Apple Pay launched in India on 30 September 2026, but support is limited at launch to eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. You can use it with a compatible iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch; Apple says Mac support is coming soon. Whether a payment works depends on having an eligible card and, for in-store purchases, a contactless terminal—or a participating app or website for online checkout.
Which cards work with Apple Pay in India?
Apple’s current India bank list names Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. That does not mean every Axis Bank credit card is eligible: Apple cautions that some card types from participating banks may not be supported, so check your specific card with Axis Bank if Wallet will not add it. Apple’s India bank list and Axis Bank’s launch announcement describe the eligible category.

Apple’s published India materials do not currently confirm support for UPI, RuPay, debit cards or cards issued by other Indian banks. Treat these as unavailable or unconfirmed for the present launch, rather than assuming that a card will work because its bank or network is accepted elsewhere. Apple’s bank list can change as issuers are added.

Apple says Apple Pay is available in India on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Its launch announcement specifies iPhone XR or later running iOS 18 or later, and Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 11 or later, paired with iPhone XR or later. Check that your device is updated and compatible before setting up a card. Apple’s 30 September 2026 launch announcement gives these launch requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
An Apple Watch is optional: a compatible iPhone can make in-store payments by itself. Apple identifies iPad for online and in-app payments. Mac support is described as “coming soon,” with no date stated.
How to add an eligible card
- Start in Wallet or the Axis Bank app. On iPhone, open Wallet and tap the plus sign. Alternatively, use the latest Axis Bank mobile banking app to add a card.
- Follow the prompts. Select or enter the eligible Axis Bank card details and complete the on-screen steps.
- Verify with the bank. Finish the verification requested by Axis Bank. Apple’s India App Store explainer says the card is ready to use after the bank verifies it.
How to pay in a shop, app or website
In a shop
At a contactless payment terminal, double-click the iPhone’s side button—or Home button on a model with one—authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or passcode if prompted, then hold the top of the iPhone near the reader. On Apple Watch, double-click the side button and hold the display near the terminal. The merchant must accept contactless payments, and the card used must be eligible.

Apple says an in-store Apple Pay purchase can be made without Wi-Fi or cellular service because the device communicates with the terminal using NFC. Transaction history may not appear until the device reconnects.
In an app or on a website
Choose Apple Pay at checkout when the merchant offers it, then authenticate on your device. Depending on the checkout and merchant, Apple Pay can supply billing, shipping and contact details without requiring you to enter them again. Online acceptance is not automatic just because a shop has a contactless terminal.

Where can you use it—and what is not confirmed?
Apple’s launch materials name Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg and Zomato among merchants, and its App Store explainer also gives examples including EaseMyTrip, Nykaa, bigbasket and District. These are examples, not a guarantee that every outlet, app or payment flow will offer Apple Pay. Availability depends on the merchant’s checkout. Apple also names payment providers it worked with, including Cashfree, Juspay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs, Razorpay and Worldline; a provider relationship does not mean every merchant using that provider accepts Apple Pay. See the launch announcement and App Store explainer for Apple’s examples.
- Mac: Apple says support is coming soon; it has not given a date.
- UPI, RuPay, debit cards and other Indian issuers: Apple’s reviewed India materials do not confirm support for these at launch.
- Every store or online checkout: Not guaranteed. A supported card and a merchant that accepts Apple Pay are both necessary.
Apple describes the service as available in more than 90 countries and regions, with more than 11,000 bank and network partners worldwide. Those are global figures in its 30 September 2026 announcement, not counts of Indian banks, merchants or users.

Security, fees and card rewards
Apple says the physical card number is not stored on the device or its servers and is not shared with merchants. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is encrypted and stored in the device’s Secure Element. Apple says it does not retain transaction information that can be tied back to a user, and that payments on a lost iPhone can be suspended through Find My. These are Apple’s descriptions of its design and practices, not a promise that fraud is impossible. Apple’s launch announcement explains its approach.
