Identify the symptom first, then work through the account, subscription, device, network, and source-library checks below.
Do not start by turning Sync Library off. That step removes downloaded Apple Music tracks from the iPhone, so it belongs near the end of the process.

Identify what is not syncing
| What you see | Likely area | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The entire library is absent | Account, subscription, or Sync Library setting | Verify the Apple Account, active subscription, and Sync Library on the iPhone |
| Only recent additions are missing | The Mac or PC source library has not uploaded its changes | Check the cloud-library update status on the originating computer |
| Songs are greyed out or say they are unavailable | Cloud status, account, region, restrictions, or a missing local file | Inspect the specific track on the source computer |
| Playlists are missing but songs appear | Playlist update delay or a different account | Confirm the same account and wait for the library update to finish |
| Music appears but will not play offline | The item is in the cloud library but is not downloaded | Check storage, network, and download settings |
| Purchased music is missing | The purchase belongs to another Apple Account | Use the account that made the purchase |
Apple’s Sync Library feature is different from copying music to an iPhone with Finder, iTunes, or the Windows Devices app. Subscription songs are handled through Apple Music and Sync Library, not ordinary USB device syncing.
Check Apple’s service status first
Open Apple’s live System Status page. Check both Apple Music and Apple Music Subscriptions. If either service is experiencing an outage, wait for Apple to restore it before changing accounts or rebuilding your library.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
If the status page is clear, open Safari and test another website. Try a different Wi‑Fi network or cellular data, and temporarily disable a VPN or third-party security/filtering app. Apple lists those checks for connection problems with its services; restart the iPhone and network equipment if other devices on the same network also fail.
Confirm the Apple Account and subscription
On the iPhone, open Music, tap your profile or photo, choose Account Settings, and verify the account. It must be the account used for the Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription and the other devices.
- Check for a personal account versus a work or school account.
- Check whether Family Sharing provides access through another family member.
- After an iPhone migration, make sure an older Apple Account was not retained.
- Remember that iCloud and Media & Purchases can show different accounts.
- Purchased songs may belong to an account different from the one providing Apple Music.
Check the subscription at Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. A failed payment, expired plan, or removed Family Sharing access can stop Apple Music subscription songs from streaming or playing as downloads. Apple explains subscription management in its iPhone User Guide and subscription support page.

Sync Library requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription, with availability varying by country or region. Do not sign out until you have confirmed the correct account, password, and two-factor authentication method.

iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Music.
- Turn on Sync Library.
Some older iOS documentation shows the path as Settings > Music; newer iOS versions place app settings under Settings > Apps. Apple’s current guide is Add music to iPhone and listen offline.
Mac
- Open Music.
- Choose Music > Settings.
- Open General and select Sync Library.
- Wait for the updating message at the bottom of the sidebar to finish.
Windows PC
- Open the Apple Music app and confirm the Apple Account.
- Open the sidebar actions menu and choose Settings > General.
- Turn on Sync Library and wait for the cloud-library update to complete.
Older iTunes installations may call the setting iCloud Music Library. If Sync Library is missing entirely, check the subscription and account before repeatedly toggling settings, then update iOS or the Apple Music app.

Update the source library before troubleshooting the iPhone
When music originates on a Mac or PC, the iPhone cannot receive changes that have not reached the cloud library. Leave the source computer online until its update finishes, then check the iPhone and other devices.
Apple Music may upload a local track, match it to an Apple catalog version, or reject it, so individual songs can have different cloud statuses. Moved or deleted files, duplicate or corrupt entries, unusual formats or sizes, alternate versions, and region restrictions can all produce different results. Apple documents a cloud-library limit of up to 100,000 songs excluding iTunes Store purchases, with files no larger than 200 MB; these are limits, not a promise that every collection will sync without exceptions. See Apple’s Windows library guide.

Fix missing or greyed-out songs
- Confirm the same Apple Account and Sync Library setting on every device.
- Make sure each device is online.
- On the source computer, inspect the track’s cloud status and confirm its original file still exists.
- Allow the source computer to update first, then update the other devices.
- If one entry remains greyed out, remove that entry and add the song again when an available version exists.
Also check whether the track is unavailable in your country or region, was added under another account, or is blocked by explicit-content restrictions. In Screen Time, review content restrictions if only explicit songs are affected. A live, remastered, clean, or explicit version may not match the local file exactly. Apple’s troubleshooting sequence for these cases is in Missing or greyed-out songs in Music.
When music is visible but downloads fail
- Use Wi‑Fi and try the download again from the album, playlist, or library entry.
- Check free iPhone storage; a visible cloud item still needs local space for offline playback.
- Open Settings > Apps > Music and review Cellular Data, Download over Cellular, and Automatic Downloads.
- Restart the Music app and iPhone before taking more destructive action.
- Confirm the subscription remains active.
Lossless and high-resolution lossless audio require substantially more storage and data than standard downloads. Cellular charges, slower starts, or disabled cellular downloading can therefore look like a sync failure. “Added to Library” means the item is available through the cloud library; “Downloaded” means it is stored on the iPhone for offline playback. Pinning or favoriting does not necessarily create an offline copy. Apple documents these controls in its iPhone music guide.

Apple recommends turning Sync Library off and on again on all devices when music remains missing, but do this only after the checks above.

Before you begin: back up the original Mac or PC library, confirm that the music can be re-downloaded, and expect downloaded Apple Music tracks to be removed from the iPhone. This does not mean the cloud library or purchased music on other devices has been deleted, but offline Apple Music items will need to be downloaded again.
- Turn off Sync Library on the iPhone and the relevant computers.
- Restart the devices.
- Turn Sync Library back on everywhere, starting with the source computer.
- Wait for a large library to rebuild before judging the result.
- Re-download music needed for offline playback.
Do not delete the local Mac or PC library as a generic fix. Apple’s warning about downloaded music appears in the iPhone guide and its missing-songs guidance.
Use manual syncing when you do not have Apple Music
Without an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription, Sync Library is not available. For owned music and local files, use the separate computer-to-iPhone sync workflow through Finder on Mac or the Apple Devices app on Windows. Apple explains that subscription songs cannot be transferred through ordinary device syncing in its Windows device guide.
When to contact Apple
Contact Apple Support when the correct account and active subscription are confirmed, Sync Library is enabled, multiple networks have been tested, the source library has finished updating, and the problem persists across devices while the System Status page shows no outage. Provide the affected account, device models and software versions, the exact symptom, and whether the issue affects all songs or only particular tracks.
