Choose Apple Intelligence for help inside supported Apple apps and device features; choose ChatGPT for a dedicated conversation, follow-up questions, voice chat, or standalone image creation. You can also use selected ChatGPT features through Apple Intelligence, so the choice does not have to be either-or. The right fit depends on your task, your Apple device and region, and whether you link a ChatGPT account.

When Apple Intelligence is the better fit
Editing text where you are already working
Use Writing Tools when you want to rewrite, proofread, or summarize text in Mail, Messages, Notes, Pages, or another supported writing surface. The practical benefit is that help is available within the Apple workflow instead of requiring you to move text into a separate assistant. Availability depends on device, operating system, language, and region.
Using built-in features in notifications, Siri, and Photos
Apple Intelligence is a natural starting point for notification summaries, routine system tasks, searching your photo library with a description, and supported photo-editing features. These capabilities are tied to Apple’s system experiences; check Apple’s current feature and compatibility information for the device you use.

Using ChatGPT without switching apps
Apple’s integration can make ChatGPT available through selected Siri requests, visual intelligence, and Writing Tools Compose. Siri may offer ChatGPT when it is useful, and the system can ask before sending a request or selected attachments. For example, Apple’s guide suggests asking Siri to have ChatGPT compose a haiku. This is an access route to ChatGPT, not a reason to assume every Siri request uses it.
When ChatGPT is the better fit
Continuing a general-purpose conversation
Open ChatGPT when you expect to ask follow-up questions, develop an idea over several turns, or want a standalone assistant rather than help embedded in an Apple app. Linking your ChatGPT account can make interactions available in chat history, subject to your OpenAI account settings. Basic Apple integration does not require account linking.
Voice conversations and image creation
The ChatGPT app is a useful starting point for real-time voice conversation and image generation or transformation, which its official App Store listing describes. Capabilities and plan limits can change, so check the live listing and OpenAI plan details for current access.

How availability affects the choice
Apple Intelligence requires eligible hardware as well as supported software, language, and region. Apple’s current support page lists iPhone 16 models or later and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max among eligible iPhones; iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPads with M1 or later, and Macs with M1 or later are also listed, alongside other newer devices. These are examples from a changing compatibility list, not a guarantee for every configuration. Verify the exact model and current requirements before buying or relying on a feature.
Apple lists supported Apple Intelligence features in English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Feature availability can differ by language and region. Apple also says Apple Intelligence does not currently work for supported devices purchased in mainland China, or for some devices purchased elsewhere when used in mainland China with an Apple Account set to China mainland.
Some server-side features—including Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground, and certain Shortcuts models—have daily limits that may vary. Apple says expanded access may be offered for a fee in the future; it does not establish a fixed quota in the cited support information.
Apple’s September 2026 announcement says its new Siri AI is rolling out in beta in English in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish planned for the following month. The announcement says Siri AI will initially be unavailable in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. These rollout details can change; check Apple’s live compatibility and availability information.

What happens to your data when you use ChatGPT through Apple
Using Apple’s ChatGPT integration sends your request and any attachments you select to ChatGPT. Apple’s guide says OpenAI receives that content plus limited request context, not information tied to your Apple Account. Consider what is included in an image, document, or prompt before sending it.

Without a linked ChatGPT account
OpenAI says unauthenticated requests through Apple’s integration are processed to provide a response and comply with applicable law, and that it does not store those requests or use them to train its models. You can use the integration for questions, writing help, and image or document analysis without signing in.
With a linked ChatGPT account
If you connect an account, OpenAI’s data settings apply. Interactions can be saved in chat history, and OpenAI says linking can provide additional model access. Free and paid ChatGPT accounts can be connected; account linking is not mandatory for basic Apple integration. Review your account’s data controls if you want to understand how linked interactions are handled.
Which one should you use?
- Start with Apple Intelligence if your main need is writing help in Apple apps, summaries, photo search, or device-native assistance.
- Open ChatGPT if you want an extended conversation, standalone image creation, or a voice conversation.
- Use both if you want Apple’s in-context features and occasional ChatGPT capabilities through Siri, visual intelligence, or Compose. Link an account only if the added access or history is useful to you and you are comfortable with its settings.
- Check access first if a feature is missing: verify the Apple device, operating system, language, and region, or check the current ChatGPT app and plan details.
