For a more private, organized iPhone photo library, keep authentication enabled for Hidden and Recently Deleted, decide whether the Hidden album should appear in Photos, and choose a sharing option based on who can change or keep the images. These controls have different jobs: albums help you find photos, while iCloud Photos syncs library changes across your devices.
Keep Hidden and Recently Deleted locked
On iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Photos. Leave the relevant Use Face ID, Use Touch ID, or Use Passcode option on to keep the Hidden and Recently Deleted collections locked. Apple says these collections are locked by default and can be opened with the device’s available authentication method. Apple’s iPhone Photos guide covers the current controls.

You can also turn off Show Hidden Album to remove the Hidden collection from view in Photos. That hides the collection’s entry in the app; it does not remove the photos from the device or create a separate encrypted vault.

Know what hiding and deleting do across devices
If iCloud Photos is enabled, hiding or deleting an item updates its status across devices signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Photos on. Deletion is not limited to the device where you tap Delete. Apple says deleted items remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days, where you can recover them or permanently remove them sooner. Apple Support’s iPhone guidance explains the recovery period and its missing-photos guidance explains how deletion affects the library.

Use albums to organize, not to make a backup
Albums make a library easier to browse, but they are not independent copies. Apple says deleting an item from Photos deletes it everywhere, including from any album containing it. If an image matters, do not rely on putting it in an album as protection against deletion.
Choose the right way to share photos
Apple offers two distinct sharing features. An iCloud Shared Photo Library is a collaborative library whose participants can change its contents. Shared Albums are for sharing selected sets with chosen people, with an optional public-link setting. Choose based on whether collaborators should manage shared originals or simply view a shared album.

Set up an iCloud Shared Photo Library
Use this when a group wants one shared collection and agrees that participants can contribute to and manage its contents. Before creating it, decide with the group what belongs there and who should be invited. The organizer can invite up to five people besides themselves, and all shared content uses the organizer’s iCloud storage. On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Photos > Shared Library. Apple also provides choices such as manual sharing and sharing when at home, as well as Personal Library, Shared Library, or Both Libraries views. Use Shared Albums for selected sets
Choose Shared Albums when you want to share particular photos with selected people rather than create a collaborative library. Review the participant list before sharing, and check whether Public Website is enabled: anyone who has that link can view the album. Also remember that deleting the shared album does not necessarily retrieve copies recipients saved or downloaded. Apple says a Shared Album uploads a copy, and downloaded content may not include the same information as the original. Shared Albums do not count against iCloud storage, according to Apple’s iCloud overview. For iPhone instructions, see Apple’s Shared Albums guide.

Use the controls that match your goal
- For privacy on your iPhone: keep the Hidden and Recently Deleted authentication option enabled; turn off Show Hidden Album if you do not want that collection listed in Photos.
- For a personal library across Apple devices: understand that iCloud Photos syncs hide and delete actions, and that albums are not backups.
- For group curation: use Shared Photo Library only when participants should be able to add, edit, or delete content.
- For a limited shared selection: use a Shared Album, review its audience and public-link setting, and account for recipients keeping copies.
