Apple says M6 is its first 2 nm chip, with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine and up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. A September 2026 GPU FFT study suggests that data movement can limit performance in some large-batch workloads, even when the chip has substantial compute resources. That is a specific workload finding—not a verdict that M6 is slow across apps.
What Apple announced about M6
Apple announced M6 on August 25, 2026, describing it as its first chip built using a 2 nm process. The company lists a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine and up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. Apple says M6 debuted in the new Mac mini. Apple’s announcement is the source for those specifications and the launch-device claim.

Apple’s vice president of Silicon Engineering Group, Sri Santhanam, characterized the design this way: “Built using the cutting-edge 2 nm process, M6 combines a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and more unified memory bandwidth to power through workloads with amazing energy efficiency.” That is Apple’s description, not an independent test result. Memory bandwidth is the rate at which data can move between memory and processors. A processor may have considerable capacity to perform calculations, but a workload can still stall if it needs to fetch or store data faster than memory can supply it. This is especially relevant when large working sets must repeatedly travel between main memory and the GPU.

The “up to 170GB/s” figure is Apple’s announced maximum for M6. It should not be treated as the measured throughput of every application: actual results depend on the workload, software, data reuse and measurement method. Nor does the 2 nm process label by itself establish how fast a task will run; it describes Apple’s process claim, not a direct performance score.
What the M6 FFT study measured
A September 2026 arXiv preprint by Bergach and colleagues examined GPU fast Fourier transform (FFT) workloads on M6. For selected large-batch FFT sizes, the authors report that tested libraries and kernels reached 149–154 GB/s, near the paper’s stated 150 GB/s main-memory limit. They conclude that data movement, rather than arithmetic throughput, determines speed in those tested cases. These figures describe the authors’ test setup and results, not the maximum or typical bandwidth of every M6 workload. The paper is a preprint, and its findings have not been independently replicated in the sources cited here. Read the preprint.

Cache and local-memory effects
The authors warn that cache-resident benchmarks can overstate real throughput by as much as 3.7×. A benchmark whose data fits in cache can reuse it without repeatedly fetching it from main memory, so its result may not represent a larger working set.
The paper also reports a sharp slowdown when some transforms exceed the GPU’s 32 KiB of local memory: MPSGraph and MLX lost at least half their speed in the tested cases. That finding concerns those libraries and transforms; it does not establish a universal 32 KiB performance threshold for M6 applications.

Bandwidth-bound does not mean ineffective
The same study reports that register-resident transforms improved results versus MPSGraph. For a 4096 × 4096 synthetic aperture radar image, its authors measured 8.1 ms on the GPU, or 6.0 ms with half-precision intermediates. These are the paper’s reported results, not independently replicated benchmarks. They illustrate that efficient data placement and algorithm choices can matter alongside peak compute capability.
What this means for other workloads
The FFT results are direct evidence about FFT data movement, not a test of every GPU application or of on-device language-model inference. MacRumors describes memory bandwidth as a relevant constraint for large language models running locally, but that is a separate workload interpretation rather than a result established by the FFT paper. MacRumors’ analysis also reports that M6’s 170GB/s is about 10% above M5’s reported 153.6GB/s; that comparison is secondary reporting, not a separate Apple-confirmed comparison in the announcement.

For a specific app or purchase decision, the useful comparison is a benchmark of the same task on the exact machines and configurations under consideration. Check whether it measures sustained work, whether its data fits in cache, and whether it runs on the CPU or GPU. A peak bandwidth specification and a workload benchmark answer different questions.

How to read the 2 nm claim
Apple’s first-2-nm description is a process claim, while the listed core counts and up-to bandwidth are chip specifications. Neither alone tells you how much faster a particular app will be. Independent, workload-matched measurements are needed to establish that. The September FFT preprint provides one concrete example: despite M6’s new design, large-batch transforms in its tests approached the authors’ stated main-memory limit.
