Apple says the M6 is up to 1.2× faster than the M5 in multithreaded CPU performance. That is a best-case, workload-dependent claim—not a promise that every app or Mac will run 20% faster. Apple also cites separate gains for AI GPU compute, complex-graphics geometry rates, and memory bandwidth; none is a general-purpose speedup figure.
How much faster is M6 than M5?
For multithreaded CPU work, Apple’s direct comparison is “up to 1.2×” the M5’s performance. In other words, the M6 can reach up to 20% higher performance in the workloads behind that claim. Apple does not establish that increase for every task, so it should not be read as a blanket estimate for everyday use.

The other published figures describe different kinds of capability. Apple says M6 has nearly 30% higher peak GPU compute for AI, 50% higher geometry rates for complex graphics, and 10% more unified memory bandwidth than M5. These metrics are not interchangeable: an AI compute peak or graphics geometry rate does not directly translate into the same percentage reduction in an app’s processing time.

| Measure | Apple’s M6-versus-M5 claim | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Multithreaded CPU | Up to 1.2× faster | A maximum claim for CPU workloads that use multiple cores. |
| Single-threaded CPU | No direct M6-to-M5 percentage stated in the announcement | Apple calls M6 the world’s fastest for single-threaded performance, but that is not a published M5 comparison ratio. |
| Peak GPU compute for AI | Nearly 30% higher | A peak AI-compute measure, not a general app-speed claim. |
| Geometry rate for complex graphics | 50% higher | A graphics-specific measure. |
| Unified memory bandwidth | 10% higher: up to 170GB/s for M6 versus 153GB/s for M5 | The rate at which the chip can move data to and from unified memory; it is not itself a CPU or app-performance percentage. |
Apple’s announcement describes M6 as built on a 2 nm process and says it combines a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and more unified memory bandwidth. Those architecture details help explain what changed, but the quantified workload claims are the more useful guide to expected speed.

What does the early Geekbench result show?
A Geekbench Browser record for an M6 Mac18,5, uploaded September 15, 2026, reports a Geekbench 7 score of 4,071 single-core and 22,783 multi-core. MacRumors compared that single result with M5 averages of 3,641 single-core and 17,948 multi-core. On those figures, the M6 submission is about 12% higher in single-core and 27% higher in multi-core.
That comparison is a useful early datapoint, not a definitive estimate of the M6’s advantage. MacRumors describes the M6 result as unverified; it is one submission, while the M5 figures are averages from a different system. Geekbench scores also do not test GPU performance or establish how a particular application, battery life, or power use will compare.

Why the Mac configuration matters
A chip-to-chip claim does not automatically describe the difference between two complete computers. Apple’s Mac mini specifications list an M6 configuration with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The same page lists M5 Pro configurations with either a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU or an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU. M5 Pro is a different chip tier, not the baseline M5 used in Apple’s direct comparison.

These are the configurations listed on Apple’s Mac mini specification page, not a controlled M6-versus-standard-M5 comparison. More memory or storage can affect whether a machine suits a particular workload, but does not alter the meaning of Apple’s processor-performance ratio.

How to use the numbers when choosing a Mac
- For work that keeps many CPU cores busy: treat “up to 1.2×” as Apple’s best-case multithreaded claim, then look for a repeatable benchmark or test of the exact apps you use.
- For AI features or graphics: keep the nearly 30% AI compute and 50% geometry figures in their specific contexts. They do not guarantee those gains in every AI tool or graphics application.
- For memory-heavy work: note the 10% bandwidth increase alongside the available memory capacity. Bandwidth and capacity are separate considerations.
- For a whole-computer purchase: compare the actual configurations, including core counts, memory, and storage. Avoid using an M5 Pro Mac mini as a stand-in for the baseline M5 chip.
Apple’s older M5 announcement said M5 delivered up to 15% faster multithreaded performance than M4 and up to 153GB/s memory bandwidth. Those are M5-to-M4 figures, not evidence of M6’s speed over M5. Apple said its M5 claims used selected industry-standard benchmarks and identified preproduction and production test systems.

The clearest published answer is that M6 is up to 1.2× faster than M5 for multithreaded CPU performance, with separate Apple claims for AI GPU compute, complex-graphics geometry, and memory bandwidth. The single Geekbench 7 submission points in the same general direction for CPU scores, but its status and limited sample make it insufficient to establish typical results. A reliable real-application percentage would require matched systems, software versions, workloads, and repeatable testing; no universal figure is established by these claims.
