.
- Confirm that the TV supports that combination.
- Use a TV input documented for 4K/HDR and enable its enhanced video mode if required.
- Run Settings > Video and Audio > Check HDMI Connection; reseat the cable and verify each cable’s format compatibility.
- Test Apple TV directly on the TV, without a receiver, sound bar, switch, or splitter.
- Review Settings > Video and Audio, including Format and Match Content; use Reset Video Settings if needed.
This sequence separates a display limitation from an input setting, a signal-path problem, or an Apple TV configuration issue. Apple’s setup guidance also covers the cable and display requirements for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD.
