Apple says it will add controls to make granting Full Disk Access (FDA) on macOS require “very explicit user action.” The company links the change to the risks of increasingly capable AI agents, but it has not announced a ban on agents, a rollout date, or what the new controls will look like. As of October 3, 2026, the announcement is about consent for one powerful Mac permission—not a general restriction on running AI locally.
What Apple announced about Full Disk Access
In an October 2, 2026 statement, Apple said Full Disk Access “largely sidesteps” macOS privacy controls, a level of access intended to support backup apps. Apple says some developers use it in ways that can expose files, mail, messages, and browsing history without users’ full knowledge. It also warns that access by communication apps can affect the privacy of the people a user communicates with.

Apple’s stated plan is to introduce additional controls so that users who choose to grant this access must take “very explicit user action.” The company has not described the interface or other mechanism, named an affected-app list, or said which macOS update will include the change. A contemporaneous MacRumors report also noted that Apple had not provided a timing.
Is Apple blocking AI agents on Mac?
No. Apple announced stronger controls around Full Disk Access, not a ban on agentic AI, local models, or running agents on a Mac. Apple said the risk from this level of access will grow as AI agents become more capable and autonomous. That is the company’s rationale; the announcement did not provide an incident count or quantify agent-related privacy harm.

Apple’s separate WWDC26 session on local AI describes how developers can run agentic workflows on Apple silicon. It presents a four-layer stack: MLX, MLX-LM, MLX-LM Server, and an agent that connects to the local server. Apple names Xcode, OpenCode, Pi agent, Ollama, LM Studio, and vLLM as examples in the ecosystem. The walkthrough sets up MLX-LM, starts a local server, and directs an agent to it.
This demonstrates that local agent workflows remain part of Apple’s developer story. It does not show that every agent needs Full Disk Access—or that every agent avoids it. Whether a particular app requests FDA depends on that app and what it does; Apple’s announcement concerns how users consent to the permission.

What Full Disk Access could expose
FDA is unusually broad access to data protected by macOS privacy controls. Apple’s stated examples include files, mail, messages, and browsing history. The concern can extend beyond the Mac user: if a communication app has this access, its reach may include other people’s communications with that user.
An AI agent’s ability to use tools also raises risks beyond reading files. In a separate WWDC26 security session, Apple describes indirect prompt injection: instructions hidden in added context or tool results can try to redirect an agent. Apple’s example involves a calendar entry that attempts to cause sensitive data to be deleted. The session notes that tool actions can have side effects such as sending a message to the wrong person, spending money, controlling devices, exfiltrating data, or deleting information.

Apple recommends that developers seek user confirmation for actions with meaningful side effects and require authentication for sensitive actions. Those are design recommendations from the security session, not a description of the forthcoming FDA controls.
Does running an agent locally keep everything on your Mac?
No. A model can perform inference locally while an agent’s tools still use the network. Apple’s local-AI demonstration, for example, shows networked Git commands reaching remote services. “Local AI” describes where the model runs; it does not by itself establish where every file, tool request, or other piece of data goes.

When evaluating an agent, consider the whole workflow rather than only the model’s location:
- Data access: Which files, accounts, or macOS-protected data can the app read?
- Permissions: Does it request Full Disk Access or other system permissions, and are those permissions necessary for the task?
- Network use: Which tools or services send information off the Mac?
- Actions: Does the agent ask before sending messages, deleting data, spending money, or making other consequential changes?
- Activity: Does it wait for your instructions, or can it act autonomously or remain active in the background?
When will Apple change Full Disk Access?
Apple has not announced a release date or target macOS version. As of October 3, 2026, the company has also not specified whether the change will involve a redesigned prompt or another mechanism. Until Apple provides those details, claims about a particular update, interface, or app being affected are not established.

What Apple’s local-AI figures do—and do not—show
Apple’s WWDC26 local-AI session includes performance and hardware examples, but they are vendor claims tied to the setups Apple describes—not independent benchmarks or requirements for typical agent use.
Quick Recap
- Apple says Neural Accelerator improvements make prompt processing “almost four times faster”; the session does not establish that result for every Mac or model.
- Apple describes distributed inference across four Macs as delivering “up to three times” the speed. That claim applies to the four-node setup in the session.
- Apple uses a 1.6-trillion-parameter DeepSeek model requiring more than 800 GB for weights as an illustration of large-model demands, not as a minimum for local AI.
