What are the iPad Pro M5’s biggest advantages?
A high-end OLED display
Apple specifies a tandem OLED Ultra Retina XDR display for the 11-inch model, with adaptive ProMotion refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz, P3 color, and True Tone. Apple lists up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness and up to 1,600 nits peak brightness for HDR content. The 13-inch model offers more working area; the 11-inch is easier to prioritize for portability. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent display-test results.

Performance headroom for creative and demanding work
The M5 chip is a compelling feature for workloads that can use its CPU, GPU, or AI capabilities. Apple claims up to 3.5 times the AI performance of the M4 iPad Pro and up to 5.6 times that of the M1 iPad Pro. Those are Apple-stated maximums, not guarantees for every app or everyday task. Apple also reports more than 150GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, describing it as nearly 30% higher than the previous generation.

Modern wireless and external-display support
Apple says M5 iPad Pro models include its N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Wi-Fi + Cellular configurations add a C1X modem and 5G. Apple also specifies support for external displays up to 120Hz, including Adaptive Sync for compatible displays.
Portable design with optional pen and keyboard workflows
Apple lists the 11-inch Wi-Fi model at 5.3mm thick and 444g; its October 2025 announcement lists the 13-inch model at 5.1mm thick. The iPad Pro supports Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. These optional accessories can make the tablet more useful for drawing, handwriting, or extended typing, but they increase total spend.

What are the main drawbacks?
The tablet is expensive before accessories
At U.S. launch in October 2025, Apple’s starting prices were $999 for the 11-inch Wi-Fi model and $1,299 for the 13-inch Wi-Fi model. The Wi-Fi + Cellular versions started at $1,199 and $1,499, respectively. These are historical launch prices, not a statement of current sale prices or availability. Apple listed Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard separately, and higher storage tiers cost more.
Storage tiers change more than capacity
On the 11-inch model, Apple lists a 9-core CPU and 12GB of unified memory for 256GB and 512GB configurations. The 1TB and 2TB versions have a 10-core CPU and 16GB of unified memory. A buyer choosing a larger tier therefore gets a different listed CPU and memory configuration as well as more storage; it is not a capacity-only decision.

Battery life depends on use
Apple rates the 11-inch M5 iPad Pro for up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web use or video playback, or up to 9 hours of cellular web use. Apple says those tests used preproduction devices in August and September 2025 and that actual results vary with settings, use, network, and other factors. The figures are test-condition ceilings, not a promise of runtime for a particular workday.
Which iPad Pro M5 size and configuration should you choose?
Choose 11 inches for compactness
The 11-inch model is the more portable option. Consider it if you expect to read, take notes, or work on the move more often than you need a large canvas. Apple’s 5.3mm and 444g specifications apply to the 11-inch Wi-Fi model.

Choose 13 inches for more workspace
The 13-inch model gives you more screen area for tasks that benefit from a larger canvas, such as working with timelines, documents, or drawing. Its higher starting price is a trade-off for that added room; Apple listed a 5.1mm thickness in its launch announcement.

Pay for cellular when you need mobile data
Choose Wi-Fi + Cellular if you regularly need a connection away from Wi-Fi and are prepared for the higher device price and a compatible mobile plan. If your usual locations have Wi-Fi or you can tether when necessary, compare that convenience against the added expense before choosing cellular.

Pick storage and accessories around actual tasks
Estimate how much local space your apps, media, and active projects need, then compare the configuration’s CPU and memory as well as its capacity. Add Pencil Pro or Pencil (USB-C) if you have a pen-driven use case, or Magic Keyboard if typing is central to your workflow. An iPad-only setup costs less than buying accessories, so include them in the budget only when they serve a specific task.

For an M4 owner, the decision depends on the price difference and the work the tablet actually does. Apple’s largest M5 claims concern named AI, graphics, video, and storage workloads; they do not establish a noticeable improvement for routine browsing, reading, or note-taking. An upgrade is easier to justify if you regularly run demanding creative or graphics applications, benefit from the M5-specific performance claims, or need a different size or configuration. If the M4 already handles your work, weigh its condition and the cost of replacing it against the value of those specific gains.
