Apple TV 4K supports Dolby Atmos, but the connection route depends on your audio system. For an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver, connect Apple TV 4K directly to the sound system’s HDMI input; Apple says its high-bandwidth Atmos signal does not work over ARC. For HomePod or HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) can return TV audio over ARC or eARC. A HomePod stereo pair supports Dolby Atmos; HomePod mini does not support Dolby surround formats.
Does Apple TV 4K support Dolby Atmos?
Yes. Apple lists Dolby Atmos among Apple TV 4K’s supported audio formats, alongside Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1. The format support does not guarantee that every title, app, television or connected speaker will deliver Atmos: the content and the entire signal path must support it.

Apple’s soundbar and AV receiver setup instructions, published March 18, 2025, describe Apple TV 4K’s Atmos as a high-bandwidth format that does not work over ARC. Apple’s technical specifications list Atmos support and state that an HDMI cable is required and sold separately.
What speakers work with Apple TV 4K Dolby Atmos?
The two documented choices are an Atmos-capable soundbar or AV receiver connected over HDMI, or a HomePod stereo pair configured as Apple TV’s default audio output. HomePod mini can be selected as an audio output, including for TV audio returned over ARC/eARC on supported Apple TV models, but it does not provide Dolby Atmos surround playback.

| Audio system | Apple-documented connection | Atmos support and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Atmos soundbar or AV receiver | Apple TV 4K HDMI output to the sound system’s HDMI input; sound system HDMI output to the TV | The sound system must support Dolby Atmos. If video passes through it, check support for the video formats you use, such as HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Apple says its high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC. |
| HomePod stereo pair | Set the pair as Apple TV 4K’s default audio output | Apple says a HomePod stereo pair supports Dolby Atmos. For optimal surround sound, Apple recommends positioning the speakers on opposite sides of the TV, about 4 feet apart. |
| HomePod or HomePod mini for TV audio | Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) connected to an ARC/eARC-capable TV; return the TV’s audio to HomePod | The TV must support ARC or eARC. HomePod mini does not support Dolby surround formats and renders those formats in mono or stereo. |
Apple’s Apple TV User Guide documents the HomePod format distinction and eARC support. The official sources do not provide a universal list of compatible third-party TV, soundbar or receiver models, so check the specifications for your exact equipment and the connection you plan to use.
Can Apple TV 4K pass Dolby Atmos through my TV?
Do not assume that a TV’s ARC port will pass Apple TV 4K Atmos to a soundbar or receiver. Apple says most TVs do not support Dolby Atmos pass-through to those devices, and its high-bandwidth Apple TV Atmos does not work over ARC. For a wired Atmos sound system, Apple’s recommended path avoids the TV as the audio pass-through: connect Apple TV to the soundbar or receiver, then connect that device to the TV.

If the sound system cannot pass through a video format you want, Apple describes connecting Apple TV to the TV for video instead. That alternative only works for Atmos if your particular TV and audio hardware provide a compatible audio route; verify their specifications rather than relying on the presence of an ARC or eARC port alone.

Do I need eARC for Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K?
For Apple TV 4K connected directly to an Atmos soundbar or receiver, ARC/eARC is not the recommended Atmos path. For returning TV audio to HomePod, ARC or eARC is the separate supported feature: Apple requires Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), an ARC/eARC-capable TV, and HomePod or HomePod mini. Apple’s ARC/eARC instructions, published May 25, 2026, describe this setup.

Apple specifies an eARC-compatible HDMI cable in its eARC instructions. A cable cannot add ARC/eARC, Atmos pass-through or format support to a TV or sound system that lacks it.
Set up Atmos with a soundbar or receiver
- Connect Apple TV 4K’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the Atmos-capable soundbar or AV receiver.
- Connect the sound system’s HDMI output to the TV. Check that the sound system passes through the video formats you want, including HDR10 or Dolby Vision where applicable.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. Check whether Dolby Atmos appears under Immersive Audio.
- Choose supported content and look for the Dolby Atmos icon in its on-screen information. Apple also says Quick Start must be enabled: Settings > Apps > iTunes Films and TV Shows > Quick Start.
If Dolby Atmos is missing from Immersive Audio, Apple says the home entertainment setup may need to change. Recheck the HDMI connections, the audio system’s Atmos capability and the video pass-through path; also confirm that the selected content offers Atmos.

Set up TV audio on HomePod over ARC or eARC
- Connect Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) to a TV that supports ARC or eARC. Use an eARC-compatible HDMI cable for an eARC connection.
- On Apple TV, choose the HomePod room as the default audio output.
- Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output > Audio Return Channel, then select Play Television Audio.
- If TV audio does not return to HomePod, check that ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC are enabled in the TV settings. Follow the TV maker’s instructions because setting names and menus vary.
These steps route television audio to HomePod; they are not the same as connecting a soundbar or receiver to receive Apple TV’s high-bandwidth Atmos over ARC.

Quick Recap
HomePod placement for TV sound
- One HomePod: Apple recommends placing it near the TV’s center and within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall.
- HomePod stereo pair: Put one speaker on each side of the TV, about 4 feet apart for optimal surround sound, according to Apple.
How to check compatibility before connecting
- Identify the Apple TV generation if you plan to use ARC/eARC with HomePod; that route requires 2nd generation or later.
- Check whether your soundbar or receiver supports Dolby Atmos and which video formats it can pass through.
- Check the TV’s exact specifications for ARC/eARC and audio pass-through support. ARC/eARC support by itself does not establish that the TV will pass Apple TV Atmos to an external sound system.
- Confirm that the specific movie, show or app provides Dolby Atmos audio.
- Use the correct HDMI connections and an eARC-compatible cable where Apple’s eARC setup requires one.
