Apple Text Messages Explained: iMessage, RCS, SMS, and Green Bubbles

Apple’s Messages app can send with iMessage, RCS, SMS, or MMS. Blue means iMessage; green means a carrier service, but not which one.

Apple text messages are sent through the Messages app using one of four services: iMessage, RCS, SMS, or MMS. Blue bubbles identify iMessage; green bubbles identify RCS, SMS, or MMS. A green bubble alone does not reveal which of those three services carried the message.

What does “Apple text message” mean?

It usually means a message sent or received in Apple’s Messages app. The app can use Apple’s iMessage service or carrier-provided RCS, SMS, and MMS, depending on the recipient, settings, network, iOS version, and carrier support. Apple describes iMessage as a secure messaging service available in Messages on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro.

What do blue and green bubbles mean?

  • Blue: The message was sent with iMessage.
  • Green: The message was sent with RCS, SMS, or MMS. The color does not distinguish among those services.

Green does not automatically mean a message failed. It means that particular message used a carrier messaging service rather than iMessage. Apple lists several reasons this can happen: the recipient does not use an Apple device, iMessage is off on either device, iMessage is temporarily unavailable, or settings need attention after setting up a new device.

How iMessage, RCS, SMS, and MMS differ

Service How it is carried Bubble color Features and security
iMessage Wi-Fi or cellular data through Apple’s service Blue End-to-end encrypted; supports delivery and read receipts and typing indicators.
RCS Carrier-provided service Green Supports richer messaging features. End-to-end encryption depends on support from the providers for all participants.
SMS/MMS Carrier-provided services Green Not end-to-end encrypted, according to Apple.

These distinctions matter most when you are checking privacy or expecting features such as typing indicators. Apple’s comparison of iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS explains that iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted, while SMS/MMS are not. RCS may support end-to-end encryption only when the providers for everyone in the conversation support it.

When can an iPhone use RCS?

Apple says RCS on iPhone requires iOS 18 and a text-messaging plan with a carrier that supports RCS. Availability varies by carrier and region, so the requirements do not guarantee that RCS is available with every provider or in every location. Activation may take a few hours. For setup information, see Apple’s Messages setup guide.

What to check when a message turns green

  1. Check the recipient: Messages to someone without an Apple device use a carrier service rather than iMessage.
  2. Check iMessage settings on both sides: If either device has iMessage turned off, the message may be green.
  3. Consider a temporary outage: iMessage may be unavailable at the time you send the message.
  4. Review setup after a device change: If you recently set up a new device, check that Messages is configured correctly.
  5. Check RCS support if relevant: RCS requires iOS 18 and support from the carrier; local availability and activation can vary.

These checks identify why a message may not use iMessage; the green color by itself cannot tell you whether it used RCS, SMS, or MMS.
