Choose the iPhone 16e for Apple Intelligence, substantially longer rated battery life, the newer A18 chip, an Action button and often lower certified-refurbished pricing. Choose the iPhone 15 for its ultrawide camera, Dynamic Island, brighter display and MagSafe accessories. The 16e is newer, but it is not a feature-for-feature upgrade.

Design and display
iPhone 15: brighter, more modern front
The iPhone 15 has the Dynamic Island, which places calls, timers and Live Activities around the front camera cutout. Its OLED panel has slightly higher resolution and a much higher Apple-rated outdoor peak brightness, making HDR video and sunny-day viewing more comfortable. It comes in black, blue, green, yellow and pink.

The 16e returns to a notch rather than Dynamic Island. The OLED screen is still sharp at normal viewing distances, but its lower peak-brightness rating matters outdoors. Its Action button can launch Silent Mode, the camera, flashlight, Focus, Voice Memos or a shortcut. The iPhone 15 retains a dedicated Ring/Silent switch, which some users find faster and more predictable.

Cameras: flexibility beats novelty
What the iPhone 15 adds
The iPhone 15 combines a 48MP main camera with a separate 12MP ultrawide. The ultrawide’s true 0.5x view fits landscapes, architecture, interiors, large groups and close subjects that will not fit at 1x. This is the most important photographic advantage over the 16e.
How the iPhone 16e’s 2x mode works
The 16e has one 48MP Fusion rear camera. Its 2x setting uses the central portion of the sensor to create a 12MP, closer-looking view. That is useful for portraits and details, but it does not provide the broad 0.5x perspective of an ultrawide lens. Calling it a conventional long telephoto camera would be misleading.

Both phones have a 12MP TrueDepth front camera and capable 4K video. Pick the 15 if you regularly switch between 0.5x and 1x; pick the 16e if nearly all your photos are standard-view shots and battery or AI features matter more.

The A18 gives the 16e newer CPU, GPU and Neural Engine hardware than the A16 Bionic in the iPhone 15. Both are fast for iOS, streaming, photography and demanding games, so ordinary scrolling will not feel twice as fast. The meaningful differences are support for Apple Intelligence, greater headroom for future iOS features and better efficiency. A benchmark comparison by Tom’s Guide found the 16e materially ahead in Geekbench 6; results vary with software and test conditions.

Apple Intelligence features can include Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, Clean Up in Photos and evolving Siri and Visual Intelligence functions. Availability depends on iOS version, language, region, account settings and Apple’s changing service rollout. The iPhone 15 does not support Apple Intelligence.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the iPhone 16e for up to 26 hours of video playback versus up to 20 hours for the iPhone 15. That six-hour difference is an official playback rating, not a guarantee for every mix of cellular, camera, gaming and screen use. Newer A18 efficiency, Apple’s C1 modem and internal battery design contribute to the advantage; network conditions and software also matter.

Both phones charge through USB-C and use USB 2 data speeds, so neither is intended for Pro-level wired file transfers. The iPhone 15 supports MagSafe charging at up to 15W and aligns with magnetic accessories. The 16e supports Qi wireless charging but has no built-in MagSafe magnets. A magnetic case may hold some accessories, but it cannot necessarily reproduce every alignment or electrical feature of native MagSafe.

Connectivity, safety and durability
- Both models use 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C and satellite emergency features, with exact cellular bands and service availability depending on market and carrier.
- Both have IP68 water resistance; Apple’s stated 16e test condition is up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. Water resistance can decline after damage or repair.
- The 16e is 4g lighter. Modem efficiency is newer on the 16e, but real-world signal and speed depend on carrier coverage, bands and location.
Buying one in 2026
In the August 2026 U.S. snapshot, Apple’s main new-phone lineup emphasizes the iPhone 17 family, iPhone Air, iPhone 16/16 Plus and iPhone 17e. The iPhone 15 and 16e are therefore mainly remaining-stock, carrier, resale or certified-refurbished purchases rather than current side-by-side Apple Store models. These Apple refurbished prices were observed in August 2026 and can change with inventory. Apple says its certified refurbished iPhones include a new battery, new outer shell and one-year warranty; see the refurbished store and an example iPhone 16e product page.
For marketplace or carrier stock, verify battery health, unlocked status, return period, activation-lock status, parts-and-service history, cosmetic grade and warranty. Compare the total cost of a carrier installment, including trade-in requirements, new-line rules, premium-plan pricing and bill credits that may disappear if you leave.
Which iPhone should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 16e when
- You want Apple Intelligence and the newest processor in this comparison.
- Long battery life is more important than display brightness or camera variety.
- You mainly shoot at 1x or 2x and do not need 0.5x.
- You prefer the Action button and do not use MagSafe accessories.
- A certified-refurbished 16e is meaningfully cheaper than the iPhone 15.
Choose the iPhone 15 when
- You frequently use the ultrawide camera for landscapes, interiors, architecture or groups.
- You want Dynamic Island, a brighter outdoor display or more color choices.
- You already own MagSafe stands, wallets, car mounts, docks or battery packs.
- You find a substantially cheaper, healthy-battery unit and do not need Apple Intelligence.
Check alternatives before committing
If an iPhone 17e (listed by Apple from $599 at the time of the August 2026 snapshot) or iPhone 16 (from $699) is only modestly more expensive, compare warranty and current hardware before buying old stock. A 256GB iPhone 15 can also be better value than a 128GB 16e for a heavy photographer.
Bottom line
The iPhone 16e is the better practical buy for battery endurance, Apple Intelligence and newer hardware, especially around the observed $419 certified-refurbished price. The iPhone 15 remains the better phone for photography flexibility, Dynamic Island, outdoor display visibility and MagSafe. Let those features—not the model number alone—decide.
