At US launch, the iPhone 17 and Pixel 10 both started at $799, but not with the same storage: Apple’s entry iPhone 17 configuration is 256GB, while Google’s $799 Pixel 10 configuration is 128GB. The Pixel 10’s 256GB version was listed at $899 on the US Google Store on October 4, 2026. For most buyers, the deciding differences are storage at the price you can actually get, a dedicated 5x telephoto camera on the Pixel, and whether you prefer iOS or Google’s Pixel software.

Is the Pixel 10 cheaper than the iPhone 17?
At the $799 starting point, neither has a lower launch price based on the cited US comparison. The capacities differ, though: the iPhone 17 starts at 256GB, while the Pixel 10 starts at 128GB. Google’s US Store listed the Pixel 10 at $799 for 128GB and $899 for 256GB on October 4, 2026. Apple’s $799 figure is a launch starting price reported by Tom’s Guide, not a confirmed current checkout price; check Apple’s live store and local retailers before buying. Taxes, promotions, carrier deals and availability can also change the amount paid. See Tom’s Guide’s launch comparison alongside the Apple announcement and Google Store configurations.

If you need 256GB, compare the iPhone’s current 256GB price with the Pixel 10 256GB listing, rather than treating both $799 entry prices as equivalent. Apple also announced a 512GB iPhone 17 option; the cited Google configuration page lists Pixel 10 in 128GB and 256GB. The available evidence does not establish a current Apple checkout price, so the launch figure should not be treated as today’s guaranteed price.

Which phone has the more useful camera system?
Pixel 10: a dedicated 5x telephoto lens
The Pixel 10 has a separate 10.8MP telephoto camera with a 5x lens. That gives it a distinct hardware advantage for framing distant subjects without relying solely on a crop from the main camera. Google also lists up to 20x Super Res Zoom, a computational zoom feature; it is not the same thing as having optical detail at 20x.
iPhone 17: main, ultrawide and 2x framing
The iPhone 17 uses a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide. Apple describes 2x telephoto framing as optical quality, but it is not a separate long-reach telephoto lens like the Pixel’s 5x camera. Apple lists digital zoom up to 10x. If you often photograph stage performers, wildlife or other faraway subjects, the Pixel’s dedicated 5x lens is the more relevant hardware distinction; that alone does not establish which phone takes better photos overall.

Front cameras and video
Apple lists an 18MP Center Stage front camera and announces simultaneous front- and rear-camera recording, plus rear 4K video at up to 60fps in Dolby Vision. Google lists a 10.5MP autofocus front camera and 4K video. Megapixel counts and headline recording formats do not establish a categorical image-quality winner; the cited manufacturer pages are not a matched independent camera test. Full camera specifications are available from Apple and Google.

How do the displays compare?
Both phones have a 6.3-inch display and support refresh rates up to 120Hz-class smoothness. Apple specifies the iPhone 17 panel as OLED, with 2622 × 1206 resolution, 460 pixels per inch and 3000-nit peak outdoor brightness. Google calls the Pixel 10 screen Actua and advertises 3000-nit peak brightness. These are manufacturer figures, not standardized independent brightness measurements, so matching advertised peak numbers do not prove identical real-world visibility. Consult the official iPhone specifications and Pixel product page for the details.

Which has better battery life?
The published claims use different measures: Apple says iPhone 17 offers up to 30 hours of video playback, while Google says Pixel 10 lasts over 24 hours in typical use and up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. Those figures cannot establish which phone lasts longer in the same day-to-day workload. The cited sources do not provide a matched independent battery test. Treat them as each manufacturer’s own claims, not a head-to-head result. Sources: Apple and Google.
Software, AI features and updates
The iPhone 17 runs iOS and includes Apple Intelligence features with its A19 chip. Pixel 10 runs Google’s Pixel software on Tensor G5 and lists Gemini Nano, Magic Cue and Camera Coach. These are different feature sets rather than a single comparable measure of “better AI”; availability can depend on software version, language and region. Check the current product and software information for the features you intend to use.

Google announced seven years of Pixel Drops plus OS and security updates for the Pixel 10 family. The cited Apple specification page does not establish a specific number of years of iPhone 17 support, so a like-for-like support-duration comparison cannot be made from these sources. Google’s announcement is at Google’s Pixel launch post.

Charging and ecosystem fit
iPhone 17 supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W. Pixel 10 supports Qi2-certified magnetic Pixelsnap charging. To use magnetic wireless charging, choose a Qi2 charger compatible with the phone and verify the device-specific charging rate; certification alone does not mean every charger delivers the same rate.

Beyond charging, the practical choice may be the devices and services you already use. An iPhone can suit someone who values continuity with Apple devices and services; Pixel may suit someone who prefers Android, Pixel features or Google services. That is an ecosystem preference, not a universal performance verdict.
Quick Recap
Which one should you buy?
- Choose iPhone 17 if you want iOS, use Apple devices or services, or value the 256GB entry configuration at Apple’s reported $799 launch starting price—after checking current pricing.
- Choose Pixel 10 if you prefer Android or Pixel software, want a dedicated 5x telephoto camera, or want Google’s stated seven-year update commitment.
- Compare current prices carefully if storage matters: the $799 entry configurations do not have equal capacity, and the observed Pixel 10 256GB price was $899 on October 4, 2026.
- Do not decide on battery or overall camera quality from these specification claims alone. The cited sources do not supply a matched independent comparison for those outcomes.
