Apple has not announced a release date or explained which macOS versions will get the change.
What Apple announced
Apple says Full Disk Access is an exception to macOS’s ordinary privacy protections, maintained in part so backup apps can work. The company plans additional controls to make sure users understand when they grant an app this unusually broad permission. Apple has not described the new consent screen or said how it will handle permissions already granted.

Apple’s stated rationale specifically includes AI agents. It said: “As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially.” That is Apple’s qualitative explanation; the company did not publish a risk statistic or identify a particular incident as the reason for the change. Why Full Disk Access deserves attention
Apple warns that an app with Full Disk Access may be able to expose files, mail, messages, and browsing history. For communication apps, access can implicate other people’s privacy as well. This describes the potential scope of the permission, not proof that every app requesting it misuses data.

The permission’s breadth is why the app’s purpose matters. A backup app may need access to perform its job; for another app, ask what feature requires it and whether narrower, file-by-file access would be enough. Also consider whether the app clearly explains how it handles data. These are checks for evaluating a request, not findings about any particular app.
How to review Full Disk Access now
Apple’s current guidance says that apps requiring full storage-device access must be explicitly added in macOS 10.13 or later. For macOS 13 and later, use this path:

- Open System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security, then Privacy.
- Review the apps listed for Full Disk Access and consider whether each still needs the permission for its intended function.
Settings can differ by macOS version. Apple’s instructions are available in its guide to controlling app access to files. A request alone does not establish that an app is unsafe; assess the access against what you use the app to do.
What is—and is not—known about the rollout
Apple has announced additional controls but has not provided an implementation date, named the affected macOS releases, described the exact consent flow, or said whether existing grants will change. Until Apple publishes those details, users should not assume the new controls are already active or that current permissions will be revoked.

Reports cited around the announcement
TechCrunch reported that Apple’s announcement came days after a journalist claimed Meta’s Muse app knew the contents of private messages; Meta disputed the claim. The outlet also cited a Wired report about a flaw in ChatGPT’s Mac app that could have enabled access to sensitive data. These are attributed reports, not confirmation that the claims were established, and Apple did not say either prompted its announcement. TechCrunch’s report
