Apple Pencil vs. Logitech Crayon: Which Stylus Is Right for Your iPad?

The right iPad stylus depends first on your exact iPad model, then on whether you need simple notes and markup, tilt sensitivity or pressure-sensitive drawing.

Choose by checking your exact iPad model first, then matching the stylus to your work. Logitech Crayon (USB-C) is geared toward straightforward notes and PDF annotation, Apple Pencil (USB-C) offers Apple’s basic tilt-sensitive Pencil workflow, and Apple Pencil Pro adds pressure sensitivity and advanced controls for supported iPads. Compatibility and features differ by generation, so verify the model before buying.

Check compatibility before comparing features

“Works with iPad” is not specific enough to prevent a wrong purchase. Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility list identifies supported iPad models and minimum iPadOS versions by Pencil generation. Logitech describes Crayon as compatible with iPads from 2018 onward, but you should still confirm your precise iPad and Crayon variant.

Apple Pencil Pro supports a narrower set of newer iPads: iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch (M4 or M5), iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch (M2, M3 or M4), and iPad mini (A17 Pro), with iPadOS 17.5 or later. Apple Pencil (USB-C) supports a broader range, including iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16), various iPad Air and iPad Pro generations, and iPad mini (6th generation and A17 Pro), with iPadOS 17.1.1 or later. These examples are not a substitute for checking the full model-by-model list; first- and second-generation Apple Pencils have different compatibility lists.

Logitech sells a USB-C Crayon and also has material describing a Lightning version. Do not assume their charging hardware or specifications are identical. The current US product page is for Logitech Crayon (USB-C); check the exact listing and device before ordering.

What differs in everyday use?

Decision point Logitech Crayon (USB-C) Apple Pencil (USB-C) Apple Pencil Pro
Setup Turn it on and write; Logitech says it does not require complex Bluetooth pairing. Pairs through a USB-C cable. Pairs magnetically with compatible iPads.
Line control Tilt changes line weight, according to Logitech. Tilt sensitivity. Tilt and pressure sensitivity, plus additional controls.
Palm interaction Logitech describes palm rejection. Not stated in the cited Apple specifications. Not stated in the cited Apple specifications.
Charging and storage USB-C cable charging; confirm details for the specific Crayon listing. USB-C cable charging; magnetic attachment for storage. Magnetic pairing, charging and storage.
Best fit Simple writing and annotation. A compatible iPad’s basic Apple Pencil workflow. Supported iPads and drawing workflows that use pressure and added controls.

These are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not independent performance tests. Logitech says Crayon works with Apple Pencil-supported apps, but that does not establish that every app exposes identical features with every stylus. Apple’s Pencil family comparison lists pressure sensitivity for Pro, but not for Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple’s USB-C Pencil technical specifications give further details on charging, supported models and hover.

Which one fits your work?

Choose Logitech Crayon (USB-C) for notes and markup

If your main tasks are handwritten notes, marking up PDFs or sketching diagrams, Crayon emphasizes getting started simply: Logitech says it turns on without complex Bluetooth pairing, supports palm rejection and varies line weight with tilt. Those features make it a practical option when you do not need pressure-sensitive drawing. Logitech’s Crayon product information also describes note-taking, annotation and drawing use cases.

Choose Apple Pencil (USB-C) for a basic Apple Pencil workflow

This model provides tilt sensitivity on compatible iPads and charges through a USB-C cable. It is worth considering if you want an Apple Pencil and do not need the Pro model’s pressure sensitivity or controls. Its magnetic attachment is for storage; charging is by cable, not the magnetic charging workflow of Pencil Pro.

Choose Apple Pencil Pro for pressure-sensitive illustration

For illustration on a supported iPad, Pro is the option in this comparison with pressure sensitivity and advanced controls. Apple lists squeeze, barrel roll, haptics, double-tap and Find My among its features. Those capabilities matter most when your apps and drawing habits use them; they are not a reason to buy Pro if your iPad is incompatible or your work is mostly basic note-taking.

Check the app and the physical version

Before buying, confirm that your iPad appears on the manufacturer’s list and that your iPadOS meets the stated minimum. Then check that the app you use supports the stylus features you care about, such as pressure or tilt. Logitech’s statement that Crayon works with Apple Pencil-supported apps does not guarantee identical behavior in every app.

For Crayon, verify that the listing is specifically the USB-C or Lightning version you intend to buy. Older Logitech setup documentation covers legacy Crayon and iPad combinations; it says Crayon is not pressure-sensitive, but it is not a complete current specification sheet for the USB-C product. The current feature comparison from Apple establishes that Pencil (USB-C) lacks listed pressure sensitivity while Pencil Pro supports it.

Replacing a Logitech Crayon tip

Logitech says Crayon tips can be replaced and replacement tips are sold separately. Match the replacement to the exact Crayon version; do not assume a tip listing for one variant fits another.
