Neither Apple News nor Google News can be called universally more balanced based on the available evidence. In AllSides’ 2025 samples, both feeds leaned heavily toward outlets it rates Left or Lean Left; Apple’s sample included a larger Center-rated share. Those samples cover different sections and time windows, and outlet ratings do not establish whether an individual story is accurate or fair. For comparing several publishers’ coverage of one event, Google News has the clearest built-in tool: Full Coverage. Apple News pairs common, editor-selected Top Stories with controls for following or blocking channels and topics.
What does “balanced news coverage” mean?
Balance can refer to several different things: the ideological range of publishers in a feed, whether a story includes competing viewpoints, the accuracy of an article, or the fairness of its framing. These measures are related, but none stands in for all the others.

The figures below describe the outlets in sampled sections, using AllSides’ outlet ratings. They do not rate the truth, accuracy, or fairness of each article. Nor do they show that every reader saw the same feed: location, language, personalization, and the date of collection matter.
What do the available samples show?
AllSides’ 2026 analysis reported these results from samples collected in 2025:
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
| Service and sampled sections | Left or Lean Left | Center | Right or Lean Right |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple News: Top Stories and Trending Stories; 166 articles sampled across two weeks in 2025 | 50% | 23% | 2% |
| Google News: homepage Top Stories, U.S., and World sections; sample collected over two weeks in November 2025 | 73% | 25% | 1% |
Source: AllSides’ 2026 analysis. The reported categories do not add to 100%; the remaining share may reflect unrated outlets or rounding, so the percentages should not be normalized.
Within these particular samples, Apple had a larger Center-rated share, while Google had a larger Left/Lean Left share. This is a snapshot, not a controlled head-to-head test: the services’ sections and sampling windows differ. AllSides ratings apply to outlets, not automatically to each article those outlets publish.

Google says it featured more than 145,000 different sources in the preceding month in its 2026 account of the service. That is a company-reported measure of source breadth, not evidence that those sources represent distinct viewpoints or that the feed is ideologically balanced. Google describes access to context and diverse perspectives as a product goal; that statement is not an independent assessment of results.

How Google News handles multiple perspectives
Google News combines personalized areas with features designed to help readers explore coverage beyond a single source. Google says its systems identify major stories and select content using factors that include prominence, freshness, and source authoritativeness. Its description of the product is available in How News Works.
Full Coverage
Full Coverage gathers related reports from different sources around a story. Google says this view is not personalized apart from language, region, and subscriptions, making it the most direct built-in option in this comparison for seeing how multiple publishers cover the same event. It does not guarantee that every relevant viewpoint is represented. See Google News’ explanation of how stories are selected.
Personalized sections and controls
Other Google News sections can reflect interests and sources a reader follows, as well as activity across Google services and YouTube, according to Google’s help documentation. Following sources and tailoring interests can shape what appears, but personalization by itself does not establish that a feed is biased or unbiased.

How Apple News mixes editorial selection and personalization
Apple’s Today feed can include editor-selected Top Stories, stories from followed channels and topics, suggestions, trending stories, and other features whose availability varies by location. Apple says Top Stories appear the same for everyone. That does not mean every part of Today is identical for all readers, or that every relevant viewpoint appears in Top Stories.

Readers can follow or block channels and topics to shape parts of their experience. Apple’s iPhone guide to seeing news chosen for you explains the Today feed and these controls. Apple also says interactions such as stories read, saved, or shared, along with followed topics and channels, can tailor features such as Today; details are in Apple News & Privacy.

Apple’s combination of shared editorial Top Stories and tailored areas gives readers both a common starting point and some control over the sources and subjects they see. Neither editorial selection nor personalization alone guarantees balanced coverage.
What earlier independent research can—and cannot—tell you
A 2019 U.S. study audited Apple News’ Trending Stories and Top Stories over two months. It found that human-curated Top Stories outperformed algorithmically curated Trending Stories on several measures of source diversity, concentration, and evenness. The study, Auditing News Curation Systems: A Case Study Examining Algorithmic and Editorial Logic in Apple News, is useful historical context about those Apple sections. It does not establish how Apple News works today or compare its current performance with Google News.
More broadly, the available AllSides samples compare outlet ratings in selected sections, while the Apple study examines different measures within one service at an earlier time. Neither establishes which app delivers more accurate articles or a fuller range of viewpoints for the same readers, regions, sections, and dates.
Which app should you use to compare coverage?
- Choose Google News as your starting point for one story: open Full Coverage to inspect related reports from multiple publishers in one place.
- Use Apple News if you want a shared editorial starting point plus feed controls: read Top Stories, then follow channels and topics that broaden the range of publishers you encounter.
- On either app, go beyond the default feed: compare more than one report, look at the original reporting, and seek independent verification for consequential claims.
These are practical ways to compare coverage, not guarantees of neutrality. A list of publishers is only a starting point: assess what each article reports, what evidence it provides, and which perspectives it includes.
